Gloss Black Car Wrap

At a glance

A gloss black wrap gives the deepest, most mirror-like finish vinyl can offer, and it's also the least forgiving of what's underneath: 3M warns that high gloss film magnifies paint defects such as orange peel. 3M sells it as Gloss Black (2080-G12) and High Gloss Black (2080-HG12); Avery Dennison as Gloss Black (SW900-190-O) and Gloss Obsidian Black (SW900-191-O). Brookswood Tint inspects the paint before any film goes on and quotes each car individually.

Why is gloss black the hardest wrap colour to get right?

Because it shows everything under it. 3M’s 2080 installation FAQ says rust, dents, scratches, pitting, fisheyes and orange peel can all be visible through its film, and that high gloss colours magnify them.

Black adds its own problem: it reflects the most and hides the least. 3M asks for a clean, dust-free bay for its high gloss films because anything trapped under them shows. That’s why the shop inspects the paint before any film goes on, and why 3M recommends professional paint correction first when a car has heavy orange peel. Without it, 3M says, high gloss film takes on the orange-peel texture of the paint below.

Which gloss black films do 3M and Avery make?

Both makers have a solid black, a metallic black and a choice of shades. These come from 3M’s 2080 colour brochure and Avery Dennison’s North American overview.

Maker Film Code
3M Gloss Black 2080-G12
3M High Gloss Black 2080-HG12
3M Gloss Black Metallic 2080-G212
3M High Gloss Black Metallic 2080-HG212
Avery Gloss Black SW900-190-O
Avery Gloss Obsidian Black SW900-191-O
Avery Gloss Metallic Black SW900-192-M
Avery Gloss Metallic Mystery Black SW900-184-M

Every gloss and high gloss 2080 roll carries a clear top sheet that the installer leaves in place through stretching and squeegeeing, peeling it just before post-heating. On black that matters, because 3M says the layer cuts surface impressions and scratches while the film is being worked.

How does gloss black look on a grey Fraser Valley day?

In the shop’s view, darker than it does in photos. Under a flat overcast sky, gloss black mostly mirrors the cloud, so the hood and roof go pale grey while the sides stay deep black, and the car’s shape shows through those reflections rather than through colour.

Rain is the other half of the picture. Environment Canada’s 1981–2010 normals have Abbotsford averaging 1,537.8 mm a year, well above Vancouver Airport’s 1,189 mm. On gloss black, dried rain and road spray show as spots and film long before they’d be noticed on silver or white, so expect to wash a black wrap here more often than a lighter one.

Keeping a gloss black wrap free of swirls

Rinse before you touch it, wash by hand, and never scrub. 3M’s maintenance FAQ singles out its high gloss films: dirt, dust and salt are hard enough to scratch the surface if pressed into it, so loose grit has to be flushed off with water first.

Light marks and scratches

Warm sunshine erases most fine scratches in 2080 on its own, according to 3M, and an installer can draw others out with a heat gun as long as the surface stays under 107 °C. Heat won’t lift a deep scratch; that panel needs fresh film.

Wax and polish

3M accepts a short list of waxes on smooth or gloss 2080, and its Finesse-it finishing polish for stubborn residue on glossy film, each tried on a hidden spot first. Avery’s North American care leaflet allows wax on its film if it contains no petroleum distillates.

Coatings

Both makers draw a line here. 3M doesn’t warrant 2080 with a coating on it, and Avery’s SW900 data sheet says protective coatings containing solvents or distillates void its warranty, so keep coatings off a black wrap you want covered.

Which cars suit a gloss black wrap?

In the shop’s view, big, upright vehicles whose shape reads well in reflections, and any car where black is the step toward a fully blacked-out look. The G-Class and Range Rover are obvious candidates, and gloss black film pairs naturally with a chrome delete on the trim.

You don’t have to wrap the whole car. A gloss black roof wrap on a white, silver or red car is a smaller job with a big change in look. If you’d rather the black stopped reflecting, satin black is the softer alternative.

How long is gloss black rated, and what does the shop’s warranty say?

Solid black gets the longest rating Avery gives, but the terms on paper differ by maker and from the shop’s. Brookswood Tint publishes five years for wrap film and calls it a manufacturer warranty.

Film Upright panels Horizontal panels
Avery solid black, Zone 1 12 years 3 years
Avery metallic black, Zone 1 5 years 2 years
3M 2080, all colours, in Canada 7 years 2 years

Avery’s data sheet sets those rows, and its durability bulletin places Canada in Zone 1. The 3M row comes from the Zone 2 column of its warranty card, the zone 3M’s map assigns to Canada. Ask the shop which of these terms you’ll actually receive for your film.

What happens when a black wrap comes off?

It peels away with heat, and the paint underneath is what was there before. One thing to know on partial jobs such as a black roof: 3M’s care and removal bulletin notes that a hot, high-output heat source can bring out a faint outline, which 3M calls a “shadow”, where film used to sit, which is why removal is done at a controlled temperature.

Avery excludes paint staining that only appears once cracked or faded film has been pulled off, so a tired black wrap should come off before it starts to break down. Whether a wrap can hurt paint at all is covered in does a vinyl wrap damage paint.

Booking a gloss black wrap in Langley

Ask for the paint to be looked at when you get the quote, since it decides how good gloss black will look. Tell the shop about the car, gloss or high gloss, and any respray history through the wrap quote form. A full colour change is three to five days in the shop, while a roof alone takes a day, two at most.

Questions about gloss black wrap

01Is high gloss black worth it over regular gloss black?

If your paint is smooth, it gives a more mirror-like surface: 3M claims 250% better reflected image quality for its high gloss colours than a typical premium cast wrap. On paint with heavy orange peel, it will show that texture more, not less.

02Does a gloss black wrap get swirl marks like black paint?

It can scratch, and 3M asks for extra care washing its high gloss films because grit pressed into the surface marks it. Most mild surface scratches on 2080 fade with warm sun or an installer's heat gun; deep ones mean replacing the film on that panel.

03Can I wrap just the roof in gloss black?

Yes. A roof is one of the shop's single-panel jobs and normally takes a day or two. According to the shop's service page, the single panel requested most often is a satin black roof over gloss paint, so look at both finishes before choosing.

04Is Avery's Obsidian Black different from its Gloss Black?

They are two separate solid films on Avery's chart, SW900-191-O and SW900-190-O, and both sit in Avery's black and white durability row. The difference is in the shade, so compare the swatches side by side.
