Why does the rating change so much between satin blues?
Because Avery rates its films by type, not by colour name, and its satin blues fall into three different types. Avery Dennison’s SW900 data sheet gives a solid colour 10 years on upright panels in Zone 1, a ColorFlow film 4, and a film with gold flake 3.
Satin Wave Blue is on Avery’s list of gold-flake colours, which puts it in that shortest row. Two of Avery’s satin colour-flow films, Frozen Ocean and Moonstone, also shift into blue. So two blues that look similar on a phone screen can carry ratings that differ by years, and that difference should be part of the choice.
Which satin blue films do 3M and Avery make?
The blues below are drawn from the satin rows of both makers’ charts, 3M’s 2080 brochure and Avery’s overview for North America, with the Avery durability row each one falls under.
| Film | Code | Type | Avery Zone 1, upright / flat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M Satin Perfect Blue | 2080-S347 | 3M satin colour | 3M rates all 2080 alike |
| Avery Satin Dark Blue | SW900-682-O | Solid | 10 / 2 years |
| Avery Satin Light Blue | SW900-633-O | Solid | 10 / 2 years |
| Avery Satin Wave Blue | SW900-629-S | Special effect, gold flake | 3 / 1 years |
| Avery Satin Frozen Ocean (cyan to blue) | SW900-788-S | ColorFlow | 4 / 1 years |
| Avery Satin Moonstone (silver to blue) | SW900-634-S | ColorFlow | 4 / 1 years |
3M’s satin row also holds Ocean Shimmer (2080-S327) and Key West (2080-S57). Their names don’t say how blue they read, so ask to see them alongside Perfect Blue.
How does satin blue look on an overcast day?
It depends on the depth of the blue, in the shop’s view. Under a flat, overcast sky, a dark satin blue loses some of its colour and can read close to navy or charcoal, while a lighter satin blue holds its colour and looks soft and chalky in a way gloss doesn’t.
Colour-flow blues behave differently again. They need light hitting the panel at changing angles to shift, so on a dull day the movement is subtle, and the first bright afternoon shows the full effect. The BMW in this page’s main photo is a stock image of a colour-shift finish at dusk, not a car from the shop, but it shows how one film can read blue on the doors and green-gold on the bumper.
How do you look after a satin blue wrap?
Hand wash it gently, aim the hose with care, and keep it out of the sun when you can. Avery’s North American care leaflet warns that spraying at the wrong angle can create failure points that lift the wrap at its edges.
- Let the wrap sit 48 hours after install for Avery film, 72 hours for 3M.
- Pre-rinse, then wash with a soft cloth or sponge and a mild soap, top down.
- Rinse well and dry with a squeegee and microfibre to avoid spots.
- Park in a garage or shade, or under a cover, as often as possible; 3M’s product care guide says this protects the film from heat and UV.
Coating the wrap isn’t the answer to easier cleaning. 3M won’t warrant 2080 under a coating, and Avery’s cover ends if a protective coating contains solvents or petroleum distillates; coating a vinyl wrap explains what you’d give up.
Which cars suit a satin blue wrap?
In the shop’s view, sporty cars with strong shoulder lines, where satin’s soft highlight keeps the shape visible. The BMW M4, Subaru WRX, Honda Civic and Ford Mustang all wear a satin blue well. Dark blues suit black wheels; lighter blues look sharper with silver or bronze ones.
If the shifting look is the attraction, the colour-shift wrap page covers those films as a group, and colour-shift purple covers the purple end of the range.
What do the makers’ warranties and the shop’s term say?
They differ, so get the term for your exact film in writing. Brookswood Tint’s own wrap term is five years, presented as a manufacturer warranty, while 3M’s warranty card gives every 2080 colour seven years upright and two years flat in its Zone 2, the zone 3M’s map gives Canada.
Avery’s durability bulletin places Canada in its Zone 1, where its chart gives the solid satin blues 10 years upright, ColorFlow 4 and gold flake 3, and Avery’s data sheet sets its warranty term equal to that durability. 3M’s card also covers only the original purchaser and can’t be transferred. Ask the shop which of these you’ll receive.
What does removing a satin blue wrap involve?
Heat, patience and a residue clean-up, at a pace neither maker promises. 3M’s 2080 bulletin says removal takes heat and/or chemicals and makes no claim about speed, and Avery’s data sheet excludes ease or speed of removal from its warranty.
That’s why going back to the original paint is quoted car by car. The steps, and what makes them slower, are in removing a car wrap.
