How Long Does It Take to Wrap a Car?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

At Brookswood Tint, a full colour change wrap takes 3 to 5 days in the shop, and a single panel or accent job, such as a roof, hood or mirrors, takes from the same day to 2 days. That time covers cleaning and checking the paint, taking parts off so the film can wrap their edges, laying the film and finishing every edge and seam. Door jambs, complicated bumpers and specialty films all add to it.

How long does each kind of wrap job take?

Three to five days for a whole car and up to two days for a single panel, on the shop’s published timings. The size of the job sets the range, and the car itself decides where in it yours falls.

Wrap job Time in the shop What it covers
Full colour change 3 to 5 days All painted outside panels, plus jambs if you ask
Partial wrap or accents Same day to 2 days Roof, hood, mirrors, spoiler or a full stripe kit
Commercial and livery Quoted per design Logos, lettering and printed graphics for work vehicles and fleets
Chrome delete Ask when you book Window trim, grille, badges, mirror caps, roof rails

The single panel the shop is asked for most is a satin black roof on a gloss car, and the job is described on roof wraps. A whole-car change is laid out on colour change wraps.

Where do the days go in a full colour change?

Into a run of steps that each have to be right before the next one starts. Laying film on the face of a door is the visible part; making it disappear around edges, handles and seams is the careful part.

Checking and cleaning the paint

The paint is inspected first, because resprayed or flaking panels change the job. 3M asks installers to complete a pre-installation inspection record before applying film to a car, and Avery Dennison’s SW900 data sheet requires every surface to be cleaned to its own preparation standard before film goes on.

Taking parts off

Where it can, the shop takes parts off rather than cutting around them, so the film wraps the whole piece instead of stopping at a visible edge; on a chrome delete that means badges, handles and mirror caps. How many parts need removing varies from model to model, and it’s one reason wraps are quoted per vehicle.

Laying the film

3M recommends using film from a single lot for an entire vehicle so the colour matches, and installing metallic, pearl, textured and colour-flip films in one consistent direction. Its 60-inch rolls let almost any section of the car be covered without a seam (3M 2080 bulletin).

Edges and post-heating

Stretched areas and edges get the most attention. 3M recommends its Primer 94 where the film is stretched, particularly at the edges, and its gloss films carry a protective layer that has to come off before post-heating. Then the removed parts go back on and the car is checked over.

What makes a wrap take longer?

Anything that adds pieces, stiffness or planning: door jambs, complicated bumpers and grilles, a bigger vehicle, a specialty film, or paint that needs fixing before the wrap can start.

  • Door jambs. They’re available on a colour change, and they’re extra surfaces on top of the exterior panels.
  • Thicker films. Avery says films with a face of 4 mil or more “may have reduced conformability”; its White Pearl is 4.2 mil and its Diamond Line 5.4 to 5.7 mil.
  • Textured and directional films. 3M notes that the thickness and texture of some 2080 films make them harder to cut cleanly, and both makers want directional films kept in one orientation.
  • Sensors and cameras. 3M’s bulletin says film should never cover sensors, radar or self-driving hardware, so it’s worked around them.
  • Chips and repairs. Damaged paint has to be sorted out before any film goes on, as covered in wrapping a car with rock chips.

Why can’t a wrap be rushed in a cold garage?

Because the film has to go on within its temperature range. For 2080, 3M specifies application between 18 and 24 °C, dry method only; Avery sets minimums of 10 °C on flat panels and simple curves and 16 °C on complex curves.

Around Langley, outdoor air rarely sits in that range for long. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 1981–2010 normals for Abbotsford put the mean daily temperature above 16 °C in only two months of the year, July at 18.1 °C and August at 18.2 °C. Working in an indoor bay takes the weather out of the timeline, and the shop’s published timings don’t change with the season. The winter side of it is covered in wrapping a car in winter.

What happens in the first week after a wrap is finished?

The adhesive keeps building its grip. Avery’s data sheet lists SW900 adhesion at 2.1 lb/in after 15 minutes, 2.5 lb/in after 24 hours and 3.0 lb/in after a week, so the bond is still strengthening for days after you drive away.

That’s the reason for a gentle first week. The shop’s care advice for its vinyl trim work is a touchless wash after a week, no brush washes, and never a pressure-washer nozzle aimed at a vinyl edge. The full routine is in how to wash a wrapped car.

How do you book a wrap and plan the time without your car?

Ask for a quote first, since the timing comes with it. The vinyl wrap quote form is the quickest route, though texting 604 534 6433 is fine as well. Include the year, make and model, the colour or film you want, and whether you’d like door jambs.

A full colour change keeps the car for three to five days; a roof or accents, from the same day to two. Drop it off at the shop, Unit 312 of 20560 Langley Bypass, Monday to Saturday, 9:00 until 17:00. What moves the price is covered on vinyl wrap cost.

Related questions

01Can I wait at the shop while a single panel is wrapped?

Some single-panel jobs are finished the same day and others run to two, so plan on dropping the car off. Ask when you book which yours is likely to be.

02Do door jambs add time to a wrap?

Yes. Jambs are extra surfaces on top of a full colour change, so ask for them when you request the quote and the timing will include them.

03Does a printed commercial wrap take longer than a colour change?

It has extra steps before installation, because the graphics are designed and printed to your brand file first. That's why commercial and livery work is quoted per design.
