Can You Ceramic Coat a Vinyl Wrap?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

Yes, a ceramic coating can go on a vinyl wrap, and Brookswood Tint suggests one for satin and matte wraps, whose flat finishes pick up stains, as long as the product is made for vinyl. The catch is the film warranty: 3M won't warrant 2080 film with a coating on it, ceramic included, and Avery Dennison voids its cover for protective coatings that contain solvents or petroleum distillates. The decision is whether easier cleaning is worth more to you than the film maker's warranty.

Will 3M or Avery Dennison warrant a coated wrap?

3M won’t, and Avery Dennison voids its cover for any coating that contains solvents or petroleum distillates. 3M’s 2080 maintenance FAQ asks whether a ceramic coating on a 2080 wrap affects the 3M MCS warranty, and its answer is “Yes.”

The 2080 product bulletin spells out why. Coatings and other aftermarket additions, “such as, but not limited, to ceramic coatings”, are excluded from the warranty and should be used only on a “user test-and-approve basis”, and “3M does NOT warrant 2080 films with coatings or other aftermarket additions.” Avery Dennison’s Supreme Wrapping Film data sheet gets to a similar place through the ingredients: soaps, waxes or protective coatings that contain petroleum distillates or solvents “void any warranty and may cause premature failure of the material.”

Why would anyone coat a wrap?

Because some finishes are hard to keep looking even. On the shop’s own wrap page the argument is about upkeep: satin and matte films stain easily, and a vinyl-specific coating evens out the sheen and lets bugs and bird droppings wipe off without scrubbing.

The film makers agree that contaminants are a real threat to vinyl. Avery’s cleaning bulletin says films in constant contact with dirt, grime and contaminants will eventually degrade, especially if they’re left unclean under UV light or heat, and it sells a sealant to make it harder for bird droppings and tree sap to damage the surface. A coating is one answer to that problem. The makers’ own products are the other.

What’s the warranty-safe way to protect a wrap?

Use what the film maker names. Each company publishes a route that protects its vinyl without taking it out of warranty, and the route depends on the finish.

3M 2080 in gloss or smooth finishes

3M’s FAQ names these products for smooth or gloss 2080: 3M Perfect-It Show Car Paste Wax, Meguiar’s Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Liquid Wax, 3M Polish Rosa and 3M Synthetic Wax Protectant. Even these are used on a test-and-approve basis, so try each on an out-of-sight area before the whole car.

3M 2080 in matte or textured finishes

Nothing glossy goes on these. 3M’s care bulletin says not to apply waxes, polishes, paint or clear coat to matte, textured or other special finishes, so their upkeep is gentle washing and nothing more.

Avery Dennison films

Avery sells Supreme Wrap Care, a water-based Cleaner, Power Cleaner and Sealant. Its bulletin says the Sealant goes on after the installation once the film has been wiped down, and treats reapplication as a requirement, as often as monthly for cars in heavy use. Avery also notes its products may leave slight streaking on matte films, and recommends a test patch first.

Does a coating affect the shop’s 5-year vinyl warranty?

It can. The 5-year term Brookswood Tint publishes is the manufacturer’s warranty on the vinyl, so the manufacturer’s exclusions come with it: coat a 3M 2080 wrap and the film is outside 3M’s cover, and a solvent-based product on Avery film voids Avery’s.

3M’s warranty card also sets out how a claim works: start with your installer, and present the card with the original invoice. If you choose a coating anyway, write down what went on and when, so any later question about the film starts from facts. How every warranty the shop offers compares is on the warranty page.

Should the paint be coated before it’s wrapped?

Tell the shop if it already is, because wrap film is meant to bond to clean factory paint. 3M’s colour change instructions have installers remove tar, tree sap, waxes and polishes from the paint during preparation, before any film touches it.

So a coating on the paint isn’t a way of protecting a future wrap, and a car that already wears one should be flagged at the quote stage so the prep can be planned. Between them, the shop’s coating packages, from one layer to four, cover paint, PPF, wheels, glass and trim; they’re described on ceramic coating.

Deciding on a coated wrap in Langley

Bring the question with your wrap quote. Tell the shop the finish you want, whether the car is already wrapped and in which film, and whether keeping the full film warranty matters more to you than easier cleaning. If it does, the makers’ own care products are the plan; if staining on a satin or matte finish worries you more, a coating designed for vinyl is the shop’s recommendation, with the warranty trade-off understood up front.

Coating work is quoted per vehicle, and the shop asks that a freshly coated car be kept out of the rain for its first day after pickup. Ask through the wrap quote form; texts about finishes are welcome at 604 534 6433. Then see the wash routine for wrapped cars, which keeps either kind of finish clean.

Related questions

01Is a spray-on ceramic product safe on a wrap?

Treat it like any coating. 3M says the owner takes full responsibility for a coating or unsubstantiated cleaning product on 2080 film, and Avery voids its warranty for products containing solvents or petroleum distillates, so read the label and test a hidden spot first.

02Will a ceramic coating stop stone chips on a wrapped car?

No. Coatings are measured in microns and aren't built to absorb impacts, whether they sit on paint or on vinyl. If chips are the worry, LLumar Platinum paint protection film on the paint at the front of the car is the product for that.

03How soon after wrapping can protection go on?

Avery's own sealant is meant to go on once the finished wrap has been wiped clean. Neither maker gives a timeline for third-party ceramic coatings, because neither warrants them, so settle the timing with the shop when you book.
