What Is Swirl Marks?

The short answer

Swirl marks are very fine, shallow scratches in a car's clear coat that light up in circular patterns around any bright reflection, like the sun or a garage light. Most come from grit dragged across the paint while it's washed and dried, and because they stop inside the clear coat, machine polishing can level them out.

What do swirl marks look like?

Like a web of hairline arcs that circle any bright reflection on the paint. Each one is a groove too shallow to feel, but together they scatter light, so a deep, mirror-like finish turns cloudy.

They’re hardest to miss on dark colours. 3M’s Perfect-It finishing chart singles out dark-coloured cars when it describes its final, ultrafine polishing stage, a hint at where swirls show most. White and silver cars carry swirls too; they just hide them better.

Where do swirl marks come from?

From anything that drags grit across the clear coat. Washing and drying are the usual moments, and brush car washes are a known source.

Toyota’s owner’s manual tells owners to wash with a sponge or a soft cloth such as a chamois, and warns that automatic car-wash brushes may scratch the surface and harm the paint. Machines can leave them too: 3M follows its compound with a polish meant to remove “compound swirl marks”, and GM’s PIT5763 closes a paint repair by sending a DA machine over the panel to clear whatever swirls the earlier steps left. Machine-made marks have their own name, holograms. The full list of wash habits that cause swirls is in what causes swirl marks.

Why swirl marks build up on cars in BC

Winter roads coat cars in abrasive grit, and that grit is still there when the car gets washed. Road crews in the City of Langley use salt and a salt-sand mixture, and sand left on the paint is exactly what a mitt or towel drags into the clear coat. A long rinse before anything touches the paint helps, and how to prevent swirl marks sets out the rest of the routine.

How Brookswood Tint removes swirl marks

With machine polishing, matched to how deep the marks go, after the paint thickness has been measured. A one-stage enhancement polish, roughly a day’s work, handles light marks; denser webbing gets a two-stage correction, which needs one to two days.

Swirl mark removal walks through that process and its limits, and one-step paint correction covers the lighter level. Once the paint is clear, a coating or film can go on top, and how the polish itself works is under polishing.

Questions about swirl marks

01Are swirl marks the same thing as scratches?

They're a kind of scratch, just finer and in large numbers. A single deeper line is usually called a scratch; swirls are thousands of shallow ones spread across a panel.

02Why do swirl marks look worse in the sun than in a garage?

One strong light makes each fine groove flash at you from a single direction, so they show up as rings around the reflection. Soft, even light from a cloudy sky hides most of them.

03Can a brand-new car already have swirl marks?

Yes. Paint doesn't need to be old to be marked; one wash with a gritty mitt or one trip through a brush wash can do it. That's why paint is checked under good light before a coating or film goes on.
