What does a self-healing top coat do?
It takes the light scratches so the film underneath stays clear. In its PPF FAQ, LLumar says its film has a proprietary top coat guarding the urethane beneath from surface scratches, and that most such scratches self-heal once heated, with sun, warm water and an engine-warmed panel given as examples.
On Platinum Gloss, one of the two films the shop fits, LLumar credits engine heat or sunlight with fading swirl marks and minor scratches. 3M describes the same idea from the installer’s side: its PPF guidelines call the film’s surface clear-coated, a layer that protects against environmental influences and mechanical stress. It belongs to the film, not to the car’s own clear coat, which doesn’t heal.
What are its limits?
It’s a claim about surface scratches only. LLumar’s wording is “the majority of surface scratches”, and nothing in it extends to a cut through the film or damage to the paint below.
Healing also needs heat, which is scarce on a cold, grey winter day. On LLumar’s list, warm water or a drive that warms the panels does the job the sun does in summer. Washing habits still matter too. On new film the shop asks for a week’s wait before any wash; from then on, only hand or touchless washing, never a pressure washer aimed at the film’s edge, and no brush washes at all. The PPF aftercare guide covers the routine.
Is the top coat the same on every film?
Every film in LLumar’s current PPF lineup is sold as self-healing, but the top coats carry different extras:
| LLumar film | Top coat as LLumar describes it | Warranty |
|---|---|---|
| Platinum Gloss | Self-healing, with HydroGard “water-repellent barrier” | 10-year limited |
| Platinum Matte | Self-healing; HydroGard “hydrophobic topcoat” | 10-year limited |
| Valor | Self-healing, Tetrashield “super hydrophobic” finish | 12-year limited |
The water-repellent side of those top coats is explained on hydrophobic, and the shop’s film is profiled on LLumar Platinum PPF.
Getting self-healing film at Brookswood Tint
The shop fits LLumar Platinum in gloss or matte. LLumar backs it for 10 years under a limited warranty, and the shop says that covers yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling. Coverage sets the price: a Partial Front from $850 takes in the whole bumper but only some of the hood and fenders, plus lights and mirrors; going to $1,550 for a Full Front puts film on all of the hood and both fenders; the $1,900 Track Package adds partial roof, A-pillars and rockers; and a Full Vehicle starts at $4,000. Bigger vehicles, trickier panels and paint that needs prep first can all push the final figure up. See paint protection film for what each package covers.
