Which badges and emblems can be blacked out?
Any chrome badge that can be wrapped or taken off and wrapped: the maker’s emblem front and rear, the model name on the trunk lid or tailgate, trim scripts, engine or drivetrain badges on the fenders, and raised chrome lettering on a truck’s tailgate. The one exception is an emblem that doubles as a radar cover.
| Badge | Where it usually sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Maker’s emblem, front | Centre of the grille or nose | May sit in front of a radar sensor; check the owner’s manual |
| Maker’s emblem, rear | Trunk lid, hatch or tailgate | If it comes off, it can be wrapped whole |
| Model name and trim scripts | Rear of the car, sometimes the doors | Separate letters on some cars, one piece on others |
| Fender badges | Behind the front wheels | Small and close to road spray, so edges matter |
| Tailgate lettering | Pickups | Raised chrome letters; quoted from a close photo |
Badges belong to the shop’s front and rear package with the grille and bumper trim, but you can book them alone. The grille itself has its own page, grille blackout.
Why do badges come off the car before they’re wrapped?
Because a badge wrapped whole has no visible edge. Where a badge can be removed, Brookswood Tint takes it off, wraps every face of it, and refits it with the right clips and fasteners; where it can’t, the vinyl is trimmed tightly around it on the car.
The shop’s rule on refitting is that nothing goes back glued that wasn’t glued at the factory. That matters on emblems held by clips or studs, which go back on the same way they came off, so the car can return to chrome later without a repair.
3M names emblems among the uses of its 2080 wrap film, and gives the film’s thickness, measured on its matte black, as 4.5 mil with adhesive, about 0.11 mm. That thinness is why a model script still reads clearly in black: the film adds a fraction of a millimetre over each raised letter rather than filling the gaps between them.
Which emblems should stay chrome because of radar?
Any emblem that sits in front of a radar sensor. Some carmakers mount the radar for adaptive cruise and collision braking directly behind the front badge, and their manuals tell owners not to cover it.
Honda’s 2024 Accord owner’s manual is explicit. It says “The radar sensor is behind the Honda emblem on the front grille,” then lists, among its precautions, “Do not put any stickers or paint on the emblem or front grille” and “Do not replace the emblem, front grille, or bumper.” On a car built that way, the front emblem keeps its factory finish while the rest of the badges go black.
Before you book: look up “radar sensor” in your owner’s manual. If it names the front emblem or a flat panel in the grille, tell the shop. 3M’s bulletin also recommends never applying its film over vehicle sensors, and puts checking compatibility on the owner and the carmaker.
Gloss black, satin black, or keep a little colour?
Pick the finish that matches the black already on the car, then decide whether any colour stays. Gloss black suits gloss roofs, mirror caps and piano-black trim; satin black sits quietly beside textured plastic and hides fingerprints on a badge you touch every time you open the hatch.
Some owners don’t go all black. On some badges a coloured logo can keep its colour while the chrome around it goes dark, and a single bright emblem on an otherwise blacked-out car is a look of its own, as the M badge in the photo on this page shows. The shop holds gloss and satin samples against the car so you can see the difference before anything is cut.
How long does vinyl on badges hold up?
Years, with careful washing, though 3M itself expects less from film on flat surfaces. A trunk-lid or hood emblem faces the sky, while a tailgate script or a grille badge stands vertical, and 3M’s warranty table for 2080 gives horizontal surfaces a shorter term than vertical ones. The numbers are set out in how long a chrome delete lasts.
The vinyl carries a five-year manufacturer warranty in the shop’s published terms. Small badges have a lot of edge for their size, so touchless or hand washing, with no brushes and the pressure nozzle kept back, does the most for their life. If the car is leased, read chrome delete on a leased car before booking, since the lease may require the chrome back at return.
Why not spray the badges black instead?
The shop’s view is that sprayed coatings and paint on trim chip and fade, and paint can’t be peeled back off. The trade-offs between vinyl, paint and a peel-off coating are laid out in vinyl vs paint vs Plasti Dip.
Vinyl also needs warmth to go on properly. 3M wants its 2080 film applied between 18 and 24 °C, so badges are wrapped indoors at the shop, never in a cold November driveway.
How do you book a badge blackout in Langley?
Take a close photo of every badge you’d like black, front and back of the car, sharp enough to read the letters. Attach them to the chrome delete request with the year, make, model and trim, or text them to 604 534 6433, and note your finish and any radar-based driver assists.
Badges pair naturally with the grille and the window trim, and how the whole job is priced is on chrome delete cost. Cars are booked into the Langley Bypass shop, Unit 312 at number 20560, six days a week.
