Is Nardo Grey a wrap colour or a paint colour?
It’s a paint colour. Nardo Grey is a paint name Audi uses on RS models, and Audi’s own media library captions an RS 6 Avant GT and an RS Q3 in it.
Wrap makers don’t sell film under that name. Neither 3M’s 2080 colour brochure nor Avery Dennison’s North American overview lists a Nardo Grey, so “Nardo grey wrap” really means a gloss grey from one of those charts that looks close enough to Audi’s paint for you.
Which 3M and Avery greys come closest?
Several gloss greys are worth a swatch, and none is an official match. These are the candidates printed on each maker’s chart.
| Maker | Film | Code | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M | Gloss Storm Gray | 2080-G31 | Gloss row; also High Gloss, 2080-HG31 |
| 3M | Gloss Anthracite | 2080-G201 | Gloss row |
| Avery | Gloss Grey | SW900-832-O | Gloss column, not metallic |
| Avery | Gloss Rock Grey | SW900-821-O | Gloss column, not metallic |
| Avery | Gloss Misty Grey | SW900-827-O | Gloss column, not metallic |
| Avery | Gloss Dark Grey | SW900-865-O | Gloss column, not metallic |
Judge them by eye, outdoors, beside either the car you’re copying or Audi’s own photographs. If the Audi you’re matching has no visible flake, stay with solid films: Avery’s gloss metallic greys sit in a separate column of its chart and a separate, shorter durability row. Avery also lists a custom colour-match service in its overview, which is worth asking about if none of the stock greys lands close enough.
How does a Nardo-style grey look under BC cloud?
The shop’s view is that a plain mid grey changes less between sun and cloud than almost any other colour. With no flake to catch light and no deep pigment to darken, it reads as roughly the same grey on a bright July afternoon and in a November drizzle.
That matters here. Environment Canada’s 1981–2010 normals for Abbotsford record just under 1,887 hours of sunshine a year, so a car here spends plenty of its daylight under cloud. Under a flat sky, the gloss on a grey wrap picks up the sky and the colour can look almost like primer, which suits the understated look a Nardo-style grey is usually chosen for. A darker film such as Avery’s Gloss Dark Grey holds more contrast on those days.
What makes a gloss grey wrap look right?
Smooth paint under the film. 3M’s installation FAQ warns that dents, scratches, pitting and orange peel can show through any 2080 film, and that high gloss films magnify them.
If your factory paint has heavy orange peel, 3M recommends professional paint correction before high gloss film goes on. 3M also covers its gloss and high gloss colours with a clear top film; the installer works through it and peels it away before post-heating, so squeegee marks never reach the finished surface.
Caring for a gloss grey wrap
Hand wash it, deal with spills straight away, and use only waxes the maker accepts. 3M’s maintenance FAQ puts Meguiar’s Gold Class Carnauba Plus among the products it accepts on smooth or gloss 2080, all on a test-first basis.
- Wipe fuel off at the pump; 3M says it degrades both vinyl and adhesive.
- Soften tree sap with hot, soapy water for several minutes rather than scrubbing.
- If you must use a car wash, make it touchless.
Avery’s SW900 data sheet is stricter on ingredients: any soap, wax or coating carrying solvents or petroleum distillates ends Avery’s warranty. 3M excludes coatings of any kind from its 2080 cover, so a ceramic coating over the wrap isn’t something either maker supports.
Which cars wear a Nardo-style grey well?
In the shop’s view, performance cars with black trim and wheels, where a flat grey makes the details stand out. That covers the Audi RS 5 and RS 7, the Golf R, the GR86 and the WRX. Bright brake calipers stand out well against it.
Warranty and removal for a gloss grey wrap
The makers rate solid gloss greys well, but not in the shop’s terms. The shop’s own wrap page promises a 5-year manufacturer warranty; 3M’s card gives its Zone 2, which takes in Canada on 3M’s zone map, seven years on upright panels and two on horizontal ones. Avery rates its solid colours at 10 and 2 in Zone 1, the zone its durability bulletin assigns to Canada. Ask the shop which term applies to the film you pick.
Coming off later is a heat job, and timing helps. 3M’s removal bulletin wants the temperature above 10 °C because cold film breaks into small pieces, and it notes that film left on longer bonds harder to the paint. Each step is laid out in how a wrap comes off.
Getting a Nardo-style grey quoted
Send the car’s year, make and model, and the two or three greys you want to compare, through the wrap quote form; a text to 604 534 6433 does the same job. Prices are set per vehicle, and what moves them is set out on what a wrap costs. Budget three to five days if the whole car changes colour; cars go in at Unit 312, 20560 Langley Bypass.
