Does putting PPF on a new car void the factory warranty?
Nothing in the Canadian booklets we read says so. They exclude damage an accessory causes, which is a narrower thing than cancelling the warranty because an accessory is fitted.
Toyota Canada’s 2026 warranty supplement says its new vehicle limited warranty covers any part supplied by Toyota Canada “that is defective in material or workmanship, subject to the exclusions listed” in its warranty exceptions. Those exceptions include damage or failures resulting from “Modification, alteration or tampering, disconnection, including installation of non-Toyota Accessories.” Tesla’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Model S, X, 3 and Y, effective September 1, 2026, excludes “any damage directly or indirectly caused by, due to, or resulting from, the installation or use of non-genuine Tesla parts or accessories.”
Read plainly, both tie the exclusion to damage the accessory causes. Film on the hood has nothing to do with a transmission, a battery or a door module. If you want certainty for your own car, ask the dealer for its position in writing before the install.
What does a factory paint warranty actually cover?
Defects in the paint itself, for a set term, and not damage from the road. That’s why chips were never the carmaker’s problem, and why film is sold.
Toyota Canada warrants paint defects “for 36 months or 60,000 km, whichever occurs first,” covering “defects in materials or workmanship on all exterior body panels.” Its list of paint exceptions starts with blemishes caused by “stones, gravel, accident impact, industrial fallout or pollution, bird droppings, paint chips, chemicals.” Tesla lists “paint and glass stone chips” under normal wear its warranty doesn’t cover.
| What happens to the paint | Factory paint warranty | Where film fits |
|---|---|---|
| A stone chip on the hood | Excluded by Toyota and Tesla | This is what film is for, on the panels it covers |
| A bird dropping left to etch the paint | Excluded by Toyota | Film takes the hit; clean it off promptly |
| Clear coat that peels from a factory fault, within the term | The kind of defect the warranty is for | Film neither causes nor cures it |
| Paint lifted when film is taken off | A grey area; the carmaker may see it as caused by the film | 3M’s film warranty excludes “paint pull during film removal” |
That last row is the one to plan around, and it’s why removal is a job for a professional in a warm indoor bay. Does PPF damage paint when removed covers it in detail.
Does PPF change rust or corrosion coverage?
No, but the exclusions show why film helps there too. Carmakers don’t cover rust that starts at a stone chip.
Toyota Canada’s corrosion perforation warranty runs 60 months with unlimited kilometres, and it excludes perforation “due to external damages caused by stones, gravel accident or other forms of impact.” Tesla excludes corrosion “from the outside in, such as stone chips or scratches.” A chip that breaks through to metal is the owner’s to repair, which makes keeping stones off the front panels worth something beyond looks.
What if a paint defect shows up under the film?
Tell the dealer the panel is filmed, and expect them to want a clear look at the paint. That can mean taking the film off that panel so the defect can be inspected and repaired.
Keep the film invoice with the warranty booklet: it shows the install date, the film line and which panels were covered. If the paint is repaired under warranty, the shop prices new film for that panel once the repair is finished. LLumar suggests giving fresh paint about 30 days to outgas, so leave that gap after a respray.
Which warranty covers the film itself?
The film maker’s, through the shop that installed it. It covers the film, and it has its own exclusions, separate from anything the carmaker promises.
LLumar gives Platinum a 10-year limited warranty, with a footnote pointing owners to the installing dealer for the restrictions. The four defects the shop’s own terms name are yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling. LLumar’s PPF FAQ also spells out exclusions: lifting at the edges from pressure washers or automatic washes, problems on aftermarket or repaired paint, and carbon fibre, which LLumar doesn’t count as OEM paint.
Some carmakers sell film of their own. Tesla’s parts warranty lists Clear Protection Film at 10 years, but marks that coverage “only available in the United States.” How carmaker film compares with aftermarket film is set out in factory PPF vs aftermarket PPF, and dealer add-on packages in dealer paint protection packages vs PPF.
Protecting a car that’s still under warranty
Film it early, keep the paperwork, and tell the dealer it’s there. A new car’s factory paint is the surface LLumar designs for, and every chip it collects before the film goes on stays under the film. The timing question has its own answer for new cars.
Brookswood Tint’s front packages in LLumar Platinum are priced from $850 (partial) and $1,550 (full), and the shop’s warranty page explains how film claims work. Use the quote form for a price on your car, or browse every package under paint protection film.
