Ceramic coating cure time

How Long Does Ceramic Coating Take to Cure?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

At Brookswood Tint, most of the cure happens in the shop: the visit lasts one to three days, and by the shop's account correction and curing fill most of that, not the application itself. After pickup, keep the car completely dry for 24 hours. Coating makers set their own guidance for full cure, so ask at pickup when the first wash can be and what to avoid in the weeks after.

What does curing mean for a ceramic coating?

Curing is the coating turning from a liquid you wipe on into a hard, bonded layer that can take water and washing. The shop describes its graphene-ceramic as a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to the paint, and that bond needs time to form.

For you, curing has two stages. The first happens in the bay, while the car is still with the shop. The second is the first 24 hours after you drive away, when the job is to keep water off it. After that, it’s a matter of following the shop’s first-wash timing and washing gently.

How long is the car at the shop for a ceramic coating?

One to three days. The coating itself goes on quickly; the shop says most of the visit is correction and curing. How long your car stays depends mostly on how much correction the paint needs before the first layer.

Package Layers Prep under the coating What sets the time
Essential 1, on paint Decontamination wash, clay, then one or more polishing stages An enhancement polish takes about a day on its own
Performance 2, on paint, wheel faces and glass Two-stage correction Two-stage correction takes 1 to 2 days on its own
Signature 4, on paint, PPF, wheels, glass and trim Full correction Set after the paint is inspected and measured

Paint thickness is measured before polishing. If the paint needs multi-stage restoration, which runs three days or more by itself, the timing is quoted after inspection. The stages are explained on paint correction.

What should you avoid in the first 24 hours after pickup?

Water of any kind. The shop asks that a newly coated car stay dry for its first 24 hours, so plan the day around that.

  • No washing, not even a rinse.
  • No rain if you can help it. Park in a garage or carport, or pick a dry day; if a shower catches you anyway, here’s what to do about rain on a new coating.
  • No sprinklers or hoses nearby. A driveway next to a watered garden counts.
  • No wiping. Leave the surface alone while it finishes.

If something does land on the car in that window, call the shop before you try to clean it.

When can you wash a newly coated car?

Not in the first 24 hours, and the first proper wash should follow the timing the shop gives you at pickup. From then on, choose touchless bays or hand washing with a pH-neutral soap and a separate rinse bucket, and keep away from brush tunnels, which the shop warns will mark any finish in time.

Step-by-step washing is on washing a ceramic-coated car.

Is it harder to keep a coating dry in a Fraser Valley winter?

Yes. The 24-hour rule doesn’t change with the season, but a dry day and a dry night are harder to come by from October to March.

Environment Canada’s normals for Abbotsford A show why:

Month Mean daily temperature Days dipping to 0 °C or lower Early-morning humidity
October 10.5 °C About 1 88%
December 2.9 °C About 14 83%
January 3.6 °C About 12 84%

October also averages five or six days of fog. A car left outside on nights like these can be wet with dew or frost by morning even if it doesn’t rain. Cold-season booking has its own page: coating a car in winter.

How do the timelines fit if you’re also getting PPF or tint?

Each service has its own waiting period, and the longest one sets your routine, so plan for all three rules at once.

Service Rule after pickup
Ceramic coating Keep the car dry for 24 hours
Paint protection film First wash after a week; LLumar’s PPF FAQ says three days, the shop asks for seven
Window tint Keep the tinted windows rolled up for 3 to 5 days

The Signature package coats over PPF as well as paint, so film and coating can be done together. For the sequence, read the right order for PPF, coating and tint.

How do you book a coating so the cure goes smoothly?

Match the pickup to a dry spell and line up a garage or carport for night one. Environment Canada’s 7-day forecast for Langley is worth checking at booking and once more on the eve of pickup.

Prices are set car by car, since the paint’s condition decides how much prep comes first. Describe your car and its paint on the coating quote request, or read about the three packages on ceramic coating. Hours are Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00.

Related questions

01Can I drive the car home right after a coating?

Yes. The rule is about water, not driving: the car has to stay dry for a day, so avoid wet roads where you can and park under cover.

02Does a four-layer coating take longer than one layer?

The Signature package sits on full correction and is the longest job overall. The after-pickup rule is the same for every package: 24 hours without water.

03Can a newly coated car sit outside overnight?

Only with a dry forecast and nothing like a lawn sprinkler nearby. A garage or carport is the safer choice for the first night.

04Can I put wax or a spray sealant on the coating while it cures?

Don't add anything to the surface without asking the shop first. Ask at pickup what is safe to use on your package, and when.
