Why can the outside be washed straight away?
Because the water never meets the film. LLumar’s tint FAQ says auto tint is “typically” fitted to the inside surfaces, and that’s where Brookswood Tint applies it. Soap, rain and rinse water stay on the outside of the glass.
What can hurt new film is the glass moving, not the water. Lower a tinted window while the film is still wet behind it and the seal can drag on the film’s upper edge. So the only rule for a first-day wash is to keep every tinted window fully up. The reasons behind the 3 to 5 days are set out in when tinted windows can go down again.
When can you clean the inside of tinted windows?
After the film has cured, which the shop puts at 3 to 5 days. Until then, the slip solution used to position the film is still drying out from behind it, and light haze or small water pockets in that first week are normal. They clear on their own; a cloth won’t speed that up.
Once the cure is done, the shop’s routine for the inside is simple: soft microfibre, a cleaner without ammonia, and no scraper on the film, ever. In a cold or damp week, give it the full five days before the first wipe, and longer if haze is still visible. How the haze behaves, and when it isn’t normal, is covered in why new tint looks hazy.
A wash timeline for a newly tinted car
Day by day, from the moment you drive away:
| When | Outside of the car | Inside of the glass | Windows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup day | Wash if you like, any method | Leave alone | Keep closed |
| Days 1 to 5 | Wash if you like | Leave alone; let the heater clear any fog | Keep closed |
| End of the first week | As normal | First clean once the cure is done and haze has cleared | Back to normal use after the cure |
| From then on | As normal | Microfibre and ammonia-free cleaner, no blades | Normal use |
Do automatic, touchless and hand washes affect tint?
No, none of them reach film on the inside of the glass, so the choice of wash makes no difference to the tint. A brush tunnel, a touchless bay and a bucket and mitt all leave it untouched.
The precautions are about the car, not the wash. Close every window fully before you pull in, switch on the window lock so a passenger can’t drop one, and keep it on for the cure. Dealers and fleets returning freshly tinted units should pass the same note to whoever drives them first.
What if your car got tint plus PPF or a ceramic coating?
Then the longest wait wins. Window film can be washed around straight away, but paint protection film and ceramic coating have their own rules, and they apply to the whole outside of the car.
| Applied in the same visit | Wait before the first wash | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Window tint only | None for the outside | Any wash method |
| LLumar Platinum PPF | A week, per the shop | Hand or touchless wash, pressure nozzles kept off film edges, no brush washes |
| Graphene-ceramic coating | Keep dry for 24 hours after pickup | Follow the shop’s coating aftercare |
LLumar’s own PPF FAQ asks owners not to wash the car for the first three days, 72 hours, and discourages pressure washing and automatic car washes. The shop asks for a full week, so plan around seven days. If you’re having several jobs done together, the order and timing are covered in getting tint, PPF and coating at the same time.
What about interior detailing after new tint?
Wait for the cure, then tell the detailer the glass is filmed. The inside face of the glass is where the film lives, so the risks are interior ones: ammonia-based glass cleaners, razor blades used to lift stickers or residue, and hard edges dragged across the film. The shop’s rule is soft microfibre and an ammonia-free cleaner, and no scraping, ever.
If the car needs a full interior detail, it’s simpler to have it done before the tint appointment, so the glass is clean when the film goes on and nobody has to work around it for the first week. What else to sort out before drop-off is listed in preparing your car for a tint appointment.
Booking tint around your wash routine
Book the tint for a stretch when the windows can stay up for 3 to 5 days, and wash the car whenever you normally would. Most cars leave on the day they arrive, since a full sedan or SUV usually needs 2 to 4 hours, and both film and workmanship are covered for life.
For reference, the shop lists rear-glass tint in LLumar ATC at $220 and up for sports coupes, with sedans and pickups from $240 and full-size SUVs and wagons from $260. Front door film goes on only when a customer asks, and no shade of it is legal on a BC road. The full care routine for the months after is in the window tint aftercare guide. Pick a date through the tint booking request or call the shop at 604 534 6433.
