What Is Acoustic Glass?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Acoustic glass is laminated glass whose plastic interlayer is formulated to damp sound, so less wind, road and engine noise reaches the cabin. The sound-damping layer is sealed between the two sheets of glass, where window film never reaches it.

What it is
Laminated glass with a sound-damping interlayer
Noise it targets
Wind, road, engine and passing traffic
Still audible
Horns and sirens, per AGC
Where it's fitted
Windshields and, on some trims, door glass
BC tint rule
Set by window position, not glass type

How does acoustic glass cut noise?

Through its interlayer. Ordinary laminated glass already has a plastic layer between two sheets; acoustic glass swaps in one made for sound. Hyundai’s 2023 Palisade bulletin says ordinary PVB already damps wind and road noise, and that the acoustic version swaps in a PVB “specifically designed for improved sound insulation.”

AGC’s page for its laminated acoustic glass lists what it quietens: wind, engine, air friction, road surface noise and passing vehicles. Loud warnings such as horns and sirens remain audible. AGC also says the acoustic layer lets carmakers use a thinner windshield without making the cabin noisier, and it offers the glass for windshields, side windows, rear windows and roofs.

Which windows have acoustic glass?

Which glass a car gets varies with model, trim and year, so the maker’s specifications are the place to check. The Palisade shows how much it moves around within one model. For 2023, Hyundai fitted acoustic laminated glass in the front doors of every trim except the SE, and acoustic laminated privacy glass in the second-row doors of the SEL Premium, Limited and Calligraphy only. The third row stayed tempered on all of them.

The same bulletin notes one side effect: in direct sun, that acoustic privacy glass can look slightly hazy because of its dark PVB. Hyundai calls it a natural characteristic of the glass, so it’s worth pointing out before any tint goes on.

What does acoustic glass mean for tint in BC?

Nothing about the glass changes the rule; the window’s position sets it. Film bonds to the inner glass surface, so the sound-damping layer is never touched, and MVAR s. 7.05(8) treats an acoustic pane like any other.

That matters on cars where the acoustic glass is in the front doors. Those count as front side windows, where BC permits no film whatever its shade, clear included. An owner who still wants them filmed can have it done, but the shop first makes clear the film isn’t legal on the road, and that it can earn a fine of about $109 or a Notice & Order that means removal plus an inspection. Acoustic rear doors can take any darkness. Near-clear LLumar AIR is the option for heat without much shade.

When you book, give the year, make, model and trim. The full answer on fitting film to this glass is tinting acoustic laminated side glass, and the front-door rule is covered on tinting front windows in BC.

Questions about acoustic glass

01Is acoustic glass the same as double-pane glass?

No. AGC describes its acoustic glass as two sheets bonded to a plastic interlayer between them, a laminated pane rather than two panes separated by a gap.

02Will I still hear sirens through acoustic glass?

Yes. AGC says powerful outside sounds such as horns and sirens remain audible through its laminated acoustic glass.

03Did older Palisades have acoustic rear glass?

No. Hyundai's bulletin says acoustic laminated privacy glass arrived in the rear doors for the 2023 model year; 2020 to 2022 models used non-acoustic laminated privacy glass there.
