What Is Decontamination Wash?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

A decontamination wash is a deep clean that removes contamination stuck to the paint, such as tar, bug residue, old wax and sealant, and embedded metal fallout, which an ordinary wash glides over. Shops do it before paint is polished, coated or covered in film, so nothing gets sealed in.

Removes
Tar, bug residue, wax, sealant, metal fallout
Leaves alone
Swirls and scratches cut into the clear coat
Usual tools
Soap, chemical removers, clay with lubricant
When it's done
Before polishing, coating or PPF

What does a decontamination wash remove?

Anything bonded to the clear coat that soap and a mitt slide straight over. Carmakers and film makers each name the culprits they deal with:

Contaminant Where it comes from How it’s lifted
Rail dust and brake fallout Airborne metal from trains and brake linings (Volkswagen TSB 00-17-06) Clay, or a chemical iron remover
Bug residue Insects, including on cars parked in storage lots (GM PIT5763) Bug remover left to soak, then a rinse
Wax, tar and paint sealant Earlier products and road tar (3M PPF guidelines) Adhesive cleaner and microfibre
Tree sap, soot, iron powder Toyota’s list of deposits to wash off promptly Prompt washing, per Toyota

Toyota’s owner’s manual tells owners to wash right away after salted roads or after driving where soot, oily smoke, mine dust or iron powder hang in the air, to head off paint deterioration and corrosion.

How is a decontamination wash done?

From gentle to mechanical, so each step only has to deal with what the last one left. GM’s procedure has a bug remover sit for three minutes before a brushless or hand-held pressure rinse. Volkswagen then has technicians run a hand over the washed paint: a rough, gritty feel means bonded contamination, and that area gets clay with car shampoo as the lubricant.

Before film, 3M’s guidelines set the order out step by step: confirm there’s no ceramic coating, wipe off wax, tar and sealant with adhesive cleaner, follow with a non-ammonia glass cleaner, clay the paint, then wipe down and inspect. Dissolving metal fallout chemically is its own step, explained under iron remover.

Why does it matter on a car in BC?

Because winter roads load the paint with residue, and film or a coating would lock it in. In the City of Langley, priority routes get brine and crews lay down salt, or salt blended with sand. A clean-looking car can still feel gritty under your palm. The salt side of this is covered in protecting paint from road salt.

Where it fits in Brookswood Tint’s services

It’s the first step in two services. No ceramic coating goes on until the car has had this wash and a clay bar, followed by machine polishing, and paint protection film is only laid on decontaminated paint, with correction added when the paint calls for it.

New cars aren’t exempt. Transport can leave fallout and bug residue on fresh paint, which is why whether new cars need paint correction separates contamination from real defects. The steps for a fresh car are on new car paint prep.

Questions about decontamination wash

01Is a decontamination wash the same as a regular hand wash?

No. A hand wash lifts loose dirt. A decontamination wash adds steps aimed at what is bonded on, like bug and tar removers, an iron remover and a clay bar, and ends with the paint checked by hand.

02Can paint protection film go over an existing ceramic coating?

3M's installation guidelines say no. Their first preparation step is to make sure no coating is on the paint, and to have a correction specialist take it off if one is.

03Does a decontamination wash fix swirl marks?

No. It takes away what sits on the paint, not marks cut into it. Swirls stay until the clear coat is machine polished.
