How Do You Wash a Car With PPF?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

By hand, gently, and away from the edges. Wait a week after the install, then wash it in the shade with a neutral car shampoo and a soft wash mitt, rinse generously, and dry with clean microfibre before water spots form. Keep any pressure nozzle well back from the film's edges, and skip brush washes, abrasive pads and harsh cleaners for the life of the film.

What do you need to wash a car with PPF?

Not much, and nothing aggressive. LLumar’s PPF FAQ names hand washing as the preferred method, using a soft, clean cloth with soap and water. The kit below builds on that with the makers’ own cautions.

Use Why Source
A neutral car shampoo Strong alkaline, acidic or alcoholic cleaners can permanently damage film 3M
Soft wash mitts and microfibre towels Abrasive pads and brushes scratch the top coat 3M, LLumar
Lukewarm or cold water Hot water and strong soap are on Kia’s list of things to avoid on a car’s finish Kia owner’s manual
A hose with a shut-off nozzle Required on every hose in the City of Langley at every water restriction stage City of Langley bylaw
A shady spot 3M says to wash in a shaded or protected area 3M

What to leave in the garage: stiff brushes, scouring pads, polishing compounds and any cleaner that promises to cut through grime chemically.

How do you hand wash PPF, step by step?

Cool panels, rinse first, wash top down, rinse well, dry fast. Each step has a reason behind it.

1. Start with a cool car in the shade

Kia’s finish maintenance page says not to wash “in direct sunlight or when the body of the vehicle is warm,” and 3M’s guide asks for a shaded or protected spot. Soap dries too fast on a hot panel.

2. Rinse off the loose grit

Flood each panel with water before anything touches it. Grit that gets dragged by a mitt is what leaves wash marks, on film or paint.

3. Wash from the top down

Work roof, glass, hood and upper doors first and the lower panels last, where road grime is heaviest. Rinse the mitt often. Use straight, light passes; there’s no need to press.

4. Deal with stubborn spots by soaking, not scrubbing

Bugs, droppings and sap come off a soaked surface. The method for each is on does PPF protect against bird droppings and tree sap.

5. Rinse thoroughly

Kia’s manual says not to let soap dry on the finish. Rinse each section before moving on if the day is warm.

6. Dry straight away

3M recommends drying quickly after cleaning to help prevent hard water spots. Use a clean, soft microfibre and blot or glide; never wipe a dusty or gritty surface dry, which Kia warns will scratch the finish.

Can you use a pressure washer on PPF?

Carefully, if at all. LLumar discourages pressure washing, which it says lifts film, mostly at the edges, and it excludes that lifting from its limited warranty. Brookswood Tint’s rule is to keep any nozzle off the film edges.

If you do use one, 3M’s installation guidelines set out the limits for its own film, and they make a reasonable outer limit for any film:

3M’s pressure washer rule Setting
Nozzle At least a 40-degree wide spray pattern, with a tip guard
Pressure 80 bar maximum, about 1,160 psi
Water temperature 60 °C or less if heated
Distance At least 30 cm, held at 90 degrees to the film
Angle to an edge Never between 0 and 60 degrees

3M explains why: excessive pressure can force water under the film and weaken its adhesion, “causing the film to lift or curl.” After washing, it advises checking all the film carefully for lifted edges.

What products are safe on PPF after the wash?

Non-abrasive ones. LLumar’s idea of proper care allows wax as long as it isn’t abrasive, and 3M warns against any wax containing dyes, abrasive polishes or rubbing compounds, which it says will damage the film surface.

  • Gloss film: SunTek, LLumar’s sister brand, suggests a non-abrasive car wax once or twice a year.
  • Matte film: SunTek notes that ordinary wax can add shine to matte film, so use products made for matte finishes. Matte cars get their own page: PPF on matte paint.
  • Edges: if wax collects in the line where film meets paint, 3M’s advice is to wipe it out with a lint-free cloth.
  • Coatings: if a ceramic coating has been applied over the film, follow the coating’s care rules as well.

How does winter change the routine?

You wash more often and rinse underneath. The method on the film stays the same.

Winter adds salt to the grime. Kia’s corrosion advice is a monthly hosing of the underside, at minimum, through the winter months, then a thorough clean once the season ends; film never reaches there, so the hose has to. The salt question is covered in full on does PPF protect against road salt.

What if you can’t wash at home?

Use a touchless tunnel or a coin-op wand bay, never a brush tunnel. In a dry summer, the City of Langley’s water bylaw can bar washing cars at home under Stage 3, while some commercial washes stay open with limits. Which commercial washes suit film, and how to use a wand bay, is covered in automatic car washes and PPF.

When should you start, and where do you go from here?

Count seven days from pickup before the first wash. LLumar’s minimum is 72 hours; the shop prefers the full week. Timing gets its own page: the first wash after PPF.

For a season-by-season plan, see the PPF aftercare guide. If an edge lifts or a piece gets damaged despite careful washing, text 604 534 6433 and bring it in to the shop on the Langley Bypass. No film yet? The paint protection film range opens with a partial front in LLumar Platinum from $850, and a quote request is the first step.

Related questions

01Can I use dish soap to wash PPF?

It's better not to. 3M recommends a neutral shampoo for its film and warns off strong alkaline, acidic or alcoholic cleaners, and Kia's manual cautions against strong soap and chemical detergents on paint, so use a dedicated car shampoo.

02How often should a car with PPF be washed?

Often. LLumar's idea of proper care includes frequent hand washing, and Kia's manual suggests washing at least once a month; in a salty or pollen-heavy month, more often.

03Should I wax PPF?

You can, with a non-abrasive product. LLumar counts wax that isn't abrasive as part of looking after its film, and SunTek suggests waxing gloss film once or twice a year.

04Do I need a special shampoo made for PPF?

No. LLumar's FAQ asks only for soap and water, and 3M's guide asks for a neutral shampoo; a gentle car shampoo does the job without a film-specific label.
