Can you smoke the taillights on a Ford F-150?
Yes. STEK smoke comes in 50%, a gentle darkening, and 30%, close to black, and each piece is warmed and stretched over the curve of the F-150’s taillamp lens. Allow two to three hours for each pair, and the job is quoted per truck because the lamps fitted differ by trim.
On the shop’s published terms, STEK stands behind the film for 7 years. Headlamps can be done in smoke, yellow or clear by the same method. Because a filmed lamp can fail in BC, the shop raises that before cutting anything. For the general service, see smoked taillights.
Which lamps does your F-150 have?
It depends on the trim. Ford Canada lists these for 2026:
| 2026 trim | Headlamps | Taillamps |
|---|---|---|
| XL | LED reflector | Halogen |
| STX | LED reflector | Halogen |
| XLT | LED reflector, automatic high beams | Halogen |
| Tremor | LED reflector | Halogen (LED optional) |
| Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum | LED projector with Dynamic Bending | LED |
| Raptor | LED reflector (projector optional), black surrounds | LED, black surrounds |
The Dynamic Bending headlamps on the upper trims swivel up to 15 degrees to light the road through curves, according to Ford. The Raptor’s lamps already come with black surrounds, a darker look that puts nothing over the lens. Ford’s XL page also lists a cargo lamp built into the centre high-mounted stop lamp; that lamp is a brake light, so film on it falls under the same inspection rules as the taillamps.
Check that the lamps work properly before film goes on, since film won’t fix a fault. Transport Canada recall 2022-520 covered 2022 F-150s whose LED parking lamps could flicker, fixed by reprogramming the LED driver module at a dealer. Look up your VIN if you’re unsure.
Will tinted lights pass a BC inspection on an F-150?
They can fail. In section 6 of the province’s 2025 inspection manual, item 1.0(a) lists two lens conditions as rejects: one that “reduces transmission of light” and one that “is covered in any manner”. Smoke film does both, at 50% as well as at 30%, and yellow film on headlights changes the colour of the beam. Even clear film may be questioned by an inspector.
That matters if the truck is pulled over and given a Notice & Order, if it’s coming from out of province, or if it’s being sold. The film comes off with heat, so it can be stripped before an inspection. The tail, brake and signal lamp rules are gone through in the smoked taillight legality answer; headlamps have their own answer in BC’s rules on tinted headlights.
Is smoke film on halogen or LED taillamps any different?
The fitting is the same: the film is heat-formed to the lens, whatever is behind it. What changes is the look, because halogen taillamps on the XL, STX and XLT and LED ones from the Lariat up don’t look alike when lit. Ask to see a sample shade against your own taillight before choosing between 50% and 30%.
Planning a blackout of the bright trim too? The F-150 chrome delete fits into the same appointment.
How do you book F-150 light film in Langley?
Send the year and trim, say whether you want the taillights, headlights or both, and choose 50% or 30% smoke, yellow or clear. The shop confirms the price for your lamps, explains the inspection risk and books a slot of two to three hours a pair. Use the light film quote form.
