Which films are a gloss metallic red?
One from each maker is a straight match. The gloss row of 3M’s 2080 colour brochure opens with Red Metallic (G203), and Avery Dennison’s North American overview lists Pure Red at the top of its Gloss Metallic column.
| Maker | Film | Code | Where it sits on the chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M | Gloss Red Metallic | 2080-G203 | Gloss row |
| 3M | Gloss Dragon Fire Red | 2080-G363 | Gloss row, next to Red Metallic |
| Avery | Gloss Metallic Pure Red | SW900-401-M | Gloss Metallic |
| Avery | Gloss Metallic Gothic Rose | SW900-402-M | Gloss Metallic, new for spring 2026 |
| Avery | Gloss Passion Red | SW900-448-S | Special Effects, gold flake |
Look at all of them in daylight before deciding, because flake size and the depth of the red are things a screen can’t show.
Solid, gold-flake and matte reds nearby
If you drift away from a straight metallic red, Avery’s SW900 data sheet records real differences between its reds.
- Solid gloss reds. Red, Soft Red, Cardinal Red and Carmine Red all have a 4.2 mil face, among the films Avery says may conform less easily. Gloss Metallic Pure Red isn’t on that list.
- Gold-flake reds. Gloss Passion Red is in Avery’s gold-flake group, rated for 3 years upright in Zone 1 against 5 for an ordinary metallic.
- Matte metallic reds. Avery’s Matte Metallic Cherry and Garnet Red, and its Satin Carmine Red, are on its list of colours that may be less than fully opaque, so old paint lines can show through.
What changes when a red has flake in it?
The installation gets stricter. 3M’s 2080 bulletin says metallic films can look different depending on the direction they’re laid, prints arrows on the liner to guide the installer, and asks that the orientation never alternate from panel to panel.
Lots matter as much as direction. Both makers note that colour can vary slightly between production lots, so a metallic red car is wrapped from a single lot. 3M’s warranty card has a line for the lot or run number; make sure it’s filled in, because a replacement panel next year will need to match it.
How does metallic red look in Fraser Valley light?
In the shop’s view, it changes more with the weather than almost any other colour. On a grey, overcast day the flake has little direct light to catch, so the car reads as a deep, almost solid red; when the sun comes through, the flake lights up along the fenders and the colour brightens noticeably.
That swing is the reason to see swatches outdoors on a dull day as well as a bright one. A red that looks perfect in the sun can turn darker than you expected in November, and a brighter red can feel loud in July.
How do you keep a metallic red wrap glossy?
Wash it gently, use only waxes the maker accepts, and never use anything abrasive. 3M’s maintenance FAQ accepts Perfect-It Show Car Paste Wax and its Synthetic Wax Protectant among the products for smooth or gloss 2080, and notes that post-heating during the install helps the film reach its highest gloss.
- Rinse loose grit off before the mitt touches the film; 3M says scrubbing scratches it.
- Choose cleaners free of abrasives with a pH Avery accepts, between 5 and 9.
- Check wax labels for petroleum distillates, which Avery says void its cover.
A coating isn’t a shortcut to more shine. 3M doesn’t warrant 2080 with a coating applied, and Avery’s warranty is void when a coating contains solvents or distillates, so neither maker backs a coated wrap.
Which cars wear gloss metallic red?
In the shop’s view, cars with big, curved panels, where the flake can roll light across long surfaces. Muscle and sports cars are the obvious fit: the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Charger. Black wheels and a chrome delete keep the red from looking busy.
What do the warranties say for a metallic red?
The makers’ terms are shorter for metallics on Avery’s side and flat across the range on 3M’s, and neither is the shop’s figure. Brookswood Tint’s site gives a 5-year manufacturer warranty on its wrap vinyl.
| Film | Upright panels | Hood and roof |
|---|---|---|
| Avery Gloss Metallic Pure Red, Zone 1 | 5 years | 2 years |
| Avery Gloss Passion Red, Zone 1 | 3 years | 1 year |
| 3M Gloss Red Metallic, Canada | 7 years | 2 years |
Canada falls in Avery’s Zone 1 according to its durability bulletin, while 3M’s card terms are for Zone 2, which is where its zone map places Canada. Ask the shop which term applies before you choose between the films. Real-world life on BC roads is covered in wrap lifespan in BC.
What’s involved in taking a red wrap off?
Heat and a slow peel, and the paint’s age affects how it goes. 3M’s removal bulletin notes that slightly oxidized paint grips film harder than fresh paint, so removal from an older car can take more effort.
The shop prices removal car by car, and wrap removal explains what goes into it.
Getting a metallic red wrap quoted in Langley
See the reds outdoors first, ideally once in sun and once under cloud, and settle on one maker’s film so the whole car comes from a single lot. Then list the codes you’re weighing up, along with the car, on the wrap quote form, or text them to 604 534 6433. Going red all over keeps the car in the bay for three to five days, and a full colour change can include the door jambs.
