How far is the shop from Chilliwack, and which way do you drive?

About 51 km in a straight line from City Hall at 8550 Young Road, and it’s Highway 1 for nearly all of it. From City Hall, Yale Road and Vedder Road lead to the Highway 1 West on-ramp signed for Vancouver.

Stay on Highway 1 west past Abbotsford and leave at the 232 Street exit, signed as Highway 10 West. Highway 10 then follows 232 Street, Springbrook Road and Glover Road into Langley and joins the Langley Bypass close to Unit 312. You never need the city streets of Abbotsford or Aldergrove; the highway does the work until the last few kilometres.

At that distance, you’ll want the visit planned so the drive happens once. Tint fits a single day; most PPF packages mean leaving the car.

What roadwork is on Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Langley?

The province is widening it in phases under its Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program, which runs from 216th Street in Langley through to Chilliwack.

Phase Section Length Status on the province’s page
1 202nd Street to 216th Street 4 km Completed September 2020
2 216th Street to 264th Street 10 km Under construction
3A 264th Street to Mt. Lehman Road 13 km Under construction
3B Mt. Lehman Road to Highway 11 8 km Procurement and detailed design
4 Highway 11 through the Sumas Prairie 18 km Integrated planning

A trip from Chilliwack to the 232 Street exit runs through phase 3A and part of phase 2, so expect active construction zones on the way. The shop’s take on which film coverage a Highway 1 commuter needs is in PPF coverage for Highway 1 commuters.

Is a Chilliwack winter harder than an Abbotsford one?

Colder and snowier, though no wetter. Sardis, the Environment and Climate Change Canada station about 9 km from City Hall, has 1981–2010 normals that line up with Abbotsford Airport on rain and summer heat and part ways in winter.

1981–2010 normal Sardis Abbotsford A
Precipitation, year 1,538 mm 1,538 mm
Snowfall, year 77.8 cm 55.2 cm
Mean daily low, January –0.2 °C 0.4 °C
Days the high stays at or below 0 °C 8.3 5.8
Days above 30 °C 8.2 8.7

North-east across the Fraser, Agassiz CDA recorded 1,754 mm and 67.4 cm of snow a year. More snow means more days of plowing, sanding and brine on the roads a Chilliwack car uses before it ever reaches the highway.

How does Chilliwack handle snow and ice on its roads?

With plows, sanders and salt brine, working through four priorities. The City’s winter operations page says roads are ranked by traffic volume, emergency needs, hillside access and other safety issues, and cleared “in strict priority order” as resources allow.

Its equipment page lists snow plows and sanders, brine spray trucks, graders, backhoes and loaders. Brine goes down before a storm, often visible as stripes on the road, to stop snow and ice bonding to the pavement. Roads aren’t cleared down to bare pavement, because scraping that low would damage manhole covers and other City infrastructure.

Chilliwack also has its own tire rule for hills. Under its hillside tire bylaw, vehicles on posted hillside roads during a snow event must have winter-rated tires: at least 3.5 mm of tread and an M&S or mountain-snowflake mark. A driver stranded on one of those roads without them can face a $300 penalty. Heading the other way, the province’s winter tire rules apply on most highways beyond the Lower Mainland from October 1 until March 31 or April 30, depending on the route.

Which jobs are worth the drive from Chilliwack?

The ones that cover a lot of highway kilometres: film on the front of the car, and rear tint that handles valley heat. Prices are starting points; final PPF prices depend on size, panel complexity and paint condition.

Paint protection film

  • Full Front, from $1,550. The entire hood, fenders and bumper plus both headlights and mirrors, in 1 to 2 days.
  • Track Package, from $1,900. Full Front with film added to the A-pillars, the rockers below the doors and the front part of the roof, also 1 to 2 days. Details are on the Track Package page.
  • Partial Front, from $850. The full bumper with partial hood and fenders, usually one day.

Each package uses LLumar Platinum, a self-healing film on a 10-year LLumar limited warranty, and yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling are the defects the shop’s terms say it covers.

Window tint

In LLumar ATC, a sedan or pickup’s rear glass is from $240, and a full-size SUV or wagon’s from $260. With Sardis averaging about eight days a year over 30 °C, the IRX upgrade is worth pricing: LLumar’s spec sheet rates IRX at 50–62% total solar energy rejection against ATC’s 28–44%. The upgrades are quoted per package on the window tint page.

Questions about chilliwack

01Do I need winter tires to drive from Chilliwack to Langley?

Check the province's South Coast map: many Lower Mainland areas are exempt because winters are milder, while most highways beyond the region require winter tires from October 1. Chilliwack's own bylaw separately requires winter-rated tires on posted hillside roads during snow events.

02Can a PPF job from Chilliwack be done in one visit?

A Partial Front usually takes a day, so plan on a full day without the car. A Full Front or Track Package takes 1 to 2 days and Full Vehicle film 3 to 5, so plan for the car to stay.

03Is IRX ceramic tint worth it in Chilliwack?

It's worth pricing. The Sardis station averaged 8.2 days a year above 30 °C, much like Abbotsford, and LLumar rates IRX at 50–62% total solar energy rejection against 28–44% for the base ATC film.

04What does Chilliwack use on icy roads?

The City runs plows and sanders and sprays salt brine ahead of storms as anti-icing. It clears roads in four priorities and doesn't remove snow down to bare pavement, so it asks drivers to slow down and run proper tires.
