Does a satin white wrap hide the old paint colour?
On the outside of the panels, yes; in the gaps, only if you pay for them. Avery Dennison’s SW900 data sheet names the colours it doesn’t consider fully opaque, mostly yellows, oranges and a few reds, and none of its whites is on that list.
The catch is everywhere the film stops. Open a door on a dark car wrapped in white and the jambs, sills and inner edges are still the old colour. Jambs can be added to a full colour change at the shop, and whether to wrap door jambs explains what that adds. Going from black or dark blue to white is the case where it matters most.
Which satin whites do 3M and Avery make?
Each maker has one solid satin white and at least one pearl white, listed in the satin rows of 3M’s 2080 colour brochure and Avery’s North American overview.
| Maker | Film | Code | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M | Satin White | 2080-S10 | Solid |
| 3M | Satin Pearl White | 2080-SP10 | Pearl |
| Avery | Satin White | SW900-116-O | Solid |
| Avery | Satin White Pearl | SW900-117-S | Pearl |
| Avery | Satin Pearl White Snow | SW900-118-S | Pearl |
Pearl changes the install, not just the look. Avery’s data sheet gives its satin white pearl a 4.2 mil face, thick enough to land on its list of films that may not conform as easily around deep curves, and asks for pearl films to run in one direction across the car. If you want white with depth and shimmer, the gloss version has its own page: gloss white pearl.
What does satin white look like under Langley’s grey skies?
In the shop’s view, satin white is one of the few colours that looks better on an overcast day than in hard sun. Without strong light to reflect, the low sheen gives it a soft, porcelain look, and body lines show as gentle shading rather than bright highlights.
The weather works against it lower down. In Environment Canada’s 1981–2010 normals, Abbotsford’s November rainfall of about 241 mm is more than five times July’s 43 mm, and through those wet months a white car’s rockers, lower doors and rear bumper collect road spray fast. Plan on the bottom third of the car needing attention between full washes.
How do you keep a satin white wrap clean?
Little and often, and with the right chemistry. Avery’s North American care leaflet asks owners to spot-clean bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap as soon as possible: soak the mark with Avery’s Power Cleaner, let it sit a few seconds, wipe it off, then follow with Avery’s sealant.
3M’s own guidance hints at how stubborn marks on white can be. In its maintenance FAQ, Matte White (2080-M10) and Carbon Fiber White get a cleaning ladder of their own, from hot soapy water, isopropyl alcohol and an all-purpose cleaner up to bleach spray and mineral spirits, the last two followed by an alcohol wipe. Satin white isn’t on that list, but it’s a sign that white film can need more than a rinse.
- Use a mild car soap between pH 5 and 9, as Avery asks.
- Skip automatic brush washes, which both makers warn against.
- If you wax at all, use a product free of petroleum distillates, and only on Avery film; 3M’s approved waxes are listed for its smooth and gloss films, not satin.
A coating on top would cost you the film warranty: 3M leaves coated 2080 out of its cover, and Avery’s lapses if the product carries solvents or distillates. The trade-off is laid out on coating a vinyl wrap.
Which cars look right in satin white?
In the shop’s view, cars with clean, uncluttered surfaces, where a soft white makes the shape look carved. EVs such as the Tesla Model 3 and Rivian R1S suit it, and so does a Porsche 911, where black wheels and trim give the white an edge. A chrome delete is the usual way to get that contrast.
What ratings do satin white films carry?
Solid white sits in Avery’s longest-rated row, while its pearls drop to the shorter metallic row. The shop publishes a 5-year term for wrap vinyl and describes it as the manufacturer’s warranty; the makers’ own figures are below.
| Film | Upright panels | Hood and roof |
|---|---|---|
| Avery Satin White (solid), Zone 1 | 12 years | 3 years |
| Avery satin pearl whites, Zone 1 | 5 years | 2 years |
| 3M 2080, Canada | 7 years | 2 years |
Avery’s durability bulletin lists Canada in its Zone 1. 3M’s warranty card gives the Zone 2 figures, and 3M’s zone map colours Canada as Zone 2. The card covers the original purchaser only. Before you choose, get the shop’s answer on paper about which of these terms your film carries.
What’s involved in taking a white wrap off?
Warming the film, peeling it panel by panel, and cleaning off residue. Avery rates SW900 removable for as long as its durability period lasts, defining a clean removal as under 20% adhesive left behind, and 3M suggests a citrus-based cleaner for any 2080 residue.
If the jambs were wrapped as well, they come off too, which adds to the job. What sets the price is covered on wrap removal.
Booking a satin white wrap
Tell the shop the car’s current colour, because that decides whether door jambs are worth adding. The wrap quote form takes the car’s details, the white you like and the jamb question in one go. Expect the car to stay three to five days for a full change, and longer with jambs.
