Who makes satin battleship grey wrap film?
3M does. It sells the colour as Satin Battleship Gray, code 2080-S51, in its 2080 wrap film line, and it has been a fixture of that range for years.
The colour turns up in every 3M colour list checked for this page: the 2018 palette, the 2023 brochure and a 2025 swatch poster printed for the Dutch market. In all three it appears without the asterisk 3M uses to flag metallic, chrome or pearl colours. That marks S51 as a solid colour, with no flake to sparkle.
What does 3M’s warranty cover on 2080-S51 in Canada?
Seven years upright, two years flat. 3M’s 2080 warranty card sets those terms for Zone 2, and its zone map puts Canada in that zone. The card’s other terms:
- Covered: flaws in the material or its manufacture, with yellowing, bubbling and cracking named.
- Not covered: damage from misuse, accidents or poor application, normal wear, rock and debris dents, and paint that comes away as the film is peeled off.
- Who holds it: only the first consumer who bought it; it can’t be transferred.
- To claim: start with your installer, and show the card and the original invoice.
The shop’s own published figure is five years, described as a manufacturer warranty on vinyl. It doesn’t match 3M’s numbers, so ask Brookswood Tint which term applies to your wrap. How those ratings play out in BC is on how long a wrap lasts in BC.
Is there an Avery Dennison battleship grey?
Not by that name. Avery’s North American overview of Supreme Wrapping Film lists one solid satin grey and several satin metallic greys, and none of them is sold as a match for the 3M colour.
| Avery film | Code | Type | Zone 1 rating, vertical / horizontal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Satin Grey | SW900-833-O | Solid satin | 10 / 2 years |
| Satin Metallic Spy Grey | SW900-828-M | Satin metallic | 5 / 2 years |
| Satin Metallic Dark Grey | SW900-854-M | Satin metallic | 5 / 2 years |
| Satin Metallic Black Rock Grey | SW900-823-M | Satin metallic | 5 / 2 years |
The ratings come from Avery’s SW900 data sheet, and Canada sits in Avery’s Zone 1 under its Instructional Bulletin 1.30. If you want the battleship look without flake, Satin Grey is the Avery swatch to hold beside S51.
What does a solid satin grey look like on a cloudy day?
The shop’s view: satin handles flat light well. A gloss grey mirrors the dull sky, and a matte grey can look like bare primer, while a satin keeps a soft highlight running along each crease and wheel arch.
Avery’s data sheet pins satin at 20 to 30 gloss units, read at a 60 degree angle, and 3M’s 2080 product bulletin publishes no gloss reading, so the comparison has to be made by eye. With no flake, Battleship Gray won’t change much between a bright day and a dull one, and the shop sees that steadiness as its main strength in a wet climate.
Which cars suit Satin Battleship Gray?
Cars with crisp body lines, because the satin sheen picks out every fold. In the shop’s view it suits modern sports sedans, hot hatches and coupes, and it gives trucks and SUVs a utilitarian look without going flat.
Two neighbouring colours are worth a swatch beside it: satin dark grey, a satin sold as a dark shade, and Nardo grey, matched from gloss greys.
How do you look after a satin 3M wrap?
Wash gently, never scrub, and keep anything abrasive away from it. 3M’s care guide and 2080 product bulletin set out a simple routine:
- Leave the wrap unwashed for the first 72 hours.
- Hand wash where you can; if you need a car wash, pick a touchless one, since brushes can dull and scratch the film and lift its edges.
- Use a wet, non-abrasive cleaner with no solvents and a pH between 3 and 11, tried on a small area first.
- Wipe fuel spills off straight away, and soften tree sap by soaking it in hot, soapy water for a few minutes.
- Garage the car, shade it or cover it where possible, and keep it clear of shrubs and branches.
3M’s maintenance FAQ lists the waxes it accepts under the heading of smooth or gloss films, so ask the shop before putting any wax on a satin. A ceramic coating is out: 3M excludes coatings from its warranty and won’t warrant 2080 that’s been coated.
Removing Satin Battleship Gray later
3M says 2080 can be removed throughout its warranty period with heat, chemicals or both, and that factory paint shouldn’t be damaged when the film is applied and removed to its instructions. Any adhesive left behind is cleaned off afterwards. The shop’s steps are on wrap removal.
