What is LLumar Platinum PPF?
Platinum is LLumar’s family of clear urethane paint protection films, each with a self-healing, water-repelling top coat, that take chips, scuffs and stains so the paint doesn’t. It is the film in every PPF package at Brookswood Tint.
LLumar sells Platinum through dealers who install it, and its own PPF FAQ says pricing “is determined by the LLumar dealers who professionally install the products.” That’s why the price you pay depends on the shop and the coverage, not on a list price for the film.
Which films are in the Platinum family?
Three films share the Platinum name and the 10-year warranty. They differ in finish and thickness.
Platinum Gloss
The standard film here. LLumar’s Platinum Gloss page describes “a high-shine topcoat designed to maintain your car’s factory-fresh look”, a self-healing surface that LLumar says draws on engine heat or sunlight to fade light swirls and scratches, and HydroGard water repellency. On gloss paint it’s meant to disappear.
Platinum Matte
A flat, non-glossy version. LLumar pitches it two ways: to blend with an existing flat finish, or to change the look of gloss paint. Over gloss paint the result is satin, and LLumar says the film is “engineered for optical clarity” so the colour underneath stays true. The shop installs it on request.
Platinum Extra
The heavy-duty member of the family. LLumar calls it “our Thickest Paint Protection Film”, “thicker than traditional PPF”, and says your finish will keep standing out “even after track racing, gravel roads, or harsh weather.” It is offered for a full wrap or for targeted areas such as “rocker panels, fenders, hoods, bumpers, and doors”. Platinum Extra isn’t part of the shop’s published packages; if your car sees gravel or track days, ask about it when you book.
How does Platinum compare with the rest of LLumar’s PPF line?
Platinum sits in the middle of LLumar’s paint protection film line by warranty term: two years shorter than Valor, five years longer than Gloss & Matte. Every term below comes from LLumar’s own product pages.
| LLumar film | Limited warranty | What LLumar leads with | At Brookswood Tint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valor | 12 years | Tetrashield top coat; sold as PPF with a ceramic-style easy-wash finish; “up to 25% more environmental resistance” than typical PPF, compared with top brands | Not in the packages |
| Platinum Gloss | 10 years | Self-healing, HydroGard, high-shine top coat | Every package |
| Platinum Matte | 10 years | Flat finish, HydroGard, self-healing | On request |
| Platinum Extra | 10 years | LLumar’s thickest PPF | Ask when booking |
| Gloss & Matte | 5 years | Headlined “Affordable Protection”; self-heals with sun or engine heat | Not in the packages |
LLumar also lists Select Black, a gloss black film meant to give the look of a vinyl wrap with the protection of PPF. LLumar also cautions that not every product is sold in every region.
How does Platinum’s self-healing work?
Light scratches in Platinum’s top coat close up when the film is warmed. LLumar describes “a proprietary top coat that protects the urethane against surface scratches” and says most of those scratches heal with “a heat source, such as the sun, warm water, heated body panel (with motor running).”
In summer the sun does that work. In a Fraser Valley winter it gets less help: Abbotsford averages 276.7 hours of bright sunshine in July but only 64.9 in December (ECCC climate normals, 1981–2010). In the darker months, a drive that warms the hood or a rinse with warm water is what helps light scratches heal.
Self-healing has limits. It’s for surface scratches; a stone that cuts through the film, or a chip that was in the paint before the film went on, won’t heal.
What is HydroGard?
HydroGard is LLumar’s name for the water-repelling top coat on the Platinum films. On Platinum Gloss, LLumar says it “creates a water-repellent barrier that resists stains and enhances longevity”; on Platinum Matte it’s “a hydrophobic topcoat that repels moisture, reduces stains, and boosts durability.”
LLumar publishes no test figures for HydroGard, so treat it as a top coat that helps the film shed water and resist staining between washes, not as a reason to wash less. Bird droppings, sap and bugs still need to come off promptly.
What does the Platinum warranty cover?
All three Platinum films carry a 10-year limited warranty from LLumar. For the Platinum film installed here, the shop’s own terms name yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling. Like LLumar’s other PPF warranties, it carries a footnote that certain restrictions apply and that the dealer holds the details.
LLumar’s FAQ spells out several of those restrictions:
- Car wash lifting. Lifting caused by pressure-washing or automatic car washes is not covered.
- Repaired paint. Issues with aftermarket and repaired paint are not covered; LLumar makes the film for original factory paint.
- Carbon fibre. Carbon fibre isn’t treated as OEM paint, so it isn’t eligible for warranty coverage.
The shop’s own warranty terms are on the warranty page, and how long film lasts in practice is covered in how long PPF lasts.
Does LLumar publish Platinum’s thickness?
No. LLumar’s Platinum pages give no thickness figures, so neither does this page. The only comparison LLumar makes is relative: Platinum Extra is its thickest film and “thicker than traditional PPF.”
Mil figures you see quoted elsewhere don’t come from LLumar’s product pages. If thickness matters to you because the car runs gravel roads, ask about Platinum Extra rather than comparing numbers.
How does Brookswood Tint install Platinum?
Every piece is cut from a software template for your year, make and model, then fitted by hand with edges wrapped where the panel allows. A complex bumper may need a relief cut, and the installer points it out before the job begins. Before the film, the paint is decontaminated and corrected where needed.
Platinum Gloss comes in four packages, from $850 for a partial front up to $4,000 for full-vehicle coverage, all starting prices. Matte is available on request. What each package covers, and what moves the price, is on PPF cost in Langley; if you’re choosing between the first two, see partial vs full front PPF. Then send your vehicle details and preferred finish through the quote form.
