What Is a Clear Bra?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

A clear bra is clear paint protection film applied to a car's nose: a urethane film bonded to the bumper, hood, fenders, headlights and mirrors so stone chips land on the film instead of the paint. The word clear sets it apart from the fitted vinyl covers still sold as car bras. At Brookswood Tint a clear bra means LLumar Platinum in a Partial Front package from $850 or a Full Front from $1,550.

What does “clear bra” mean?

It’s shorthand for a sheet of clear film protecting a car’s front-end paint. The film is the same product shops call PPF; “clear bra” just describes where it goes.

LLumar and 3M don’t lead with the nickname; both call the product paint protection film, and LLumar’s own shorthand is PPF. When someone does say clear bra, they nearly always mean film on the nose of the car: the bumper and lamps, the mirrors, and some or all of the hood and fenders. What it doesn’t tell you is exactly how much of the hood and fenders, which is why any clear bra quote should list the panels.

How is a clear bra different from a vinyl car bra?

A vinyl car bra is a fitted cover you can see and take off; a clear bra is a bonded film meant to look like it isn’t there. Both are aimed at the same stones.

Vinyl bras are still sold. Covercraft’s LeBra, for example, is listed as a custom front-end cover “constructed from leather grain vinyl” that “protects from bugs & rock chips”, built in more than one piece to fit the hood (product listing).

Vinyl car bra Clear bra (PPF)
What you see A vinyl cover over the nose The car’s own paint, under clear film
Material Leather-grain vinyl, per the LeBra listing Polyurethane film with a clear top coat
How it’s held on Fitted over the hood and bumper Pressure-activated adhesive, installed wet
Who installs it The listing describes an at-home install A trained installer, cut to a template
Light scratches Not applicable Self-heal with heat in LLumar Platinum
Warranty on the product 1 year on defects, per the listing 10-year manufacturer’s limited, LLumar Platinum

The practical difference is that the film stays on and keeps the car looking like itself, while a cover changes the car’s look for as long as it’s fitted.

Where did clear bra film come from?

From aviation. 3M says its Scotchgard Pro Series paint protection film is “based on the technology 3M invented 50 years ago to protect helicopter blades during the Vietnam War” (3M press release, February 2018).

Today’s film is a layered product. 3M’s Pro Series bulletin lists five layers, from a polyester cap sheet on top to a polyester liner under the adhesive. The parts that protect the paint are a polyurethane clear coat over a polyurethane film, held on by an acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive, and 3M lists its application method as wet only. LLumar’s Platinum film works on the same principle: a self-healing top coat on urethane, built, as its Platinum Gloss page puts it, to keep “your car’s factory-fresh look”.

What does a clear bra cover at Brookswood Tint?

Two packages match the usual meaning of clear bra. They share the bumper, headlights and mirrors and differ on how much of the hood and fenders gets film.

Panel Partial Front ($850 and up) Full Front ($1,550 and up)
Bumper All of it All of it
Hood The forward section All of it
Front fenders The forward section All of each fender
Headlights Yes Yes
Side mirrors Yes Yes
Time in the shop Usually one day One to two days

The Partial Front and Full Front pages go panel by panel, and partial vs full front PPF helps you choose. Go further back and the Track Package ($1,900 and up) puts film on the windshield pillars, a band of roof and the sills under the doors, while Full Vehicle ($4,000 and up) covers the whole painted body. By then nobody calls it a bra.

Does a clear bra protect the windshield?

No. A clear bra is paint protection, and the shop doesn’t put protective film on the outside of a windshield. Glass chips are a job for a glass repair shop and, in BC, an ICBC glass claim if you carry Comprehensive coverage.

The headlight lenses are the one unpainted surface a clear bra here includes, since every package covers them, and film on a lamp has its own rules in BC. The 2025 Vehicle Inspection Manual rejects lamps whose lenses are “covered in any manner”, which means smoked lamp film can fail and even the clear film on a clear bra may be questioned. If the car is due for one, say so when you book.

Getting a clear bra in Langley

Ask for the panels, the film line and the warranty in writing, whatever the quote calls it. Here it’s LLumar Platinum, cut by software from patterns drawn for your exact model, folded around panel edges wherever the shape allows, and warranted by LLumar for 10 years.

Prep comes first, a decontamination wash plus polishing if the paint calls for it, and the first wash afterwards waits seven days. If you’re weighing the money, is PPF worth it sets out who benefits most; the do-it-yourself route is compared in DIY PPF kit vs professional PPF. Then send the car’s details and paint colour through the quote form.

Related questions

01Is a clear bra the same thing as PPF?

Yes. Clear bra is simply the nickname for front-end PPF; the product doesn't change with the name, so judge a quote by the film line and the panels it lists.

02Does a clear bra have to come off for winter?

No. Film stays on all year. LLumar's FAQ says properly cared-for film copes with winter cold, so the front end keeps its protection through the gritty months.

03Can I install a clear bra myself?

Kits exist, but LLumar sells its film through dealers who install it. The trade-offs of doing it yourself are weighed on the DIY vs professional PPF comparison.
