Which scratches does PPF actually stop?
The light, everyday kind that would otherwise mark the clear coat. Film puts a tough urethane layer with its own top coat between the scratch and the paint, so the mark lands on the film.
3M’s Pro Series bulletin lists scratches next to stone chips, bug damage, road tar and stains among the things its film is designed to protect paint from. LLumar’s PPF FAQ says its top coat shields the urethane from surface scratches, and the Platinum Gloss page adds that warmth from the engine or the sun helps swirls and minor scratches fade.
| Where the scratch comes from | What the film does | Package that covers that spot |
|---|---|---|
| Wash marks and swirls on the hood | Top coat takes them; heat helps them fade | Every package, the whole hood from Full Front |
| A bag, zipper or jacket brushing a front fender | Light marks stay in the top coat | Full Front and up |
| Branches along a narrow back road | Light marks on the front end and pillars | Front packages; Track Package adds A-pillars |
| Branches or brush along the doors | Same, if the doors are filmed | Full Vehicle only |
| A key dragged along the side | Can cut the film; see the next section | Full Vehicle only |
Can PPF stop someone keying your car?
Not reliably. A light, quick drag may only mark the film’s surface, but a key pressed hard cuts into the film and can go through it, and none of the makers we checked sells its film as vandal-proof.
The numbers explain why. 3M’s Pro Series film is 6.0 mils, about 0.15 mm, of polyurethane before the adhesive is counted. That layer is tough against grit and rubbing, but it isn’t armour, and a metal point with a person’s weight behind it is a very different thing from a wash mitt. LLumar’s self-healing promise is about “surface scratches”, and a key line that has opened the film isn’t one.
What film can change is the outcome. If the key cut the film but not the paint, replacing that panel’s film puts the car back where it was. If it went through to the paint, the panel needs paint repair before new film goes on. Which one you get depends on how hard the key was pressed, and nobody can promise you the first.
Which panels does each PPF package protect from scratches?
Only Full Vehicle covers the sides of the car. The other three packages are built around stone chips, so they stop at the front end, plus the pillars, part of the roof and the rockers on the Track Package.
| Package | Doors and rear quarters | Trunk, hatch or tailgate |
|---|---|---|
| Partial Front, from $850 | Not covered | Not covered |
| Full Front, from $1,550 | Not covered | Not covered |
| Track Package, from $1,900 | Not covered; rockers below the doors are | Not covered |
| Full Vehicle, from $4,000 | Covered | Covered |
If keying or side scratches are the worry, the full body PPF package is the only one that answers it. It films every painted surface and the headlights, and the car stays in the bay three to five days.
What happens to the film after a scratch?
Surface marks usually fade with warmth; cuts stay. You can tell which you have by warming the panel and looking again.
Park in the sun for an afternoon, or rinse the area with warm water, which is one of the heat sources LLumar names. A mark that’s gone was in the top coat. One that’s still there after warming has cut deeper than self-healing can reach, and the panel needs a look. How the healing works, and its limits, is explained in what self-healing PPF means.
A cut isn’t a film defect, so it isn’t a warranty claim. 3M’s warranty card, for example, excludes damage caused by misuse, accident or ordinary wear. A replacement piece is priced on the car, and whether a smaller repair is possible is covered in whether damaged PPF can be patched.
What should you do if your car gets keyed in BC?
Treat it as vandalism: report it to police first, then to ICBC if you carry Comprehensive coverage. Photograph the damage before anything is touched.
In BC: ICBC says “Vandalism claims are covered if you have ICBC Comprehensive coverage.” Outside Vancouver, it tells you to call the local police or RCMP, and to “write down the police file number” because you’ll need it when you report the claim. You pay your deductible to the repair shop when the work is done.
How the film on a damaged panel is handled is a question for ICBC, not something we can answer for them. Keep the film invoice, which shows which panels were covered and when, and ask your adjuster.
Protecting the panels that get scratched
Match the coverage to the damage you’re trying to prevent. Chips land on the nose, which the front packages handle from $850 upward. A key reaches the sides, and only Full Vehicle covers them, from $4,000 in LLumar Platinum, warranted by LLumar for 10 years.
Scratches already in the paint need correcting first, since clear film keeps whatever it covers; scratch removal explains what polishing can and can’t fix. A ceramic coating is a different product with different limits, laid out in whether ceramic coating prevents scratches or chips. When you’re ready, ask for a quote and say which panels worry you most.
