What does a wrapped edge look like?
Mostly, it doesn’t look like anything. With the film folded over the lip of the hood, door or fender, its cut end sits on the underside where you’d only find it with the panel open, and the face of the panel shows no line at all.
The alternative is an edge that stops on the face of the panel a few millimetres short of the gap, which leaves a fine visible border. Some edges can’t be wrapped. A partial front ends partway across the hood, so there’s no panel edge to fold around there; how that line compares with full coverage is in partial vs full front PPF.
How are edges wrapped and kept down?
The film is cut with enough extra material to reach around the edge, then the adhesive along that fold is locked down so it holds against the curve. 3M’s PPF installation guidelines set out the finishing steps:
- Flush the slip solution out from under the edges and hold them down so the adhesive grabs.
- Spray the edges with tack solution.
- Wipe down, dry and inspect, then allow 15 minutes before pressing on the film.
- Heat-set every edge with a heat gun at about 82 °C (180 °F).
That last step is related to what vinyl installers call post-heating.
Wrapped edges and a wet BC winter
Edges are where film lets go, and wet weather means frequent washing: Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Abbotsford normals count 179.5 days with precipitation a year. LLumar’s PPF FAQ says pressure washers and automatic washes can cause lifting, especially around the film’s edges, and that this isn’t covered by its limited warranty. A cut end tucked inside the panel is out of the direct line of a spray wand.
3M is specific about wand technique: a 40-degree or wider spray, no more than 80 bar, at least 30 cm away, and never aimed at 0 to 60 degrees to an edge. The shop’s own advice is simpler: hand or touchless washes, and pressure nozzles kept off the edges. More is in how to wash a car with PPF.
Where wrapped edges come up at Brookswood Tint
On every LLumar Platinum install. The pieces come from a computer template for that model, and the shop folds the film around every edge whose shape permits it. Where a bumper leaves no choice but a relief cut, the shop marks the spot for you before installation begins.
Full Front, from $1,550, covers whole panels, so its edges can sit at the panel gaps. What still shows from normal distance is covered in can you see paint protection film?, and the reasons film has seams at all in why PPF has seams.
