Which STEK films suit an M4’s lamps?
The shop fits STEK light film to M4 lamps in a choice of two smoke shades (30% and 50%), a yellow and a clear. Every piece is warmed into the lens shape and edged by hand; budget two to three hours for a pair, with the price worked out per car.
| Film | Effect on an M4 | Inspection note |
|---|---|---|
| 50% smoke | A light darkening of the lens | Still reduces light, so it can fail |
| 30% smoke | A much darker, blacked-out look | Reduces light more, so it can fail |
| Yellow | Changes the colour of the light | Can fail |
| Clear | Guards the lens without changing the look | May still be questioned as a covering |
On its own pages the shop lists 7 years of STEK coverage for yellowing, cracking and peeling. For STEK’s product details, see STEK light film.
Which lamps does your M4 have?
That depends on the year, and it changes what film covers. BMW reworked both ends of the M4 for 2025.
| M4 years | Headlights | Taillights |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 to 2024 | Full LED with U-shaped fibre-optic daytime running light guides; optional Adaptive LED with BMW Laserlight, marked by blue inlays; optional Individual Shadowline lights with darkened inlays | Slim, darkened L-shaped LED units that extend into the fenders |
| 2025 on | Redesigned LED units: one module for low and high beam, plus two vertical arrowhead LEDs that serve as daytime running lights and turn signals | LED taillights with laser technology, standard on every M4 |
The earlier details are from BMW’s 2021 launch release, the later ones from the 2025 M4 announcement. Send the year with your request, because a pattern for one set of lamps won’t fit the other.
What does smoke film do to a 2025 M4’s headlights?
It dims the turn signals along with everything else. BMW says the two vertical arrowhead LED units in each 2025 headlight “function as daytime running lights as well as turn signals”, so a film over the headlight lens sits over both functions at once.
On a 2021 to 2024 car the headlight lens covers the low and high beams and the U-shaped daytime running lights. In both cases the light that reaches the road has to pass through the film first. The CS and CSL reach a distinctive front a different way: BMW lights the CSL’s daytime running lights and the CS’s headlight light icons in yellow instead of white, a nod to GT racing cars, with no film involved.
Do the laser taillights change the job?
Not the method, but they’re worth knowing about. On the 2025 M4, BMW says laser diodes light glass fibre bundles inside the units to produce three-dimensional light graphics. The technology first appeared on the limited M4 CSL, whose release describes light threads woven into the glass covers and lit by laser, with “BMW Laser” lettering on the covers.
Film goes on the outer face of the lens, so the laser parts inside are untouched, but the graphic you see is dimmed by the film’s shade. On a 2021 to 2024 M4, BMW already describes the rear lights as darkened, so a 50% smoke is a smaller visual step there than on a clear lens. Whether film makes the brake lights harder to see is covered on taillight tint and brake lights.
Will a smoked M4 pass a BC inspection?
It can fail. BC’s 2025 Vehicle Inspection Manual deals with lamps in Section 6, and its item 1.0(a) fails any lens that “reduces transmission of light” or “is covered in any manner”. On an M4, smoke film cuts the light by design, yellow alters its colour, and a clear film could still be read as a covering.
That applies to every shade on the list, 50% as much as 30%. The shop explains this before fitting anything, and the film can be lifted with heat when the car is due for an inspection. The full legal picture is on whether smoked taillights are legal in BC.
Booking light film for an M4
Send the year and version, which lamps you want done, and the shade. Say whether the car has Laserlight or Shadowline headlights if it’s a 2021 to 2024 model.
The M4 light film request takes the details, or text them to 604 534 6433. If you’re darkening other details too, M4 chrome delete and M4 window tint can be booked for the same visit.
