Ceramic Coating Over PPF in Langley

At a glance

Yes, a ceramic coating can go over paint protection film. At Brookswood Tint it's built into the four-layer Signature package, which coats the PPF along with the paint, wheels, glass and trim. Film is always fitted first, and the coating then covers film and bare paint in the same session; LLumar recommends that nothing be coated onto the paint before its film. Expect a price for your specific car and a stay of one to three days.

What does a ceramic coating over PPF include?

The shop’s four-layer Signature package is the one that lists PPF among the surfaces it coats, along with paint, wheels, glass and trim. Like every coating here, it’s quoted per vehicle, with the price set by the car’s size, the package and the prep the paint needs.

Package Layers Surfaces it names Prep underneath
Essential 1 Paint Ask when quoting
Performance 2 Paint, wheel faces, glass Two-stage correction
Signature 4 Paint, PPF, wheels, glass, trim Full correction

Essential and Performance don’t name film in their surface lists. If your car has PPF and you’d rather one of those, ask how the filmed panels are handled before you book. The packages and what drives the price are on the ceramic coating page and ceramic coating cost.

Why coat paint protection film that already repels water?

Because the coating covers more than the film. LLumar’s Platinum Gloss page credits the film’s HydroGard top coat with repelling water and resisting stains, but that protection ends at the last edge of film.

If your film covers only the front, the coating goes over the filmed panels and the uncovered doors, roof and rear in one session, so rain and road grime leave every panel the same way and washing is one routine for the whole car. That’s the shop’s reason for coating over film, and the four-layer package is the one it builds for full-PPF cars.

LLumar makes the same pairing in a single product. Its Valor film combines self-healing PPF with what LLumar calls a “ceramic-style finish,” pitched for “effortless washing and less dirt build-up.” Valor isn’t in the shop’s packages; with Platinum, the coating is the step that adds that kind of surface. Film and coating do different jobs, set out in PPF vs ceramic coating.

Why does the film always go on before the coating?

Because a coating underneath would get in the way of the film’s adhesive. LLumar’s PPF FAQ says it doesn’t recommend wax or any other coating on a car before its film is installed, since either can interfere with how the film holds to the paint.

The working order never changes: clean and, if necessary, correct the paint; fit the film; then coat the film and the paint as one surface. If your car is already coated and you now want film, say so on the booking, because that coating affects the prep for the panels getting film; whether a coating can come off is covered in can ceramic coating be removed. When tint is part of the same visit, which comes first: PPF, ceramic or tint sets out the sequence.

Can film that’s already on your car be coated?

Yes. A coating doesn’t have to go on in the same visit as the film; it can be added later, and the film’s condition becomes part of the quote.

Tell the shop roughly how old the film is and who fitted it, and point out any edge that has started to lift or any piece with a stain or a tear. Those are worth sorting out before a coating goes over them, since a coating doesn’t repair film. On a car with a fresh install, the coating can simply follow the film in the same visit.

Can matte PPF be coated?

It can, with a coating made to keep a flat finish flat. LLumar’s matte film carries the same HydroGard top coat as the gloss version, and anything that adds shine works against the satin look.

The choices for flat finishes, on film and on factory paint, are covered on ceramic coating for matte paint. Mention the film’s finish on the quote request so the right product is planned.

How do you wash PPF once it has a coating?

The same way as uncoated film: hand wash or touchless, no brush washes, and no pressure-washer nozzle near the film edges. A new coating needs a full day without water. New film needs seven days before its first wash under the shop’s rule, longer than the 72 hours in LLumar’s FAQ.

LLumar steers owners away from pressure washers and automatic car washes, since both can pull film up at its edges, and its limited warranty doesn’t pay for lifting caused that way. Putting a coating on top doesn’t alter any of this. LLumar’s Platinum Gloss page expects owners to “wash, wax, and drive” with the film on; whether wax belongs on top of a coating is a separate question, answered in waxing over a ceramic coating. The full routine for film is on how to wash a car with PPF.

What happens to the PPF warranty under a coating?

LLumar’s published FAQ doesn’t address coatings applied over its film, and its product pages say only that certain restrictions apply and the dealer holds the warranty details. So ask the shop how the 10-year limited warranty reads for coated Platinum film, and keep both invoices.

The shop’s own published terms for the film list yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling. Those describe how the film ages, which is a different question from what a coating does on top of it.

How do you book a coating over PPF in Langley?

On the ceramic coating quote form, list the car, the filmed panels, the film’s finish and its rough age. The coating takes one to three days, longer when film is fitted in the same visit, and the car needs a dry 24 hours after you collect it.

Questions about ceramic coating over PPF

01Do I need to wait after PPF is installed before it's coated?

Ask the shop to schedule it. When film and coating are booked together the coating follows the film in the same visit, and if you're adding a coating to film fitted elsewhere, give its age and installer so the film's condition is part of the quote.

02Will a coating hide the edges of my PPF?

No. A coating is far too thin to fill or hide a film edge. What it changes is how the surface behaves when wet, not where the film's edges are.

03Can a coating go over a partial front only?

Yes. The coating can cover the filmed front and the bare paint behind it, which is usually the point: the whole car then sheds water the same way.

04Is coated film harder to remove later?

The shop hasn't published anything on that, and neither has LLumar. If you expect to remove the film within a few years, raise it when you get your quote.
