What Is Laminated Glass?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Laminated glass is two sheets of glass bonded together with a plastic interlayer such as polyvinyl butyral (PVB), so that a broken pane stays in one piece instead of falling apart. Windshields are built this way, and some cars use it for side windows, back glass or roofs as well.

Built from
Two glass sheets and a plastic (PVB) interlayer
When it breaks
The interlayer holds the pieces together
Where you'll find it
Windshields; some side, rear and roof glass
Windshield UVA blocked

Where tint goes
The inner glass surface, never the interlayer

How is laminated glass made?

Two sheets of glass are bonded with a plastic layer between them. AGC, a car glass maker, describes its laminated glass as a process that “bonds two pieces of glass together using a plastic interlayer sheet,” and says it’s mandatory for windshields under road regulations.

Hyundai’s 2023 Palisade service bulletin names that layer: the glass sheets are pressed together after polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film is inserted between them. The interlayer can carry more than strength. Laminated privacy glass uses a dark PVB instead of a clear one, so its shade is sealed inside the pane, and a sound-damping PVB makes acoustic glass.

How does it differ from tempered glass?

Laminated glass is a bonded sandwich; tempered glass is one heat-treated sheet. The two behave differently when hit and when the sun is on them.

Laminated Tempered
Build Two sheets and a PVB interlayer One sheet, heated then air-cooled
When broken Interlayer holds the fragments together Breaks into small fragments without sharp edges
Usual position Windshield; some side, rear and roof glass Most side windows and back glass
Average UVA blocked, 29 cars 96% (windshields) 71% (side windows)

The UVA figures come from a 2016 JAMA Ophthalmology study by Boxer Wachler. The Skin Cancer Foundation says the laminated windshield is treated to block some UVA, while the tempered side and back glass “does not block UVA rays effectively.”

What does laminated glass mean for tint in BC?

The glass type doesn’t change where film is allowed; the window’s position does. Film always goes on the inner glass face, so the interlayer is never touched.

For windshields, BC’s MVAR s. 7.05(8) keeps film to the band within 75 mm of the top. A full windshield, filmed from the inside, is available from $200 for customers who ask, once the shop has explained that it can’t be driven legally here: the usual fine is $109, and a Notice & Order can send the car for inspection with the film stripped. Laminated side glass follows the side-window rule: none of any shade on the front doors, clear included, and any darkness behind the driver.

Where laminated glass sits on your car decides the rest. Tinting acoustic laminated side glass covers door glass, windshield tint covers the front pane, and what film does when someone smashes a window compares both glass types under attack.

Questions about laminated glass

01Why are windshields made of laminated glass?

AGC, which makes car glass, says road regulations make laminated glass mandatory for windshields. The interlayer keeps the pane together, cutting the risk of flying shards or a passenger being thrown out in a crash.

02Can a chipped laminated windshield be repaired?

Often. ICBC handles windshield chips under Comprehensive with no deductible for a repair, which must be done at an ICBC-approved facility on a chip smaller than a loonie. A replacement carries the deductible.

03Where does the colour come from in laminated privacy glass?

From inside the glass. Hyundai's service bulletin explains that laminated privacy glass uses a dark PVB interlayer instead of a clear one.
