How the builder picks a package

It finds the smallest package that includes every panel you ticked. The packages build on each other: Full Front is Partial Front with the hood and fenders taken to their edges; Track Package adds the A-pillars, the front of the roof and the rocker panels; Full Vehicle covers every painted surface. Tick a door or the rear bumper and the answer jumps to Full Vehicle, because no smaller package includes them.

Which panels actually take the hits

Stones come off the road ahead and off your own front tires. The bumper and the leading edge of the hood take most of them, which is why Partial Front covers those first. TranBC says winter abrasive on main highways can be up to 9.5 mm and that going from 80 to 110 km/h "will almost double the impact energy" (TranBC). The rocker panels behind the front wheels catch grit thrown up by your own tires; the Track Package adds them, along with the A-pillars and the front of the roof. The rock chip answer covers what film does and doesn't stop.

Partial or full: the edge you can see

Partial Front stops the film partway up the hood and fenders, which leaves a line you can spot up close on dark or metallic paint. Full Front runs the film to the panel edges and wraps it where the panel allows, so there's no line across the middle. Full Front starts at $1,550, against $850 for Partial Front. The partial versus full front comparison goes through it panel by panel.

When Full Vehicle makes sense

Full Vehicle is for paint you want to keep exactly as it left the factory: a new car you'll keep for years, a special colour, or matte film that turns gloss paint satin all over. It's also the only package that covers the doors against parking-lot dings. The full front versus full body comparison covers the cost and the time in the shop, which is three to five days for a full vehicle.

Getting the price for your car

The prices here are where each package starts, in LLumar Platinum with LLumar's 10-year limited warranty. The final number depends on the car's size, how complex its bumper is and whether the paint needs correcting before film goes on. Send the year, make and model through the quote form with the package the builder picked.

Questions about this tool

01Can I get film on just one panel?

Ask the shop. The published prices are for the four packages; single panels, like a rear bumper's loading edge, are quoted for the car.

02Why do the packages stop at the doors?

Because the front of the car takes the stones. The step from Track Package to Full Vehicle is the doors, rear quarters, trunk or tailgate and the whole roof, which mostly matter for scratches and parking-lot dings rather than chips.

03Is partial hood film visible?

There's an edge across the hood and fenders where the film stops, which you can see up close on dark or metallic paint. Full Front takes the film to the panel edges so there's no line across the middle.

04What film is used?

LLumar Platinum, gloss or matte, with a 10-year manufacturer's limited warranty from LLumar. Platinum Extra and Valor are other LLumar lines you can ask about.
