What does a used-car refresh at the shop cover?
The glass, the lamps and the paint: three jobs that change how a second-hand car looks, booked together or one at a time. Interior cleaning, upholstery and mechanical work aren’t on the shop’s service list.
| Job | What it fixes | Typical time | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tint removal | Purple, bubbling or illegal film | 1–3 hours | Per window, discounted with new film |
| New rear tint | Bare or freshly stripped glass behind the driver | 2–4 hours for a full tint | From $220, $240 or $260 (LLumar ATC) |
| Headlight restoration | Yellow or hazy lenses | About 1 hour to half a day | Quoted per car |
| Paint polish | Wash swirls and light marks in the clear coat | About a day for one stage | Quoted after measuring |
ICBC’s advice on inspecting a used vehicle points at two of these directly. It tells buyers to look the car over for dents, rust, ripples and signs of a repaint, and to confirm that modifications “such as suspension lift-kits or window tinting” have been inspected and approved.
What should you check on the tint you inherited?
Its colour, its surface and which windows it’s on. Each points to a different fix, and the last one is a legal question, not a cosmetic one.
- Purple film. Film that has turned purple can’t be brought back in place; it comes off, as the purple tint page explains.
- Bubbles. Bubbles in film that’s months or years old mean the adhesive has let go. Failed glue won’t grip again, so that film is stripped too.
- Film on the front door glass. Under MVAR s. 7.05(8), the two front door windows can’t carry film of any darkness, and a windshield can only carry a strip at the top, 75 mm deep. Once the car is yours, so is the risk of a $109 ticket or a Notice & Order. What to do after buying a car with front tint covers the seller’s side and the paperwork.
Old film is steamed off rather than cut, which protects the defroster lines on the back glass, and every trace of glue is dissolved. Any shade is allowed behind the driver, so rear film in good condition can stay. ICBC’s buyers’ checklist also points to the status classification on the registration: a CANADIAN IMPORT or FOREIGN IMPORT code shows the car was brought in from outside BC. A car coming from another province or country must clear an inspection at a designated facility before it can be registered (MVAR ss. 25.24 and 25.25), and that inspection fails front film under item 13d.
Should the headlights be restored or replaced?
Restored, when the yellowing or haze sits on the outside of the lens. Replaced, when there’s moisture inside the lamp or the housing is cracked, because no amount of polishing reaches those.
BC’s 2025 inspection manual fails a lamp under item 1.0(a) when the “lens is clouded”, and separately when “moisture is present inside the lamp assembly”. The shop’s three levels of headlight restoration:
| Option | What it involves | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Polish and seal | Light surface haze polished off, lens sealed | About an hour |
| Full restoration | Progressive wet sanding, polishing, sealing | 2–3 hours |
| Restoration plus STEK film | Full restoration, then clear or smoked light film | Half a day |
The film option needs a warning: that same item fails any lens “covered in any manner”. That means smoked or yellow light film on the front or rear lamps can fail an inspection, and clear film may draw questions. If the previous owner put smoked film on the lamps, it runs into that item too. Whether haze alone can fail a car is answered in whether cloudy headlights can fail a BC inspection.
How much polishing does a used car’s paint need?
The least that removes the marks you can see. Paint thickness is measured on each panel first, so the installer can see how much paint each panel carries, repainted panels included.
Paint correction comes in three levels:
- Enhancement polish: one stage, about a day, for light wash swirls and dullness.
- Two-stage correction: 1–2 days, for heavier swirls and marks.
- Multi-stage restoration: three-plus days, priced after the paint is inspected, for neglected finishes.
Polishing works on the paint’s surface. It won’t lift a dent or stop rust, so ICBC’s advice to check for those is worth following before you buy.
Can tint, lights and polish be done in one visit?
Yes, and booking them together saves trips. Removal adds 1–3 hours to a tint job that typically takes 2–4, headlight work runs from an hour to half a day, and an enhancement polish needs about a day, so a full refresh may keep the car one or two days. Ask for the dates with your quote.
Keep the windows shut for 3–5 days after pickup so the new film can cure; some haze during that first week is normal. If you want to go further once the paint is corrected, a graphene-ceramic ceramic coating can go on the polished paint, and PPF on a used car works once the paint has been checked.
Booking a used-car refresh in Langley
Rear-glass tint in LLumar ATC begins at $220 on a sports coupe (three windows), $240 on a sedan or pickup (five) and $260 on a wagon or full-size SUV (seven). Ceramic IRX and AIR are upgrades, priced per car, and the warranty on new film and its installation is for life. Full price lists are on window tint pricing.
Use the quote form for the year, make and model, and list what you’ve noticed: tint colour or bubbles, which windows have film, how the headlights look, and the state of the paint. Photos help. Brookswood Tint is at Unit 312, 20560 Langley Bypass, open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00; call or text 604 534 6433.
