How does dealer tint compare with going to a tint shop?
The real trade is convenience against choice. Dealer tint arrives done with the car, while a tint shop asks for a separate visit and gives you the say over film, shade and who does the work.
| Dealer tint | Tint shop | |
|---|---|---|
| When it happens | Before you take delivery | When you book, before or after delivery |
| Who fits the film | Ask: the dealer’s own staff or an outside shop | The shop’s own installers |
| Film and shade | What the dealer offers; get the line and shade in writing | You choose from the shop’s lines and samples |
| Price | A line on the sales agreement, open to negotiation | Starting prices published at this shop |
| Warranty questions | Through the dealership, then the installer | Straight to the installer |
| Front side windows | Must be film-free on a car sold in BC | Not road-legal in BC; fitted only on request once the risk is explained |
| Windows down | Stay up for 3 to 5 days | Stay up for 3 to 5 days |
Neither route makes the work good or bad by itself. What the comparison shows is which questions to ask, because on the dealer route the answers aren’t in front of you unless you ask.
Who actually installs dealer tint?
It depends on the dealership, which is exactly why you should ask. The film may go on in the dealer’s own shop or at an outside tint shop the dealer books units into, and the answer tells you whose work you’re buying.
Outside shops do take this work. Brookswood Tint is one of them: a member of RevScene, the Lower Mainland car forum, once mentioned dealers sending new cars here, and the shop’s arrangements for dealers are described on dealership services.
The installer matters most when something goes wrong. LLumar’s tint FAQ calls its film cover a “lifetime limited warranty” and points buyers to the dealer for the details. In LLumar’s wording, the dealer is the authorized film dealer that did the install, not the dealership that sold you the car. Get the installer’s name, the film line and the shade on your paperwork, and check the installer on LLumar’s dealer locator under “Automotive Tint”.
What do BC’s dealer rules mean for a tint add-on?
Tint offered at the sales desk is an add-on, and BC’s rules for add-ons apply: it needs your approval, it belongs on the agreement with its price, and it can be negotiated.
In BC: the Vehicle Sales Authority’s Transaction Tips require the written agreement to itemize any equipment or accessories added to the vehicle, with prices, say that everything except taxes is open to negotiation, and confirm there’s no cooling-off period on a purchase.
The same page says you’ll be offered products such as protection packages and that they can only be charged with your approval. If a new car on the lot already has film on it, the VSA’s Things to Know Before You Go says the advertised total on a new vehicle has to include accessories already physically attached to it. Ask whether the tint is already in the price you saw or is being added on top. Decide on tint before you sign, since there’s no undo afterwards.
Can a BC dealer tint the front side windows?
No. The two front side windows can’t legally carry film of any shade in BC, and a dealer isn’t allowed to sell a car that breaks the province’s vehicle regulations.
MVAR s. 7.05(8) confines film to three places: the uppermost 75 mm of the windshield, side glass behind the driver’s seat, and a back window on a car fitted with outside mirrors left and right. Clear and near-clear film count exactly the same. Motor Vehicle Act s. 222 means a vehicle that falls short of the Act or its regulations can’t be sold or offered for sale. And at a provincial inspection, item 13d of the inspection manual in force since 2025 rejects aftermarket film on side windows ahead of the driver’s seatback. The dealer side of this is unpacked in can a BC dealer sell a car with illegal tint.
The driver carries the risk after the sale. According to Mission RCMP, a tint ticket is typically $109, and police can also hand out a Notice & Order, which obliges the owner to remove the film and get the car through an inspection. The shop will still fit front-door film for a customer who asks, but only after making plain that it breaks BC law and what may follow.
What should you ask before saying yes to dealer tint?
Ask enough to know exactly what film is going on, who is fitting it, and what it costs on its own. These eight questions cover it.
- What brand and line of film is it, and what shade?
- What does that shade actually let through? Film names carry a product code, not a measured value: LLumar’s spec sheet shows ATC 35 passing 38% of visible light on its test glass.
- Which windows are included? In BC, film is legal only on glass behind the driver, plus a band no deeper than 75 mm along the windshield’s top edge.
- Does the car already have factory privacy glass? Film darkness multiplies with it: 20% film on 20% glass lets through about 4%.
- Who installs it, and where?
- Is it cut on a plotter or trimmed on the car?
- What warranty comes with it, in writing, and who honours it?
- What does the tint cost as its own line on the agreement?
If the car arrives with tint already on, add a ninth: when was it done? Freshly tinted windows should stay up for three to five days, so a car tinted the day before delivery needs that note on the dash. Factory privacy glass and aftermarket film are compared on window tint vs factory privacy glass.
What does a tint shop let you choose that a dealer add-on may not?
At a shop, the film line and shade are your choice, made with samples on the glass and the spec sheet in hand. At Brookswood Tint, each piece is cut by computer plotter from a pattern for your exact car, which keeps knives off the glass and the trim.
| LLumar film | What it is | Total solar energy rejected (spec sheet) | Shades the shop lists |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATC | Dyed, colour-stable; the film behind the starting prices | 28 to 44% | 5, 15, 35, 50% |
| IRX | Nano-ceramic that targets infrared; an upgrade | 50 to 62% | 5, 15, 35, 50% |
| AIR | Near-clear ceramic; an upgrade | 43% (AIR 80), 30% (AIR 90) | 70, 80, 90% |
All three block more than 99% of UV on LLumar’s sheet; its figures are measured on single-pane clear glass, and results on a real car vary. Film defects fall under LLumar’s lifetime limited warranty, and workmanship under the shop’s own lifetime cover. How shops price differently is covered in why tint prices vary between shops.
Dealer tint or a tint shop: which should you choose?
Choose dealer tint when convenience wins and you can get the film, shade, installer and price in writing. Choose a shop when you want to pick those yourself.
Dealer tint suits you if
- You want the car handed over finished, with no second appointment.
- The dealer names the film line, shade and installer, and puts them on the agreement.
- The price as a separate line holds up against a shop quote.
A tint shop suits you if
- You want to choose between dyed, ceramic and clear ceramic film yourself.
- You’d like to see shade samples on the glass before deciding.
- You want to deal with the installer directly if anything comes up later.
- You’d rather keep the tint off the sales agreement altogether.
Where Brookswood Tint stands on dealer tint
We tint for dealers as well as for drivers, so this isn’t a case against dealerships. Our advice is the same either way: know the film, know the installer, and keep the front side windows clear on any car sold in BC. A fuller checklist for comparing installers is in choosing a tint or PPF shop.
How do you book tint after you pick up the car?
Pick any day after delivery that suits you. A full sedan or SUV is normally a two-to-four-hour visit, and most cars go home the same day.
| Body style (LLumar ATC) | Starting price | What gets tinted |
|---|---|---|
| Sports coupe | $220 | Both rear quarter windows and the back window |
| Sedan or pickup | $240 | Rear door glass, any rear quarters, and the back window or slider |
| Full-size SUV or wagon | $260 | Rear door glass, quarters, extended side windows, hatch |
Ceramic IRX or near-clear AIR costs more and is priced per package. Tell the shop your car and which windows you have in mind on the tint quote form, or send the same details by text to 604 534 6433, and see window tint pricing for every package. Brookswood Tint is at Unit 312, 20560 Langley Bypass, open Monday to Saturday.
