Paint protection film and paint chips

Will PPF Hide Existing Rock Chips?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

No. Paint protection film is made to be optically clear, so a chip under it stays visible; the film covers it and stops new chips around it, but it doesn't fill the chip or hide its colour. If the panel needs to look right under film, the chips get repaired first, and the kind of repair you choose sets the timing.

Hides chips?
No; the film is optically clear
Polishing removes chips?
No; it levels the clear coat
Wait after a paint repair
30 days is common (LLumar)
Bare metal showing
Repair promptly (Kia owner's manual)
After film
New chips stopped on covered panels

What does a rock chip look like under PPF?

Exactly as it did before, under a clear layer. Film is built to be seen through: LLumar says Platinum Matte is built for optical clarity, keeping the paint’s true colour visible, and calls Platinum Extra “virtually invisible” and “optically clear.”

That clarity is the reason film can’t hide anything. A chip is a small crater where paint is missing, often showing a lighter layer beneath the colour. The film lies over it, and you see the crater through the film. What the film changes is the future: stones that hit the covered panel from then on land on film, not paint. For how much new damage film can take, see PPF against fresh rock chips.

What are your options for chips before film goes on?

Leave them, touch them up, or have the panel refinished. Polishing isn’t one of the options, because it can’t add back paint that’s gone.

Option What it does to the chip Before film Under film afterwards
Leave as is Nothing No wait Chip visible; new stones hit film instead of paint
Touch-up paint Fills the chip with matching paint Wait for the touch-up to settle Filled chip, may show up close
Body shop refinish Repaints the panel About 30 days for new paint to outgas A fresh, even panel
Polishing or correction Nothing for the chip itself Levels swirls and light scratches around it Chip still visible

Paint correction is still worth doing on a chipped car if the paint also has swirls or light scratches, since film would lock those in too. It just won’t touch the chips.

Which chips can’t wait for a decision?

The ones that go down to bare metal. Kia’s owner’s manual wants deep scratches and stone chips fixed without delay, warning that bare metal rusts quickly and can turn into an expensive fix.

Its corrosion section adds the practical steps: touch up chips and scratches as soon as you can to cut the chance of corrosion, and take any chip that’s down to bare metal to a qualified body shop. In a wet Fraser Valley winter, a bare-metal chip is not something to seal under film and forget.

Matte paint is the exception: Kia’s matte paint bulletin advises against touch-up on matte paint, warning that a repair can end with a new part or a whole-body repaint. On a matte car, a chip is a body shop conversation.

How long after a chip repair can PPF go on?

Long enough for the new paint to finish outgassing. LLumar’s PPF FAQ says freshly painted surfaces usually get 30 days to outgas before film goes on.

LLumar also points out that it builds its film for factory paint, and that faults in repainted or touched-up areas fall outside its warranty. That doesn’t stop film going over a touched-up chip or a refinished bumper; it means a paint fault in the repaired spot is outside LLumar’s cover. Plan the order this way:

  1. Repair the chips, by touch-up or at a body shop.
  2. Let the paint sit; a refinished panel needs about 30 days.
  3. Book the film. The paint is decontaminated and, where needed, corrected first.
  4. Wait a week before the first wash.

Does film stop an existing chip from getting worse?

Don’t count on it. LLumar’s pages describe protecting paint from hazards like flying rocks, road salt and sand; they make no claim that film seals, stabilizes or repairs damage already there.

So the honest order is repair first, film second. Film is protection from here on, not a substitute for the repair Kia’s manual calls for. If you’re buying a car with a chipped nose, PPF on a used car covers what else to check before film.

What should you book for a chipped front end?

Get the chips assessed and repaired by your chosen body or touch-up specialist, then film the front end before the next round of stones. The film packages:

Where your chips were Package that covers that area next time Starting price Days
Bumper, headlights, mirrors, the front edge of the hood Partial Front $850 About 1
Spread up the hood and along the fenders Full Front $1,550 1 to 2
Also on the sills behind the front wheels Track Package $1,900 1 to 2

Each one is a starting price in LLumar Platinum, backed by LLumar for 10 years. If your chips come from a Highway 1 commute, Highway 1 chip habits covers the driving side too, and if you were weighing a wrap instead, wrapping over chipped paint answers that. Once the repairs are booked, price the film on the PPF quote page; the shop also answers texts at 604 534 6433.

Related questions

01Will PPF stop an existing chip from getting worse?

Don't rely on it. LLumar makes no claim that film seals or repairs a chip, and Kia's advice is to repair deep chips promptly, so treat the repair as the fix and the film as protection from new ones.

02Can paint correction take out rock chips?

No. Correction levels the clear coat to remove swirls and light scratches; a chip is paint that's missing, so it needs touch-up or refinishing instead.

03Do I have to fix every chip before getting PPF?

No, that's your call. Unrepaired chips stay visible under the film, but chips down to bare metal should be repaired first on Kia's advice.

04Does matte film hide chips better than gloss film?

LLumar doesn't claim it does. Platinum Matte changes the sheen of the surface, and LLumar describes it as engineered for optical clarity, so what's underneath still shows.
