What is 3M 2080 wrap film?
2080 is 3M’s cast vinyl for changing a car’s colour, in full or in part. 3M’s product bulletin describes it as “a multi-layer cast adhesive backed film for full color vehicle wraps, accents, or partial decoration wraps”, and says it is “more conformable, easier to install” than its older wrap films, “requiring less heat during installation.”
The film is made for standard factory paint and for professional fitting. 3M’s bulletin states plainly that the products “are intended for resale for professional use only” and that installations “should be conducted by a professional installer.” It also says never to apply 2080 wet.
What does 3M publish about 2080?
3M gives figures for one reference colour, 2080-M12, and notes that other designs “vary slightly in thickness.” These are the bulletin’s numbers.
| Property | 3M’s figure |
|---|---|
| Material | Cast vinyl |
| Thickness, 2080-M12 | 3.5 mil (0.09 mm) without adhesive; 4.5 mil (0.11 mm) with it |
| Adhesive | Pressure-activated, with air release channels; grey or clear depending on colour |
| Application temperature | 18 °C to 24 °C |
| Application method | Dry only |
| Roll width | 60 in. (1.52 m) |
| Removal | With heat, chemicals or both, during the warranty period |
| Shelf life | Never more than three years from manufacture |
Controltac, Comply and the protective layer
Controltac is 3M’s name for an adhesive that touches down lightly at first, so the installer can slide the film, tack it, lift it and try again. Comply adds hidden channels that carry trapped air out to the edges. Gloss and high gloss colours ship under a clear protective layer that reduces surface marks while the film is worked and comes off before post-heating. Rolls carry direction arrows for gloss, textured, metallic, pearl and colour flip films, so each panel matches the next; 3M notes that high gloss colours don’t have arrows yet but some still show direction, so installers check before cutting.
How does 3M’s 2080 warranty work in Canada?
3M rates 2080 by zone and by panel angle, and its zone map puts Canada in Zone 2. Reading across the 2080 warranty card, film on a BC car gets 7 years on vertical surfaces such as doors and 2 on horizontal ones such as a roof.
| 3M zone | Vertical | Horizontal |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 1 | 8 years | 3 years |
| Zone 2 (Canada) | 7 years | 2 years |
| Zone 3 | 6 years | 1 year |
The card says 3M warrants applied 2080 to be “free of defects in materials and manufacture – including yellowing, bubbling or cracking.” Left out: misuse, accidents, misapplication, normal wear, dents caused by stones and road debris, and any paint that lifts when the film is removed. The cover goes only to the original buyer and can’t be transferred. 3M’s 2080 brochure adds that its warranty table doesn’t apply to Gloss Silver Chrome GC451. The shop’s own published warranty on the vinyl it fits is 5 years.
How a 3M claim starts
In Canada, 3M’s card says to “first contact your installer”, or call 3M at 1-800-328-3908 if the installer isn’t available. The card has to be presented “along with the original invoice”, and it records the product name, colour, lot or run number, VIN and installation date. The card also says the form “must be complete for warranty to be valid”, so ask for it to be filled in at pickup and keep it with your invoice.
How should a 3M 2080 wrap be cleaned?
Gently, by hand, and not for the first 72 hours. 3M’s 2080 maintenance FAQ says to wait at least 72 hours after installation before the first wash, then hand wash wherever possible.
- Cleaners: wet, non-abrasive and solvent-free, from pH 3 to 11, tested on a hidden patch before you use it everywhere. 3M says “Never scrub the film.”
- Fuel spills: wipe them off straight away, then wash and dry the area.
- Tree sap: let hot, soapy water sit on it for a few minutes to soften it, rinse, and never scrub it off.
- Fingerprints on matte films: a lint-free towel with 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water.
- Light scratches: most fade in warm sun; otherwise a professional can heat them out, keeping the film below 107 °C. Deep scratches mean new film.
- Coatings: a ceramic coating or other add-on takes 2080 outside 3M’s warranty.
Where you can, 3M would rather the car lived indoors or under a cover, out of the heat and UV. Thinking about a coating anyway? Ceramic coating a vinyl wrap sets out the trade-off first.
Can damaged 3M 2080 be patched or removed?
A single panel can be redone, but 3M warns it may not match. New film can come from a different lot, and the rest of the wrap has aged and may have faded or changed gloss, so 3M suggests replacing the whole graphic when the match matters.
On removal, 3M says 2080 comes off throughout its warranty period, as long as it wasn’t printed or overlaminated, using heat and/or chemicals; leftover adhesive cleans off. Used, applied, maintained and removed by 3M’s instructions within that period, the film “should not damage an OEM paint finish upon removal.” The shop’s side of this is on vinyl wrap removal.
Where shouldn’t 3M 2080 go on a car?
Stainless steel and powder-coated metal are off the list for 2080, and 3M asks for an adhesion test on powder-coated or water-based paint. On newer cars, the bigger point is sensors: 3M “recommends users NEVER apply film over” sensors, radar or autonomous driving equipment, and puts the job of checking compatibility on the vehicle owner or maker. So a bumper with radar behind it, or a camera housing, needs planning before any film goes near it.
Is 3M 2080 or Avery SW900 the better fit?
The colour you want usually settles it, and Brookswood Tint installs both. Avery’s film is described on Avery Dennison SW900, and the two are compared point by point on 3M 2080 vs Avery SW900.
