What on a Defender counts as chrome?
Mostly lettering, the grille bar, skid plates and silver-finish details, not plated chrome. JLR’s 2027 model-year press kit lists how each version is finished, and the bright or light pieces change with the trim:
| Defender version | What JLR says it wears | Where black vinyl could go |
|---|---|---|
| S and X-Dynamic (core range) | Bumper surfaces in Silicon Silver or Carpathian Grey Satin; Defender script on the bonnet | Hood script, tail door lettering, silver bumper sections |
| X-Dynamic SE and HSE, in addition | Narvik Black door and wheel arch cladding and skid plates | Script, lettering, grille bar |
| X | Gloss Black contrast bonnet and claddings; Narvik Black bumpers, skid plates and other details | Lettering and any remaining light trim |
| 130 (all versions) | Ceres Silver detailing on the bonnet louvres and side fenders | Louvres, fender detailing, lettering |
| V8 | Shadow Atlas Matte bumpers and exterior detailing | Script and badging, for a gloss black look |
The same kit says the bonnet script “complements a dark oval badge in the grille”, so on a current Defender the Land Rover oval is already dark. That leaves the words and the silver accents as the pieces that change the look most. How small badges and letters are handled is on the badge blackout page.
How does vinyl compare with Land Rover’s black packs?
It reaches a similar result later, and it isn’t tied to a trim. Land Rover Canada lists a Black Exterior Package with “Narvik Black front and rear skid pan, and Gloss Black hood and tailgate lettering” (options and accessories).
JLR’s press kit adds an Extended Black Pack for the X, X-Dynamic SE and HSE and V8: front and rear skid plates, grille bar, bonnet chequer finisher and badging in Gloss Black, along with the lower body cladding and wheel arches. That’s a useful checklist even if you skip the option. Vinyl covers the same parts on a Defender you already own, including an S, and because cast film comes off with heat, the factory finish is still there at resale or lease return. The removal side is covered under whether a chrome delete is reversible.
Gloss black vinyl is the nearer match to the factory’s darker parts. JLR describes Narvik Black as “deep and dark with a gloss finish as standard”, so satin black reads as a deliberate contrast next to it.
What changes on a Defender 130 or OCTA?
The 130 has more silver to cover and the OCTA has less. JLR fits Ceres Silver detailing to the bonnet louvres and side fenders of every Defender 130, alongside Narvik Black roof rails and available Bright Silver wheels. On a 130, those louvres and fender pieces are the obvious first items on a delete quote.
The OCTA takes a different route. JLR finishes its bumpers, bonnet vent inserts and fender vent surrounds in Textured Graphite, with a two-piece bonnet script carrying a Phosphor Bronze outer finish. The OCTA Black goes further, with up to 30 exterior elements blacked out, and Land Rover Canada describes it as a “Narvik Black finish with exclusive gloss black exterior elements” (Defender OCTA). On an OCTA Black, vinyl has very little left to do.
Which Defender trim comes off, and what stays bare?
Small pieces come off when they can be refitted cleanly; anything clipped or taped is checked first. The C-pillar panel on a five-door Defender is a good example. Land Rover’s SSM 74962 shows the C-pillar exterior finisher held with double-sided tape plus clips, and warns technicians not to damage either when it’s removed. On the OCTA, JLR offers the C-pillar signature graphic in Gloss Black, and black vinyl recreates that look in the same area on other Defenders.
Claddings are a different matter. SSM 74762 treats the lantern clips that hold them as one-time use, so if one has to come off, the quote should include new clips. Lamp lenses stay bare: a covered lamp can fail a BC inspection, and smoking lights is a separate job.
How do you book a Defender chrome delete in Langley?
Send the year, body length (90, 110 or 130), the trim and any factory pack, with photos of the hood script, tail door lettering, grille, skid plates and C-pillar panels. Mention your choice of gloss or satin.
Your quote lists each part getting film, anything removed for the job and anything left as it is. Under the shop’s published terms, the film itself carries five years of warranty. Request a price on the Defender chrome delete form; the shop’s number is 604 534 6433. If the body colour is changing too, plan it alongside a Defender wrap so the trim and panels are done in one visit.
