What Is Cast Vinyl?

Brookswood Tint Shop · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Cast vinyl is the grade of PVC wrap film made to be warmed, stretched over curves and into recesses, and hold that shape outdoors for years. 3M's 2080 and Avery Dennison's SW900, the two film lines Brookswood Tint wraps with, are both cast, unlike the less conformable calendered vinyl sold mainly for flat graphics.

What makes a vinyl film “cast”?

Cast is a construction class, and it predicts how a film behaves on a car. Makers sort their graphic films by it: 3M’s removal bulletin lists three physical types of film, cast, calendered and reflective (3M Instruction Bulletin 6.5).

What the cast class buys you is conformability and outdoor life. ORAFOL describes its 970RA wrapping film as made for long-term, complete wraps in solid colours, conforming over curved surfaces, rivets and corrugations, and says it needs no overlaminate (ORAFOL 970RA). The value grade, calendered vinyl, is pitched at flatter, shorter jobs.

How do wrap makers describe their cast films?

As films for full coverage of curved bodywork, with stretch and stability figures to match. These are the makers’ own numbers:

Film Maker’s description Face thickness Behaviour on curves
3M 2080 Multi-layer cast film for full colour, accent and partial wraps 3.5 mil on 2080-M12 Not cold-stretch capable; designed to be conformed with heat
Avery Dennison SW900 Premium quality cast film 3.2 to 4.7 mil, by colour 150% elongation at break (120% for metallics); dimensional stability under 0.010 in
ORAFOL 970RA Premium wrapping cast 4.25 mil Conforms over curves, rivets and corrugations

Thickness doesn’t define the class, and more isn’t always better: Avery warns that its faces of 4 mil and up may conform less easily. What cast films share is that they’re designed to be softened, shaped and left in place. 3M’s colour change bulletin finishes that process with a hotter pass over stretched areas, defined under post-heating.

Why does cast film matter for BC drivers?

A wrap here has to last through wet winters and salty roads, then come off cleanly when the lease or the colour runs out. Cast film is the grade the makers back for that kind of life.

  • Install temperature. 3M wants 18 to 24 °C to apply 2080 (3M 2080 bulletin); Avery’s minimum for SW900 is 10 °C on flat or simple curves, rising to 16 °C on complex ones (Avery SW900 data sheet). Through a Langley winter, that means a heated bay.
  • Removal. 3M says heat, chemicals or both will take 2080 off most surfaces at any point in its warranty period; Avery rates SW900 removable for its durability period. Neither maker stands behind removal from paint in poor condition, which is why the paint is checked before film goes on.
  • Outdoor life. 3M offers up to eight years on vertical surfaces, varying by warranty zone. The shop publishes its own 5-year term on the vinyl.

Where cast vinyl shows up at Brookswood Tint

Every wrap and chrome delete the shop quotes uses cast film from 3M or Avery Dennison. Its chrome delete service puts it as “cast vinyl only”, chosen because cast film follows compound curves and trim edges without lifting.

That covers a full colour change wrap, booked for three to five days, along with roof and partial wraps and chrome delete on trim. Each job is priced per vehicle. The two brands are compared film for film in 3M 2080 vs Avery SW900, and you can send your car and colour through the vinyl wrap quote form.

Questions about cast vinyl

01Is cast vinyl always thicker than calendered vinyl?

No. ORAFOL's own range shows it: its cast 951 film is 2 mil and its calendered 651 is 2.5 mil, while 3M's cast 2080 has a 3.5 mil face. Construction, not thickness, separates the two.

02Does a solid-colour cast wrap need a clear overlaminate on top?

Usually not. ORAFOL says its 970RA wrapping film doesn't require one, and 3M warns that adding an overlaminate makes 2080 stiffer and harder to install. Laminates belong on printed graphics.

03Can cast vinyl be applied in a cold garage?

Not within the makers' limits on a Langley winter day. 3M lists 18 to 24 °C for applying 2080, and Avery wants at least 16 °C for SW900 on complex curves, so the car and film need to be warm.
