Paint protection film pricing

Why Is PPF So Expensive?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 4 min read

The short answer

Because the price pays for days of skilled labour as well as the film. A PPF job is one to five days of prep and hand fitting on top of the film: paint decontaminated and, if needed, corrected, each panel's piece cut from a template for your exact car, then fitted and wrapped around the edges. LLumar itself says its dealers set the price because installation labour is part of it. At Brookswood Tint, LLumar Platinum starts at $850 for a Partial Front and $1,550 for a Full Front.

Labour
1 to 5 days of prep and fitting
Partial Front
From $850, usually 1 day
Full Front
From $1,550, 1 to 2 days
Full Vehicle
From $4,000, 3 to 5 days
Film warranty
LLumar 10-year limited

What are you paying for in a PPF price?

Time in the bay as well as the roll of film. The material is engineered and warranted, and on top of it come the hours spent getting paint ready and fitting film to it by hand. LLumar’s own PPF FAQ says pricing “is determined by the LLumar dealers who professionally install the products”, because installation labour is part of the total.

What goes into the job What it involves at Brookswood Tint
Paint prep Every panel decontaminated; corrected first if it needs it, with paint thickness measured before polishing
Pattern cutting Pieces cut from software templates for your year, make and model
Fitting Each piece laid on wet, worked into curves and creases, and squeegeed out by hand
Edges Wrapped around panel edges where the panel allows; any relief cut on a bumper shown to you first
The film LLumar Platinum, gloss or matte, with a self-healing top coat
Warranty LLumar’s 10-year manufacturer’s limited warranty
Shop time From about a day for a Partial Front to 3–5 days for a Full Vehicle

Why is PPF so much more than window tint?

Because film on paint is a different job from film on glass. A full window tint on a sedan or SUV typically takes two to four hours, on the inside of the glass, and the rear-glass packages start at $220 to $260. PPF goes on the outside of painted panels that have to be prepped first, is shaped over bumpers, vents and creases, and takes from a day to five days.

Window tint Paint protection film
Surface Inside face of the glass Outside of painted panels
Prep Clean glass Decontamination, correction if needed
Typical time 2–4 hours for a full tint 1 day to 3–5 days, by package
Starting price $220 for coupe rear glass $850 for a Partial Front
Warranty LLumar lifetime limited, plus the shop’s workmanship warranty LLumar 10-year limited

What makes the film itself cost more than ordinary clear film?

It’s built to take hits and repair light marks. Eastman, the company behind LLumar, describes its urethane paint protection film as an “elastic and transparent urethane film” meant to serve as a “removable and sacrificial surface protectant” against road debris. LLumar adds a top coat to Platinum that self-heals swirl marks and minor scratches with heat from the engine or the sun, and HydroGard water repellency that resists stains.

Film lines from one maker can carry different warranties, from 5 to 12 years in LLumar’s own range, and that changes the price as well. How those lines compare, and what each one costs at the shop, is on PPF cost.

Why does each package step up in price so steeply?

Because each step adds both panels and harder fitting. A Partial Front covers the bumper and the leading part of the hood and fenders. A Full Front takes the whole hood and fenders edge to edge, which means larger pieces and more edges to wrap. A Full Vehicle covers every painted surface, including doors, quarters, roof and rear bumper.

Package From Time in the shop
Partial Front $850 Usually 1 day
Full Front $1,550 1–2 days
Track Package $1,900 1–2 days
Full Vehicle $4,000 3–5 days

Final prices depend on the car’s size, how complex its panels are and the paint condition, so a large SUV with deep vents quotes above a compact car with smooth panels.

Is there a cheaper way to protect paint from chips?

Yes, by covering less, not by buying a weaker product. The chip zone is the front of the car, and speed is what makes a stone hurt: TranBC notes that going from 80 to 110 km/h almost doubles the impact energy of a flying rock. The Partial Front at $850 puts film on what the shop calls the high-impact zone: what the car in front throws back.

The other routes cost less and do less. A ceramic coating adds gloss and easier washing but doesn’t stop a chip. DIY kits save the labour and hand it to you; the trade-off is set out in DIY PPF kit vs professional PPF. Dealer add-on packages are compared in dealer protection packages vs PPF.

How do you get a PPF price that makes sense for your car?

Ask for a quote that shows where the money goes. A useful one names the film, lists every panel, says whether correction is included and states the warranty; the checklist is in what a PPF quote should include, and the case for and against film is in is PPF worth it.

Send your year, make, model and the package you’re considering through the PPF quote request, or text 604 534 6433. Quotes and installs happen at the Langley Bypass shop, Unit 312 at number 20560, from 9:00 to 17:00 every day except Sunday.

Related questions

01Why is full-body PPF more than two and a half times the price of a full front?

Because it covers every painted surface instead of the front end, and it keeps the car in the shop for 3 to 5 days instead of 1 to 2. At Brookswood Tint that's $4,000 against $1,550 as starting prices.

02Does a higher PPF quote always mean a better job?

No. Two quotes can differ on film line, panel list, edge work and warranty, so line them up item by item before comparing the totals.

03Why does a PPF install take a whole day or more?

Every panel is cleaned and checked, each piece is fitted wet, worked into curves and wrapped around edges by hand. A Partial Front is normally finished in a day.

04Is there a cheaper way to stop rock chips?

Covering less of the car is the honest saving: the Partial Front protects the bumper, the leading edges of the hood and fenders, the headlights and the mirrors. A ceramic coating costs less but doesn't stop chips.
