Why doesn’t the season stop a PPF install?
Because the film never meets the weather. Paint protection film is laid inside, so the temperature that matters is the room’s and the car’s, not the street’s.
PPF is a wet install: SunTek, LLumar’s sister brand, describes “a soap and water mixture” used to position the film before it’s squeegeed down. Film makers publish temperature ranges for that work. 3M’s installation guidelines for its own films allow “environmental and vehicle application temperatures” of 16 to 30 °C and name 21 to 26 °C as the optimum. LLumar doesn’t publish a range for Platinum, so 3M’s figures are used here as a reference point, not as LLumar’s rule.
Set those numbers against the climate normals for Abbotsford Airport, the long-record Environment Canada station just east of Langley:
| Month | Average daily high, Abbotsford A | Below 3M’s 16 °C minimum? |
|---|---|---|
| October | 15.0 °C | Yes, just |
| November | 9.3 °C | Yes |
| December | 5.9 °C | Yes |
| January | 6.7 °C | Yes |
| February | 9.0 °C | Yes |
| March | 11.6 °C | Yes |
| April | 14.7 °C | Yes |
| May | 18.1 °C | No |
On an average day, an outdoor install would sit outside 3M’s range for seven months of the year. That’s why winter PPF is a job for an indoor bay.
What does a cold, wet car need before film goes on?
It needs to be clean, dry and at room temperature. A car that arrives from a salted road carries brine, grit and road film, and 3M’s range applies to the vehicle as well as the room.
Salt and grit off the paint
Decontamination comes first on every job. In a Langley winter it has more to remove: the Township of Langley pre-treats its 401 kilometres of first-priority roads with salt brine when snow or ice is forecast, and its trucks can be fitted with salt and sand spreaders or brine tanks. A decontamination wash is what takes that film of road treatment off before anything is laid.
No wax on the way in
If you run the car through a wash before your appointment, skip any wax option. LLumar’s FAQ warns that wax and other coatings applied before its film can weaken how well the film sticks.
Time to warm up
3M’s range names the vehicle’s temperature as well as the room’s, so a car that spent the night outside needs time indoors before the first piece goes on. Dropping the car off rather than waiting with it is the easy way to plan around that.
Does film stick properly once it’s out in the cold?
Yes. LLumar’s PPF FAQ names Colorado, Calgary and Norway among its highest-volume regions for PPF, and says its film, properly looked after, holds up to winter cold.
What the first days need is patience at the wash. Each piece goes on over soapy water and needs time to settle, which is why the makers set a no-wash period: LLumar and 3M each say 72 hours, and Brookswood Tint asks for a full week. In a wet Fraser Valley December, use the shop’s full week. If you notice small spots under new film in those first days, why there are bubbles under new PPF explains what’s normal.
What should you avoid in the first winter weeks?
Washing too soon, and aiming water at the edges. LLumar’s guidance puts no limit on driving after an install; its cautions are all about cleaning.
- No wash for seven days. Rinse the salt off on day eight, not day two.
- No pressure wand along an edge. LLumar warns that pressure washers and automatic washes tend to lift film at its edges, and it won’t cover lifting that starts that way.
- No brush washes, ever. That’s the shop’s rule for film in every season.
- No DIY peeling in the cold. If a piece needs replacing over the winter, LLumar wants it removed inside and warm, and SunTek recommends a steamer to soften film and adhesive in cold weather.
Is winter a sensible time to book PPF?
Yes, if the alternative is driving the gritty months on bare paint. BC’s highways are spread with winter abrasive, and TranBC explains that the size limits on that grit are meant to reduce chips and dings on glass and paint, not to rule them out.
Abbotsford averages about 12 days a year with measurable snowfall and 53 nights at or below freezing, the kind of weather in which crews put down salt, brine and sand. Film fitted in November protects through all of them; film fitted in April protects against next year’s. Whether spring, fall or delivery week makes the most sense for your car is its own question, answered in when is the best time to get PPF in BC. For the full picture of winter grit, see the Fraser Valley winter rock chip guide.
How do you book a winter PPF install?
Pick the package and a day from Monday to Saturday, and plan on leaving the car. A winter booking takes as long as a summer one:
| Winter booking | Starting price | Plan to leave the car |
|---|---|---|
| Partial Front | $850 | A day |
| Full Front | $1,550 | A day or two |
| Track Package | $1,900 | A day or two |
| Full Vehicle | $4,000 | Three to five days |
Every option uses LLumar Platinum with its decade-long LLumar limited warranty, and the final figure grows with the car’s size, its panel shapes and how much work the paint needs first. If tint is also on your winter list, tinting windows in winter covers that side. To hold a bay before the first snow, request a date on the paint protection film form; texts go to 604 534 6433.
