What Is Calendered Vinyl?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Calendered vinyl is PVC graphic film made for flat or gently curved surfaces and short- to medium-term jobs: lettering, decals, signs and window graphics. Makers sell it on value, but it conforms less than cast vinyl and carries shorter outdoor ratings, so it isn't the film for a full colour change wrap.

What it is
PVC film for flat, shorter-term graphics
Typical jobs
Lettering, decals, signs, window graphics
Example rating
ORACAL 651, up to 6 years vertical
Not sold for
Full wraps over deep curves and recesses
Shop's wrap film
Cast only, from 3M and Avery Dennison

What is calendered vinyl used for?

Graphics on flat or mildly curved surfaces that don’t need a wrap’s lifespan. Avery Dennison sells its intermediate calendered printable films as “medium term durability films for flat applications” (Avery Dennison), and its high-performance calendered line for “slightly curved surfaces and moderate durability”.

ORAFOL’s two best-known calendered films show the range:

Film ORAFOL’s class Thickness Rated life Adhesive
ORACAL 651 Intermediate calendered 2.5 mil Up to 6 years, vertical, most colours Permanent, solvent-based
ORACAL 631 Short-term calendered 3 mil Up to 3 years Removable, water-based

ORAFOL lists flat automotive surfaces, vehicle graphics, signs and window graphics among 651’s uses (ORACAL 651), and places 631 at indoor and short-term outdoor work (ORAFOL, 651 vs 631).

How does calendered vinyl differ from cast vinyl?

It’s made to lie flat, not to be stretched into a recess and stay there. The makers draw that line themselves.

Avery describes its cast printable films as having “superior conformability and maximum durability for substrates with curves and recesses” (Avery Dennison Supercast), while its calendered films are aimed at flat or slightly curved work. ORAFOL tells buyers of 651 who need “enhanced conformability, or longer-term durability” to step up to its cast 751 or 951 films, and when it praises 651’s dimensional stability, it does so by saying it rivals cast plotter films. Its European data for 651 allows up to 0.4 mm of shrinkage along the roll when bonded to steel (ORAFOL Europe). The grade used for full wraps is defined under cast vinyl.

Where does calendered vinyl run into BC rules?

On the glass. BC’s window rule applies to any material on a window, so lettering and window graphics fall under it just as tint does. MVAR s. 7.05(8) covers any material on a window that lowers the light getting through, and permits it in just three areas: a 75 mm band at the windshield’s top edge, any side window positioned behind the driver, and the rear window, provided mirrors are mounted outside on both sides (MVAR s. 7.05).

So a decal on the front door glass sits under the same section as front-window tint, and s. 7.05(2) separately bars stickers or other material that unduly obstruct the driver’s view. Lettering on painted panels isn’t touched by the window rule at all. Removal season matters too: 3M notes that film turns brittle in the cold and recommends removing it above 10 °C (3M Instruction Bulletin 6.5).

Does Brookswood Tint use calendered vinyl?

Not for wraps or chrome deletes, which the shop does in 3M and Avery Dennison cast film only. If you’re planning lettering, a logo or a short-term graphic, mention it in your quote request and ask which film it would be cut from.

Business graphics are covered under commercial wraps and design-led graphics under livery wraps. Printed graphics often get a protective clear layer, explained under overlaminate. Start with the vinyl wrap quote form and include photos of the vehicle and the design you have in mind.

Questions about calendered vinyl

01Is calendered vinyl bad for wrapping a car?

It's the wrong grade for a full colour change rather than a bad film. Makers rate it for flat or slightly curved surfaces and shorter outdoor lives, while bumpers, mirrors and deep body lines call for cast film.

02Does calendered vinyl come off cleanly?

That depends on its adhesive. ORAFOL puts a permanent adhesive on 651 and a removable one on 631, which it suggests for temporary jobs. 3M adds that cold film turns brittle and breaks up, so removal goes better above 10 °C.

03How long does calendered vinyl last outdoors?

ORAFOL rates 651 at up to 6 years on vertical surfaces for most colours, with metallics lower, and its short-term 631 at up to 3 years. Those ratings assume upright surfaces, not hoods or roofs.
