Is Window Tint Worth It in BC?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

For most drivers, yes, as long as you're buying it for the glass behind you. BC permits film only behind the driver and in a narrow 75 mm windshield strip, and on that glass a LLumar rear package from $220 to $260 buys privacy, more than 99% UV blocking, less glare and some heat control, with a lifetime warranty. It isn't worth it if what you really want is a dark front window.

From $240, 5 windows

What do you actually get from tint in BC?

Five things, all on the glass behind the driver: privacy, UV protection, less glare, less solar heat and a finished look. Whether that’s worth $220 to $260 depends on which of the five you care about.

What you want Does tint deliver it in BC? The number behind it
Privacy for passengers and cargo Yes, at any shade you like behind the driver 5% film lets through 5% of daylight
UV protection in the back seat Yes, with any LLumar film More than 99% blocked, 300–380 nm
Less glare from the side and behind Yes, scaled to the shade 57% glare reduction for ATC 35
A cooler cabin Partly; ceramic does more TSER 28–44% for ATC, 50–62% for IRX
Darker front windows No, not legally Film there can bring a $109 ticket

The figures come from LLumar’s spec sheet, which tests each film on one pane of clear glass. TSER is total solar energy rejected, the sheet’s main heat figure.

What does BC’s tint law take off the table?

The windshield and the front side windows. Film is restricted by MVAR s. 7.05(8) to the side glass behind the driver’s seat, the back window where both outside mirrors are in place, and a 75 mm strip along the top of the windshield. On that glass, no darkness limit applies.

Front film isn’t worth it on cost alone. The shop will still fit it for a customer who insists, after explaining that no film on those windows is road-legal in BC, not even clear film, and what can follow:

What can follow front-window film Cost or consequence Source
Violation ticket $109; $84 when paid inside 30 days Fines regulation, Mission RCMP
Notice & Order Remove the film and pass an inspection Mission RCMP
Inspection Generally $150 to $250 Mission RCMP
Missing the 30-day inspection $598 fine Mission RCMP

Add the $140 or $160 for the film itself and a removal later, and front tint costs far more than it looks. The rule is set out on tinting front windows in BC.

Does the Fraser Valley climate make tint worth it?

For UV, yes, all year; for heat, mostly in summer. Abbotsford Airport, east of Langley, logs 1,886.7 sunshine hours annually and 8.7 days over 30 °C, and its July mean high of 24.0 °C beats Vancouver Airport’s 22.2 °C, per ECCC’s 1981–2010 climate normals.

UV doesn’t take the winter off. The Skin Cancer Foundation says UVA passes through windows and clouds year-round, and that the tempered glass of side and back windows doesn’t block it effectively. With Abbotsford recording precipitation on 179.5 days a year, that’s the benefit that keeps working on grey days. Heat rejection matters on the 8.7 hot days and the many warm ones around them, especially in a car that’s parked outside.

What does tint cost, and how long does it last?

A rear package is a one-time cost from $220 to $260 in dyed LLumar ATC, with ceramic IRX and clear AIR quoted per package. The film carries a lifetime warranty, and most cars are done in a single visit.

Rear package Windows From
Sports coupe Two quarter windows, back glass $220
Sedan or pickup truck Both rear doors, any quarter glass, and the back window or truck slider $240
Full-size SUV or wagon Both rear doors, the quarters, any extended windows and the hatch glass $260

LLumar’s warranty FAQ covers its tint with a lifetime limited warranty from the manufacturer, and Brookswood Tint backs its labour for life as well. Expect 2 to 4 hours in the shop for a full sedan or SUV tint, after which the tinted windows stay up for between 3 and 5 days. Spread over the years you keep the car, the cost per year is small; the bigger risk is buying film that has to come off early.

When is tint not worth it?

When the reason you want it is something BC’s law or your car already takes care of. Four cases come up:

  • You want the front windows dark. That’s the one thing tint can’t legally give you here.
  • Your SUV already has dark privacy glass and you only want privacy. The glass is already doing that; film adds UV and heat control, which may or may not matter to you.
  • You reverse in the dark a lot and want 5% on the back glass. Choose a lighter back window instead, or accept a darker view in the mirror at night.
  • You’re about to sell. Legal rear film can stay, but it’s money spent for the next owner; does tint lower resale value looks at that.

Dyed or ceramic: which is worth it?

Dyed ATC is worth it for privacy and UV at the starting price. Ceramic IRX is worth the upgrade if heat is a big part of why you’re tinting: it rejects 59–61% of infrared energy against 22% for ATC.

The full case is on is ceramic window tint worth it. If the time of year matters to your decision, when to tint in BC covers curing in wet and cold months.

Deciding and booking

Pick your reason, then your shade: 35% if you want it to look tinted, 15% to keep eyes out, 5% for the blacked-out look, or AIR if the glass should look untouched. Then choose ATC or IRX.

Each package is broken down under tinting just the back windows, and the price list puts them side by side. For a quote, send the car’s details by text to 604 534 6433 or use the online form.

Related questions

01Is tint worth it if my car lives in a garage?

Usually still, for privacy and UV on the road, but you'll get less from the heat side. Dyed ATC at the starting price covers the shade and the UV; ceramic is worth more to cars that sit outside.

02Is cheap tint worth it compared with a $240 rear package?

Prices vary with the film, how it's cut and what the warranty covers. Dyed film that turns purple or bubbles has to be removed, and removal is priced per window, so compare the whole job, not the first number.

03Will tint make my car harder to sell in BC?

Legal film behind the driver can stay on when the car is sold. Front-window film is a different matter: BC's Motor Vehicle Act bars the sale of a vehicle that breaks its regulations.

04Is tint worth it with BC's grey, rainy winters?

The UV and privacy work all year, but dark film behind you also makes the back glass harder to see through on long December evenings. If you back up after dark a lot, go lighter on the rear window.
