Tint removal: failed adhesive

Bubbling Window Tint Removal in Langley

At a glance

Bubbles in old tint mean the adhesive has failed and air or moisture has got between the film and the glass. Failed glue doesn't re-stick, so the fix is removal: we steam the film off, dissolve what's left of the adhesive and protect the rear defroster grid, usually in 1 to 3 hours. Small water pockets in tint less than a week old are different; they're normal and dry out on their own.

Cause
Adhesive failure, with air or moisture trapped behind the film
New tint, first week
Small water pockets are normal
Can it be saved?
The glass and grid, not the film
Removal time
1 to 3 hours
Price
Per window, discounted with a re-tint

What makes window tint bubble?

The adhesive stops holding. When the glue on old or low-grade film lets go of the glass, air or moisture moves into the gap and lifts the film into pockets that won’t press back down.

Two things set bubbling apart from other tint failures:

  • It’s a bond problem, not a colour problem. The film itself may still be the right shade; it simply isn’t attached any more. Film that has also faded is covered on purple tint removal.
  • It doesn’t dry out. Water pockets in fresh tint shrink as the moisture leaves; bubbles behind failed glue stay where they are.

LLumar’s own tint FAQ treats bubbling as a failure, answering the question of tint that begins to “crack, bubble or yellow in the sun” by saying its film “is manufactured to maintain its color and integrity, year after year.”

Is it water from a new install or failed film?

Check the age of the tint first. Haze and small water pockets in the first week after an install are normal and evaporate; bubbles in film that has been on for years are adhesive failure.

Age of the film What you see What it is What to do
Under a week Light haze, small soft water pockets Installation solution still drying Leave it alone; keep the windows up 3 to 5 days
A few weeks, still pockets Pockets that haven’t shrunk More than normal drying Call the shop that fitted it
Years old Raised bubbles, lifting edges Adhesive failure with air or moisture behind it Remove the film and re-tint

The cure-time rules for fresh tint, including when the windows can go down, are in when you can roll the windows down after tinting.

Can bubbled tint be repaired without removing it?

No. Pressing a bubble flat doesn’t restore a bond that has failed, and the pocket comes back. The film has to come off.

What survives the job is the expensive part: the glass, the defroster grid on the back window and any antenna printed on the glass. Removal is per window, so a single bubbled pane can be done on its own, though new film next to old may not match.

How we take bubbled film off

The film comes off with steam, the leftover glue is dissolved, and the rear grid is protected the whole way. The failed areas are already loose, so they lift first.

Where the bond has failed

The lifted sections peel away with little effort. The work is in the patches where the adhesive still holds, which get steam until they release.

The glue left on the glass

Peeling the film leaves adhesive on the glass, and any of it left behind would show through new film as a haze. Every trace is dissolved before anything else happens.

The back window

No blades on rear glass, ever. Steam lifts the film off the defroster lines, and the grid is tested before and after so you know it works when you drive away.

The interior is covered throughout, because steam removal is wet work.

How long bubbling tint removal takes and what it costs

Plan on 1 to 3 hours for removal. One or two windows is quick; a whole car of old film with stubborn glue takes the full time.

Removal is quoted per window, and the price drops when new film goes on at the same appointment; on most cars both happen on one day. What to put on so it doesn’t bubble again

LLumar film, cut on a plotter to your exact year, make and model, heat-shrunk and fitted by hand, and backed by a lifetime warranty covering both the film and our workmanship. Choose between the three films for heat and look; the warranty is the same on each.

LLumar film What it is Shades the shop lists
ATC Colour-stable dyed film, the base in every starting price 5, 15, 35, 50%
IRX Infrared-rejecting nano-ceramic, quoted per package 5, 15, 35, 50%
AIR Clear ceramic for heat without the dark look, quoted per package 70, 80, 90%

For the most heat rejection, ceramic window tint explains where IRX fits, and the LLumar AIR film page covers the near-clear option. Rear-glass packages in ATC start at $240 for a sedan; the full list is on window tint pricing.

Then look after it: clean it with ammonia-free glass cleaner on a soft microfibre cloth, and keep scrapers off it.

Questions about bubbling tint removal

01Can bubbling tint fail a BC inspection?

On the back glass it can if it's bad enough. Item 14a of the 2025 Vehicle Inspection Manual rejects a rear window "clouded to such an extent that the driver is unable to see clearly 60 m to the rear."

02Do bubbles mean my tint was installed badly?

Not when they show up years later; that pattern points to adhesive giving out with age. Pockets that appear in the first days after an install are usually water still drying.

03Will the rear defroster still work after you take bubbled film off?

It should. We use steam on rear glass instead of a blade, which is what cuts grid lines, and we test the grid before we start and again when the glass is clean.

04Is it cheaper to strip only the bubbled windows?

Yes, because removal is priced per window. A single new pane next to old film can look different, so weigh that against the saving.
