What does film do to the look of matte paint?
The finish you see becomes the film’s finish. Matte film over matte paint stays flat; gloss film over matte paint turns the covered panels shiny, whatever the paint underneath is doing.
LLumar’s Platinum Matte page pitches the film at exactly this job: it gives a car “a sleek, flat finish” and is meant to blend with “existing flat finishes” as well as to turn gloss paint flat. LLumar also describes it as built for “optical clarity” that keeps a car’s true colour, so a matte grey car stays the same grey.
| Film choice on matte paint | What you see afterwards |
|---|---|
| Matte film (Platinum Matte) | A flat finish, colour unchanged, on every covered panel |
| Gloss film (Platinum Gloss) | Shiny panels wherever film sits, flat paint everywhere else |
| No film | The factory finish, exposed to chips, rubs and stains |
Matte film is often called “stealth” PPF; the term is defined in stealth PPF, and the trade-offs on a gloss car are laid out in stealth vs gloss PPF.
Why is matte paint so hard to repair?
Because the flat look lives in the surface texture, and any rubbing or polishing smooths that texture into a shine. On gloss paint a light scratch can often be polished out; on matte paint the same fix leaves a glossy patch.
Kia spells this out in a service bulletin for the matte EV6 and Sportage from January 2022. Its diagram shows silicon dioxide in the top layer diffusing light, and its rules are blunt:
- Matte paint “must not be rubbed with cloth or abrasive material that could polish the paint.”
- Rub marks, burnish marks and shiny spots “are likely to require repainting” at a body shop trained in matte repair.
- Touch-up repair “is not recommended”, since it can lead to a replaced part or a full repaint.
- Kia’s warranty “does not cover the vehicle’s matte finish appearance.”
The case for film: a scuff that polishing could remove from gloss paint can mean a refinished panel on matte. A piece of film is the layer you can afford to replace.
Which cars come with matte paint from the factory?
Several makers offer matte paint from the factory. Two examples documented in the makers’ own service papers:
| Maker | Models and years | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| Kia | EV6 and Sportage, 2022 model year onward, on cars with matte paint | Matte, 20 to 30 gloss units at 60 degrees per Kia’s bulletin |
| Mercedes-Benz | G-Class model 463 from model year 2018 and model 465 from model year 2024, with matte paint | MAGNO matte, per a 2026 Mercedes-Benz service document |
Kia’s bulletin also tells dealers to remove the “Paint Protection Film (PPF)” when a matte car arrives and inspect the paint immediately. That film is transport protection for the trip from the factory, not something the car keeps, so a matte Kia reaches its owner without it.
A matte wrap is a different case: the flat finish there is vinyl, not paint. How a matte wrap compares with matte film is covered in matte PPF vs matte wrap.
How is matte paint prepared for film?
It’s cleaned and decontaminated, not polished. On gloss paint the shop corrects swirls before film goes on; on factory matte, that kind of correction is exactly what Kia’s bulletin warns against.
Two things to tell the shop when you book:
Any matte sealant or coating on the car
LLumar’s PPF FAQ says not to put wax or other coatings on the paint ahead of its film, since they get in the way of the adhesive bond. Kia’s bulletin recommends waxes and sealers made for matte finishes, so a well-kept matte car may well have one on it. Mention anything that has been applied.
Any panel that has been repainted
LLumar designs its film to go on factory paint, and its warranty leaves out faults in aftermarket or repaired paint. On a matte car that matters twice: Kia warns that matte repairs can mean refinishing far more than the damaged spot, and the film warranty treats a refinished panel differently from factory paint.
How do you look after matte film once it’s on?
Treat it like matte paint: gentle hand washing, no products that add shine, and quick removal of anything that stains. The difference is that a mistake now marks a replaceable film instead of the paint.
SunTek, LLumar’s sister brand under Eastman, cautions that certain waxes leave matte film glossier than it started, and points owners to waxes made for matte finishes. Kia’s matte bulletin makes the same point about paint. Platinum Matte’s HydroGard top coat, in LLumar’s words, “repels moisture, reduces stains, and boosts durability”, which helps, but it doesn’t replace prompt cleaning.
The shop’s care rules for Platinum are the same on matte: no wash for the first week, then hand or touchless only, with spray kept clear of the edges and no brush washes. The routine itself is in the PPF washing routine.
How much of a matte car should you cover?
More than you would on gloss, if the budget allows. On a gloss car, uncovered panels can at least be polished when they pick up marks; on a matte car they can’t, so every bare panel carries the repaint risk.
| Package, in Platinum Matte | Bare matte paint left behind | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Partial Front | Rear of the hood and fenders, doors, pillars, roof, rockers, rear | $850 |
| Full Front | Doors, roof, pillars, rockers, rear | $1,550 |
| Track Package | Doors, rear of the roof, rear | $1,900 |
| Full Vehicle | None; every painted panel is filmed | $4,000 |
Size, panel shape and the paint’s condition decide where your quote lands above those figures. Expect the car to stay with the shop for about a day on the partial front, up to two days on full front or track, and three to five on full body PPF.
What should you send with a matte quote request?
Your year, make and model, the factory paint name, and whether any panel has been refinished. Say you want matte film, since Brookswood Tint fits Platinum Matte on request rather than as the default.
If you’re weighing matte film for a gloss car instead, the matte PPF service explains that look; if a coating is also on your list, ceramic coating on matte paint covers what can and can’t go on a flat finish. When you’re ready, request a PPF quote or text 604 534 6433.
