Are 3M’s and Avery’s matte dark greys the same colour?
No. They share a name, but the two makers put them in different families, and that changes how each one looks and how long each is rated to last.
| 3M | Avery Dennison | |
|---|---|---|
| Name and code | Matte Dark Gray, 2080-M261 | Matte Dark Grey, SW900-856-O |
| Where the maker lists it | Matte section of the 2080 brochure | Matte group of the North American overview, not the matte metallics |
| Metallic or pearl? | Flagged as metallic, chrome or pearl in 3M’s 2018 palette | Not flagged; a solid matte |
| Rating in Canada | 7 years vertical, 2 horizontal | 10 years vertical, 2 horizontal |
So if you’ve seen a matte dark grey car and want that exact look, find out which brand it was. If it showed flake in the sun, the 3M film is the likelier match of the two; if it was dead even, start with Avery’s swatch.
How flat is a matte dark grey?
Very. Avery’s SW900 data sheet keeps matte films below 15 gloss units, measured at 60 degrees, where satin sits at 20 to 30 and gloss above 85.
That’s the line between this colour and its neighbours. Satin dark grey keeps a soft sheen that traces the body lines. Matte Metallic Gunmetal is just as flat but carries metallic flake. A gloss grey, such as Nardo grey, is a different look again.
What does matte dark grey look like on a wet Fraser Valley day?
The shop’s view: rain and low cloud push a matte dark grey toward charcoal, and the car reads as one solid shape, its outline doing the talking rather than reflections. In November, when Abbotsford averages 241 mm of rain against 43 mm in July in Environment Canada’s normals, that’s how it will look much of the time.
Dry, under summer sun, the same panels lighten to a plain mid-to-dark grey, so judge the swatch on both kinds of day.
Which cars carry matte dark grey well?
Angular shapes suit it, in the shop’s view, because a flat finish relies on creases and edges to show the design. Modern performance cars, crossovers with sharp shoulder lines and full-size trucks are all good candidates.
It’s less flattering on soft, rounded bodies, which can look shapeless without reflections to define them. And if you’d like a flat look over your current colour instead of a new one, matte PPF against a matte wrap sets out the trade.
Matte dark grey care: what to use and what to avoid
There’s no polishing a matte wrap back to new, so prevention matters. 3M’s 2080 product bulletin says scratches and abrasion marks may not work out of the film’s finish, and tells owners never to scrub.
| Use | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Hand washing with a mild soap and plenty of rinse water | Wax, polish and waterless washes that contain wax |
| A 70/30 isopropyl alcohol and water wipe for fingerprints, per 3M’s maintenance FAQ | Brush car washes and scrubbing |
| Products sold for matte finishes, tested on a hidden spot first | Ceramic coatings: 3M excludes them, and Avery voids cover for solvent-based ones |
Avery’s care leaflet explains the wax rule: wax fills in a matte texture and leaves shiny spots. Its data sheet is blunter still: on matte film, those same products can shift both colour and gloss severely. 3M’s maintenance FAQ adds that matte films show fingerprints more readily.
Who stands behind a matte dark grey wrap, and for how long?
It depends on the brand. 3M’s card for 2080 film allows 7 years on doors and other upright panels, and 2 on flat surfaces such as the hood and roof, in Zone 2; the 3M zone map includes Canada in Zone 2. Avery’s solid SW900 colours carry a 10-year vertical and 2-year horizontal rating in Zone 1, the zone its Instructional Bulletin 1.30 assigns to Canada.
On its own pages, Brookswood Tint states 5 years, as a manufacturer warranty on vinyl. The makers’ numbers differ from that, so ask the shop which term your film and invoice will carry.
What’s involved in taking a matte dark grey wrap off?
Heat, patience and a residue clean-up. 3M’s maintenance FAQ says 2080 stays removable throughout its warranty period, that any adhesive left behind comes off with a citrus-based cleaner, and that factory paint shouldn’t be harmed when the film is used and removed to 3M’s instructions within that period. Paint lifting with the film isn’t covered by 3M’s card. The shop’s process is on wrap removal.
