How do a ceramic coating, wax and sealant compare side by side?
Wax and sealant are products you apply yourself and renew often; a ceramic coating is a shop job done once over corrected paint. The figures for wax and sealant below are the makers’ own, because they’re the ones who publish them.
| Carnauba wax | Synthetic sealant | Ceramic coating (graphene-ceramic) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Natural wax in paste or liquid | Synthetic polymer, applied like a wax | Liquid polymer applied in one, two or four layers |
| How it holds on | Sits on the surface | Polymers bond more strongly than wax | Bonds to the paint, as the shop describes it |
| Time between applications | Typically 4–8 weeks (Chemical Guys) | Up to 4–6 months (Chemical Guys) | Not published in years; ask when you get a quote |
| Prep first | Wash and dry | Wash and dry | Decontamination wash, clay, machine polish |
| Who applies it | You | You | The shop, over 1 to 3 days |
| After it goes on | Follow the product label | Follow the product label | No water on it for the first 24 hours |
| Cost | A retail product | A retail product | Quoted per vehicle |
| Stops rock chips | No | No | No |
The sealant figure is in the same range on another maker’s label: Turtle Wax says its ICE Seal N Shine gives “up to six months of protection”. The wax and sealant numbers come from Chemical Guys, a company that makes and sells car waxes and sealants. We don’t quote a lifespan in years for our coating. Its beading depends on which package you choose, how well the paint was prepared and how the car is washed afterwards, and the quote is where we talk that through.
Why do wax and sealants wear off so quickly?
They’re thin layers you add on top of the clear coat, and weather and washing wear them away a little every week. One maker says as much: in Chemical Guys’ words, “UV rays, rain, and snow accelerate wax breakdown”, harsh soaps “strip wax faster”, and parking outside shortens wax life.
That list reads like a Fraser Valley forecast. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s normals for Abbotsford, a short drive east of Langley, count 179.5 days a year with measurable precipitation, about one day in two. On that average, a carnauba coat rated for four to eight weeks meets somewhere around 14 to 28 wet days before it’s due again. Winter adds salt to the spray: during snow the City of Langley puts salt, or salt mixed with sand, on its roads, and that’s more washing, which wears wax faster still. A car parked outside here sits at the short end of the label’s range more often than a garaged one.
What makes a ceramic coating different from a sealant?
Two things: how it attaches and what happens before it goes on. The shop calls its graphene-ceramic coating a “next-generation liquid polymer”, one that chemically bonds to the paint, and every coating package starts with paint preparation that a wax or sealant doesn’t require.
The bond
A wax or sealant stays on the paint until weather and washing take it off. The shop’s copy draws the line this way: unlike wax, the coating “becomes part of” the surface instead of resting on it. It still needs a correct wash routine, but it isn’t something you top up every few weeks.
The prep
Each package opens with the same prep: a decontamination wash, a clay bar, then machine polishing of one stage or more, so the coating goes onto clean, corrected paint. That matters because a coating seals in whatever it covers. A wax with fillers can hide light swirls for a few washes; a coating applied over swirls keeps them. The polishing side of that is explained on swirl mark removal.
The layers
The shop offers three packages:
| Package | Layers | Prep underneath | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 1 | Decontamination and at least one polishing stage | Paint |
| Performance | 2 | Two-stage correction | Paint, wheel faces, glass |
| Signature | 4 | Full correction | Paint, PPF, wheels, glass, trim |
How much upkeep does each one ask of you?
Wax asks the most and a coating the least, but none of them washes the car for you. The difference is what you do between washes.
At Chemical Guys’ figures, keeping carnauba wax on the car year-round means waxing roughly every four to eight weeks, somewhere between six and thirteen sessions a year. A sealant at four to six months means two or three. A coated car’s upkeep is the wash itself: a two-bucket hand wash or a touchless wash with pH-neutral soap, and no automatic brush washes, which mark any finish over time.
On a coated car you’re not chasing beading with a fresh coat of wax every month. That time is most of what a coating buys you. The rest is how the car behaves in the wet, covered in detail on whether ceramic coating is worth it in BC’s rain.
How do wax, sealant and a coating work with PPF and vinyl?
They follow different rules on film. Before PPF goes on, nothing should be on the paint; after it’s on, film and the remaining paint can be coated in one pass, and a wrap gets its own kind of coating.
- Before PPF: LLumar’s PPF FAQ says to keep wax and coatings off the paint until the film is on, because they can interfere with how the film adheres.
- After PPF: LLumar says proper care for its film “can include” non-abrasive waxes, and the shop’s Signature package coats PPF alongside paint, wheels, glass and trim.
- On vinyl: the shop recommends a coating designed for vinyl on satin and matte wraps, which stain easily.
If film is in your plans, do it before you coat. The two are weighed against each other in PPF vs ceramic coating.
Ceramic coating, wax or sealant: which should you choose?
Choose wax if you enjoy the ritual, a sealant if you want protection a few times a year from a bottle, and a coating if you’d rather wash than wax and the car spends its life outside in the rain.
Wax suits you if
- Waxing on a Sunday is part of why you own the car.
- The car is garaged and driven in good weather.
- You want the lowest cost per application.
A sealant suits you if
- You want longer gaps than wax and still want to do it yourself.
- Two or three sessions a year fit your schedule.
- The paint is in decent shape and you’re not planning a correction.
A coating rather than wax suits you if
- It spends the wet months parked outdoors, not in a garage.
- The paint is new, or you’re about to have it corrected anyway.
- You’re putting PPF on the front and want the whole car to behave alike.
- You’d rather spend the time driving than waxing.
Where Brookswood Tint stands on coating versus wax
We apply coatings and don’t sell a waxing service, so weigh our view with that in mind. If you like waxing and the car sleeps in a garage, keep doing it; it works. If the car lives outside, and you’re tired of watching the beading fade by the next rainy month, a coating is the one that changes your weekends. And if rock chips are your real complaint, none of these three is the answer; film is.
Getting a coating quote in Langley
Send the car’s year, make, model and the state of its paint through the coating quote form. Plan on one to three days in the shop, mostly preparation and correction, and plan on a dry first day after you collect the car. The three packages are described on ceramic coating, and the polishing that comes first on paint correction.
