Chrome delete vinyl

Is a Chrome Delete Reversible?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 3 min read

The short answer

Yes, when it's done in cast vinyl. Heat softens the adhesive, the vinyl peels off the trim, and any glue left behind is cleaned away, leaving the original chrome. 3M says its 2080 film removes with heat or chemicals for as long as its warranty runs, and Avery Dennison rates SW900 removable for its full durability period. Painted trim is the version you can't simply peel back.

How does a vinyl chrome delete come off?

With heat, patience and a residue cleaner. Warming the vinyl softens its adhesive so it peels away from the trim, and whatever glue stays behind is dissolved off.

3M’s 2080 maintenance FAQs describe exactly that: removal may need heat and/or chemicals, “some adhesive residue may be left on the vehicle”, and that residue comes off with a product such as 3M’s citrus-based industrial cleaner. 3M recommends a wrap professional do the removal.

Pieces that were taken off the car to be wrapped come off again for the reverse job. Brookswood Tint removes badges, handles and mirror caps when they can come off, so the vinyl wraps the whole part, and puts them back with the right clips and fasteners. Reversing a delete on those parts is the same process run backwards.

How long does a chrome delete stay easy to remove?

For as long as the film maker’s removal window runs, which is years on upright trim. Past that window, the vinyl can still come off, but neither maker promises it will come off cleanly.

Film Removal the maker stands behind Fine print
3M 2080 “Removable with heat and/or chemicals from most surfaces within the warranty period” Up to 7 years vertical and 2 years horizontal in Canada (3M Zone 2); only if unprinted and not overlaminated
Avery SW900 Removable “for the length of the applicable durability period” “Clean” means less than 20% adhesive residue after heat and chemical removal

Those two quotes come from 3M’s 2080 product bulletin and Avery’s SW900 data sheet. The practical rule: if you think you’ll want the chrome back, plan the removal before the sky-facing pieces pass their horizontal rating, not years after.

What can go wrong when the vinyl comes off?

Inside the makers’ windows, the usual result is bare trim and some glue to clean off. Problems come from the surface under the vinyl, and both makers list where they won’t promise a clean result.

  • Weak paint. Avery won’t warrant removal from paint with poor adhesion, improperly cured paint, or oxidized and chalky surfaces. Wrapped edges that touch body paint follow the same rules.
  • Older paint. Avery makes no warranty for removal from automotive paint more than 5 years old.
  • Stainless steel. Avery doesn’t warrant removability from stainless steel at all. Some bright trim is stainless, so ask what yours is made of before it’s wrapped.
  • Paint pull. 3M’s warranty card says its coverage “does not include paint pull during film removal process”.
  • Cracked vinyl. Avery doesn’t warrant staining visible after removing film that had already cracked or discoloured, and advises acting at the first sign of change.

None of these are reasons to avoid a chrome delete. They’re reasons to wrap trim that’s in good shape and take the vinyl off before it’s worn out.

Does a chrome delete protect the chrome underneath?

It covers it, which keeps road grime and scrapes off the bright finish for as long as the vinyl is on. It doesn’t repair anything: pitting, corrosion or scratches that were in the chrome before wrapping are still there when it comes off.

That is worth a look before the job. Photos of the trim on drop-off day give you a record of what it looked like going in.

Which chrome delete methods can’t be undone?

Paint. A painted or sprayed coating bonds to the trim with nothing to peel, so going back to chrome means stripping the part or replacing it. Swapping chrome parts for factory black ones is reversible only if you keep the originals.

The three ways of blacking out trim are set side by side in vinyl vs paint vs plasti-dip. The shop works in vinyl because it can come off, and because a car wrap can be removed the same way.

Booking a chrome delete you can reverse later

Tell the shop at the quote if you expect to go back to chrome, for a sale, a lease return or a change of mind; it helps decide which pieces come off the car and which are wrapped in place. Lease drivers should also read chrome delete on a leased car, which covers return inspections and timing.

The shop uses 3M and Avery Dennison cast vinyl and publishes a 5-year manufacturer warranty on it. Lifespan by piece is covered in how long a chrome delete lasts, and the service itself on chrome delete. Each car is quoted on its own: use the chrome delete request to list the trim you’d like blacked out, or text photos of it to 604 534 6433.

Related questions

01Can I peel off a chrome delete myself?

You can, but 3M recommends having a wrap professional remove its 2080 film. Trim pieces with clips and badges that were taken off for wrapping are where home removal most often goes wrong.

02Will the chrome look the same once the vinyl is off?

The vinyl has covered it, so the chrome under it is in whatever state it was when it was wrapped, plus some adhesive to clean off. Pitting or scratches that were there before wrapping are still there.

03Can I go back to chrome on just a few pieces?

Yes. Each piece is wrapped separately, so the grille can return to chrome while the window trim stays black, or the other way round.

04Is a sprayed or painted chrome delete reversible?

Not in the same way. There's no film to lift, so going back means stripping the coating or replacing the part, which is why the shop does chrome delete in vinyl.
