What Happens if It Rains After Ceramic Coating?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

In the first 24 hours after pickup, rain is the one thing to avoid: Brookswood Tint asks you to keep a newly coated car dry for a full day. If you get caught, don't wipe or scrub the wet panels; get the car under cover, let it dry, and call the shop so it can check the finish before anything else is done. After that first day, rain is what the coating is for, beading up and running off instead of sitting on the paint.

What does rain do to a ceramic coating in the first 24 hours?

Possibly nothing, possibly marks that need attention: it depends on how much water landed and how long it sat before drying. That uncertainty is why the shop asks for 24 dry hours, and why it would rather see the car than have you guess.

Water drying on any finish can leave spots behind. On a coating that’s only just come out of the bay, those marks are something to show the shop before you try to remove them, not something to rub at with a towel. Most of the one to three days at the shop goes on correction and curing; the 24 hours after pickup are the last stretch, and the only part in your hands.

What should you do if your new coating gets rained on?

Get the car out of the rain, leave the surface alone, and call the shop. Quick, gentle and hands-off is the whole approach.

  1. Get it under cover as soon as you safely can: a garage, a carport, a parkade.
  2. Don’t wipe, towel or chamois the panels. Rubbing a fresh coating is the thing to avoid.
  3. Let it dry where it’s sheltered.
  4. Note roughly how long it was wet, and take a few photos once it’s dry.
  5. Call or text 604 534 6433 and arrange for the shop to look at it, Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00.

How likely is rain on your pickup day?

It depends heavily on the month. Environment Canada’s climate normals for Abbotsford A, the station just east of Langley, count the average number of days with at least 0.2 mm of precipitation.

Month Wet days on average Share of days
January 20.1 About 65%
February 16.2 About 57%
March 19.1 About 62%
April 16.3 About 54%
May 14.4 About 46%
June 13.0 About 43%
July 7.3 About 23%
August 7.1 About 23%
September 9.6 About 32%
October 15.8 About 51%
November 20.8 About 69%
December 19.8 About 64%

These are 30-year averages, not a forecast. They tell you that a July pickup has roughly a three-in-four chance of a dry day, while a November one is more likely wet than not. For the week itself, look at Environment Canada’s Langley forecast as you book, then again the evening before you collect.

Is rain the only water to watch for in the first day?

No. Rain is the obvious one, but a fresh coating meets water in other ways around Langley.

  • Sprinklers. The City of Langley’s water bylaw puts Stage 1 in force every year from May 1 to October 15. Under it, sprinklers on trees, shrubs and flowers may run any day from 5 to 9 am, and automatic lawn watering runs 5 to 7 am on Saturdays for even-numbered addresses and Sundays for odd. A car parked beside a watered bed can be soaked the morning after pickup.
  • Treated roads. Ahead of forecast snow, the City of Langley brines the routes it treats first, and spray off a brined road wets the lower panels even on a dry day.
  • A car wash. Even a quick rinse waits until the 24 hours are up.

What does rain do to a ceramic coating once it has cured?

Exactly what you paid for. Drops gather into beads and roll away, the paint dries off with less spotting, and grime releases more readily when you next wash.

That’s the coating’s everyday job in a climate as wet as ours, and the case for it is made in coating and BC’s wet weather. A coated car still needs regular washing; the coating makes that faster rather than unnecessary. How it handles spotting over time is on whether ceramic coating prevents water spots.

How do you plan a coating around Fraser Valley weather?

Let the forecast pick your collection day, and keep a roof over the car that first night in any season. If your dates are flexible, July and August give the best odds; from October to March, a garage matters more than the calendar.

The whole job takes one to three days at the shop, and the timeline from drop-off to first wash is on how long ceramic coating takes to cure. Booking between November and March raises its own points, set out in ceramic coating in winter. Each coating is priced for the car. Put the details and the paint’s condition into the quote request for coating, and say if you’d like pickup timed to a dry day.

Related questions

01Is light drizzle as much of a problem as a downpour?

Treat any water the same way in the first 24 hours. Drizzle that dries on the paint can spot it just as a heavier shower can, so cover the car and let the shop know.

02Will the coating have to be redone if it rained on day one?

Not necessarily. Let the shop look at it first; whether anything needs doing depends on what the water left behind.

03What if it's pouring on the morning I'm due to collect the car?

Call before you set off. Ask whether pickup can move to a drier day, or plan a short drive straight into a garage.

04Does rain wash a fresh coating off the car?

Once it has set, no: shedding rain is its job. In the first 24 hours, just keep it dry and call the shop if it does get wet.
