Which STEK shades can go on an M3?
The same four STEK films the shop offers for any car, each one shaped to its lens with heat and trimmed by hand:
- 50% smoke. A light darkening, and the shop’s suggestion where a housing holds an amber signal or the car is driven daily.
- 30% smoke. A bold, blacked-out look, aimed at taillights and fog lights.
- Yellow. Turns the light yellow, for front lamps.
- Clear. Protects the lens without changing how it looks.
Deep-set housings take longer than the usual two to three hours for a pair. The shop’s published terms give STEK film 7 years against yellowing, cracking and peeling, and STEK light film describes the product.
How did BMW light the 2021 to 2024 M3?
With LED at both ends and two optional upgrades at the front. BMW Canada’s 2020 launch release lists full-LED headlights as standard, with U-shaped fibre-optic light guides for the daytime driving lights.
- Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight. Optional, identified by blue inlays along the top edge of each unit, with cornering light and adaptive cornering functions.
- Individual Shadowline Headlights. Optional, with darkened inlays along the upper edges.
- Taillights. Slim, darkened clusters with L-shaped LED lights that extend into the rear fenders.
That last point matters for film. Because each cluster runs out into the fender, in the shop’s view the lens is a longer, more curved piece to heat-form than a flat lamp, and its housing is already dark before any smoke goes on.
What changed on the 2025 M3’s headlights?
BMW redesigned them for cars built from July 2024. According to the 2025 release, the new LED headlights put the low and high beam in a single module, and “two sculpted, subtly arrow-shaped vertical LED units in each module serve as both daytime driving lights and turn signal indicators”.
BMW also offers Shadowline Lights with dark inner accents as an option, which is its own route to a darker front. Film over a 2025 headlight darkens the beams, the daytime lights and the turn signals together.
Why do some M3s already show yellow lights?
Because BMW builds them that way on the CS models. The M3 CS has angular daytime light elements that glow yellow instead of white, and the 2027 CS Handschalter keeps them, lit yellow in the start-up light sequence and while driving with the low or high beams on.
That’s a factory lamp design. Yellow film is something else: a layer over the whole lens that changes the colour of every light behind it, and it carries the inspection risk below.
Will an M3 with tinted lamps pass a BC inspection?
Not reliably. BC’s 2025 inspection manual treats a covered lens as a defect: Section 6, item 1.0(a), flags a lens “covered in any manner” and, separately, one that “reduces transmission of light”. So smoke or yellow film can fail or bring a ticket, and even clear film can be questioned.
Are tinted headlights legal in BC deals with the front lamps, and smoked taillights in BC with the rear. The shop raises this before fitting smoke; if an inspection comes up, the film lifts off.
