Colour-Shift (Chameleon) Car Wrap

At a glance

A colour-shift, or chameleon, wrap is cast vinyl that shows a different colour depending on the angle you see it from, so one panel can read as red, then gold, as you walk past. 3M sells these films as 2080 Gloss Flip and Satin Flip, and Avery Dennison as ColorFlow. Brookswood Tint in Langley installs both brands, quoted per vehicle, and a whole-car change takes 3 to 5 days. Avery gives its colour-shift range shorter ratings than its solid colours, and every piece has to run in the same direction.

How does a colour-shift wrap change colour?

It changes with the angle between the light, the panel and your eye. Stand at the front of the car and a curved fender shows one colour; walk to the side and the same fender shows another, with a blend where the panel bends.

The makers name their films by that behaviour. Avery Dennison labels each ColorFlow film with its pair, such as red/gold or silver/green, while 3M calls its range Gloss Flip and Satin Flip. A curved panel presents many angles at once, so it shows several colours side by side, and both makers sell gloss and satin versions, the gloss sharper and the satin softer. Brookswood Tint lists colour-shift alongside gloss, satin, matte, metallic and textured among the finishes it installs, and because the effect depends on light, the only fair test is a sample held against your car outdoors.

Which colour-shift films can you choose from?

Both brands publish their colour-shift ranges with codes, and the code is what should go on your quote. 3M names its flips without saying which colours they move between; Avery describes each ColorFlow film by its pair.

From 3M’s 2080 brochure:

  • Gloss Flip Psychedelic, GP281, and Satin Flip Psychedelic, SP281
  • Gloss Flip Deep Space, GP278, plus a High Gloss Flip Deep Space, HGP278
  • Satin Flip Volcanic Flare, SP236
  • Satin Flip Ghost Pearl, SP280

From Avery Dennison’s North American Supreme Wrapping Film overview:

ColorFlow film Code Colour pair, as Avery lists it
Gloss Rising Sun SW900-447-S Red/gold
Gloss Urban Jungle SW900-787-S Silver/green
Gloss Roaring Thunder SW900-552-S Blue/red
Gloss Fresh Spring SW900-252-S Silver/gold
Satin Roaring Thunder SW900-551-S Blue/red
Satin Rising Sun SW900-446-S Red/gold

Several ColorFlow colours come in both gloss and satin, and 3M notes its range differs between countries, which the quote checks against what Canada can get. Purple pairings such as Rushing Riptide and Lightning Ridge have a page of their own at colour-shift purple.

Why must a colour-shift wrap go on in one direction?

Because the film looks different when a piece is turned. Both makers tell installers to keep colour-shift film in the same orientation on every panel, or the doors and fenders won’t match even though they came off the same roll.

3M’s 2080 product bulletin says its colour flip films may have a directional appearance and prints arrows on each roll’s liner to guide the install, and it tells installers not to alternate the orientation from one panel to the next. Avery’s SW900 data sheet says the same for its ColorFlow films and wants a single roll used per vehicle where it can be.

The rule carries into the paperwork. A quote for a colour-shift car should name one film and one production lot for every panel, mirrors and trim included, so nothing has to be pieced in from a different roll later.

How long is a colour-shift wrap rated to last?

Avery rates ColorFlow for fewer years than any of its solid colours. Its data sheet gives these terms, in years unless marked:

Avery SW900 family Zone 1 vertical Zone 1 horizontal Zone 2 vertical Zone 2 horizontal
ColorFlow Series 4 1 3 6 months
Solid colours, for comparison 10 2 8 6 months

3M doesn’t separate its flips from other 2080 colours: its warranty card lists the same Zone 2 term for every colour, 7 years upright and 2 flat, and Zone 2 is where 3M puts Canada. Ask which term covers the exact flip you choose, since what the shop publishes is a five-year manufacturer term.

The horizontal figures suggest a way to plan. The curved sides of a car are where a flip has the most angles to work with, and the roof and hood are the panels rated for the shortest time. One option is to keep the flip on the body sides and put the roof in gloss black; whether that suits your car is a design call.

What happens if a colour-shift panel gets damaged?

3M’s advice is to replace rather than patch, and with a flip the direction rule applies to every repair. 3M’s care and removal bulletin says film that has weathered outdoors can’t be repaired back to its original state, and recommends replacing whole components, or the full wrap, on vehicle wraps.

On that point, 3M’s patching steps say a patch on a film with metallic flake must run the same way as the original piece, and its flips carry the same directional warning. Its 2080 maintenance FAQ adds that a new section may stand apart from the rest because lots differ and the original film has faded or changed in gloss. Keep the film code and the lot or run number: both go on 3M’s warranty card, which must be presented with the original invoice to claim.

How do you book a chameleon wrap in Langley?

Shortlist two or three films, then pass the codes, plus the year, make and model, to the shop by text at 604 534 6433 or through the wrap quote form. Ask to see samples outdoors before committing, since a flip on a screen and a flip in daylight can look like different films.

Plan on 3 to 5 days in the bay for a full colour-shift change, and the same day to two days for accents such as mirror caps or a spoiler. Cars come in to 20560 Langley Bypass, Unit 312, on any weekday or Saturday between 9:00 and 17:00. The colour change wrap page covers what a full wrap includes, from door jambs to the paint check, and the vinyl wrap buyer’s guide compares every finish before you decide.

Questions about colour-shift wrap

01What's the difference between a chameleon wrap and colour-shift paint?

The look is similar, but the wrap is vinyl over your existing paint and comes off with heat, while colour-shift paint is a permanent refinish. A wrap leaves the original colour in the door jambs unless you add them to the job.

02Can a chameleon wrap be done on just the mirrors or the roof?

Yes. Accents like mirror caps, a spoiler or stripes in a flip film are smaller jobs that usually take the same day to two days. On a roof, remember that a horizontal panel carries the shortest rating.

03Do colour-shift wraps look the same in person as in photos?

Not exactly, because the colour you see depends on the light and your angle to the panel. Avery makes 5 by 8 inch samples available for review before use, and one held against the car in daylight tells you far more than a screen.
