What does partial front PPF cover for $850?

The $850 starting price puts LLumar Platinum film on five areas at the nose of the car: the whole front bumper, the forward part of the hood, the forward part of each front fender, both headlights and both side mirrors. It’s the smallest of the shop’s four PPF packages and the least expensive way to get film on the paint that faces the road.

Area Coverage How the film finishes
Front bumper Whole panel Wrapped around the bumper’s edges where its shape allows
Hood Leading section An edge across the open paint, partway back
Front fenders Leading section, both sides An edge across the open paint, partway back
Headlights Both Included in the package
Side mirrors Both housings Included in the package

Every piece is cut by software from a template made for your car’s year, make and model. $850 is where the price starts, not a flat fee: a full-size pickup’s bumper takes more film and more time than a compact hatchback’s, and a bumper with deep vents or paint that needs work first will raise the number. Prices are before tax.

Who should choose partial front PPF?

Partial front makes sense if you want the bumper and the leading edge of the car protected for the lowest price, and most of your driving is around town rather than long daily runs at highway speed. It’s also a sensible first step on a new car when the budget is already stretched.

Drivers around Langley, Surrey and Cloverdale

In winter the City of Langley brines its priority routes and, during snow events, uses salt or a mix of salt and sand, with the sand mix going on steep locations. The car ahead throws that grit back at you, and the front bumper is the first painted surface in its way. That’s the panel this package covers completely.

New cars on a tight budget

If the paint is new and clean, partial front gets film onto the forward-facing paint before the first winter, for $700 less than a full front. You can read the wider question in whether PPF stops rock chips.

When to look at a bigger package

If you commute on Highway 1 every day, want no film line on the hood, or want a matte finish, look past partial front. The full front PPF package covers the whole hood and both full fenders, so a stone that lands further back still hits film.

Where does the film stop on a partial hood and fenders?

On a partial front, the hood and fender film ends partway back on the open paint, so there is an edge across each of those panels. That edge can’t be wrapped the way the bumper edges are, because there’s no panel edge at that point to fold the film around.

LLumar says its Platinum Gloss film is made to blend with the paint when it’s applied partially. Blending is the aim, but the edge is still there, and it’s the line to keep pressure-washer nozzles away from. Ask where the line falls on your model when you book.

Here is what the package leaves uncovered, and which package adds it:

Not covered by Partial Front Package that adds it
Rest of the hood and front fenders Full Front, from $1,550
A-pillars, front of the roof, rocker panels Track Package, from $1,900
Doors, rear quarters, trunk or tailgate, rear bumper Full Vehicle, from $4,000

Gloss or matte: LLumar Platinum comes in both, but matte film turns gloss paint satin. On a partial front that means a satin nose, a gloss tail and a change of finish partway across the hood, so gloss is the finish that keeps a partial front looking like the rest of the car.

How does a partial front PPF appointment work?

A partial front is usually done in one day. You drop the car off during opening hours (9:00 to 17:00, Monday through Saturday), and the film goes on after the paint has been cleaned and checked.

Paint prep

Every panel that gets film is decontaminated first, so road grime and fallout aren’t sealed underneath. If the bumper or hood already has swirls or light defects, a single-stage enhancement polish, roughly a day of work, can be done first; see paint correction for what each stage involves. That adds time to the visit.

Cutting the pieces

The bumper, hood, fender, headlight and mirror pieces are cut from software templates made for your exact vehicle, so they match its panels before they ever touch the paint.

Fitting the bumper

Bumper edges are wrapped wherever the shape allows. A few bumper designs force a small relief cut in the film; if yours is one, the spot is pointed out to you before the install begins.

How do you look after partial front film?

Give the film a week before its first wash, then wash by hand or in a touchless bay. Skip brush washes, and keep pressure-washer nozzles off the film edges, which on this package includes the line across the hood and fenders.

LLumar Platinum has a self-healing topcoat, and LLumar says engine heat or sunlight is enough to fade swirl marks and minor scratches in it. If you want film and paint to shed water alike, a ceramic coating can be applied across both.

LLumar backs Platinum with a 10-year manufacturer’s limited warranty, and the shop lists yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling as covered. Keep the invoice with the car’s papers.

How much more does full front PPF cost than partial front?

At starting prices the step up is $700: Full Front starts at $1,550 plus tax, against $850 for Partial Front. The $700 buys film over the rest of the hood and the rest of both fenders, so those panels finish at their own edges instead of a line across the paint.

One step further, the Track Package is another $350 on top of Full Front and adds the A-pillars, the front of the roof and the rocker panels. The $700 figure applies when you choose at booking; adding coverage to a car that already wears partial film is quoted on the car. The trade-off between the two front packages is laid out in partial vs full front PPF, and all four package prices are on the PPF cost page.

Questions about partial front PPF

01Does partial front PPF include the headlights and mirrors?

Yes. Both headlights and both side mirror housings are part of the $850 starting price, together with the full front bumper and the leading section of the hood and fenders.

02Can I get partial front PPF in matte?

LLumar Platinum comes in a matte version, but matte film turns gloss paint satin. On a partial front the covered nose would stop matching the rest of the car partway across the hood, so matte suits full panels or a full body better.

03Is the $850 partial front price before tax?

Yes, $850 is a pre-tax starting price. A bigger vehicle, a bumper with lots of vents and curves, or paint that needs polishing first will bring the quote above it.

04Does partial front PPF protect the rocker panels?

No. Rocker panels, A-pillars and the front of the roof come with the Track Package, which starts at $1,900 plus tax and also includes the full hood and fenders.
