How does metallized window film work?
A metal layer in the film bounces part of the sun’s energy back out before it reaches the cabin. LLumar describes its ATR film as “a combination of metallized and dyed tint technology” whose metallic layer “helps reflect away the sun’s heat and glare”, and says it has “a slightly reflective look”.
The reflection pays off in heat figures. LLumar’s performance data sheet sets ATR beside its dyed and ceramic lines at matching darkness:
| LLumar film | VLT | TSER | IRER | Visible reflection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ATR 05, metallized | 5% | 61% | 54% | 6% |
| ATR 35, metallized | 37% | 44% | 40% | 8% |
| ATC 35, dyed | 38% | 35% | 22% | 6% |
| IRX 35, nano-ceramic | 39% | 54% | 60% | 6% |
ATR beats dyed film comfortably and runs close to ceramic in its darkest shade, then falls further behind IRX as the shades get lighter.
Why can metallized film affect radio signals?
Because metal can get in the way of radio reception, and many cars build antennas into the glass. Polestar’s Polestar 2 owner’s manual warns owners off tinted film with a metallised coating on the back window, because the radio antenna is built into that glass.
LLumar’s own sheet sells its CTX ceramic line on keeping heat out while leaving electronic signals alone. Phones, GPS and keyless entry are covered in whether tint blocks cell or GPS signal, and back glass with heater and antenna lines in tinting over rear defroster lines.
Is metallized film legal in BC?
On the side windows behind the driver, nothing in the inspection rules turns it away. BC’s 2025 Vehicle Inspection Manual turns away tint of the “reflective type” at three items: on the windshield strip (item 12e), on any pane ahead of the driver’s seat back, where no film is allowed anyway (item 13d), and on the rear window (item 14c). Whether a particular metallized film counts as reflective is the inspector’s call, so a back window is the riskiest place for one. The side-by-side rules are in reflective and coloured tints in BC.
What to choose instead
Nano-ceramic film gets close to the same heat numbers with no metal: IRX 05 rejects 62% of total solar energy against ATR 05’s 61%, and reflects 5%. Brookswood Tint quotes IRX as an upgrade on its dyed rear packages, and tinting electric vehicles walks through the same choice for EVs.
