PPF for gravel and trail use

Off-Road PPF & Rock Rash Protection

At a glance

Off-road PPF handles two of the three things trails do to paint: stone spray off gravel and the light scratches brush drags along the sides. It won't stop a rock strike from denting metal. For a truck or SUV that leaves the pavement, Brookswood Tint starts with the Track Package in LLumar Platinum, which adds rocker panels and A-pillars to a full front from $1,900; Full Vehicle, from $4,000, brings in the doors, rear quarters and tailgate.

What does off-road driving do to a vehicle’s paint?

Three different things: gravel thrown up by your own tires and by passing traffic, scratches from brush that crowds the trail, and hard contact with rock. Film is built for the first two and only softens the third.

The province is blunt about the roads most off-road trips start on. Resource roads, its overview page explains, “are not part of the provincial highway system” and are “frequently used by industrial vehicles”. Its road safety page adds that “most resource roads have rough, loose gravel surfaces and are narrow (often one lane wide)”, and its list of common hazards includes large industrial vehicles, passing or being passed on narrow roads, poor visibility due to brush, and rocks and boulders.

What happens Where it lands What film does
Gravel spray from your tires and oncoming trucks Front bumper, hood edge, mirrors, rocker panels, the lower body behind each wheel Takes the stone hits on covered panels
Brush along a narrow trail Mirrors, fenders, doors, rear quarters, box sides Takes light scratches; its top coat heals surface marks with heat
Rock contact while crawling or on a washout Sills, lower doors, bumper corners Resists light scuffs; a hard strike can still cut the film and dent the panel

Can PPF stop rock rash?

It stops the scuffing kind and not the denting kind. A clear urethane layer on the paint takes scrapes, stone chips and the grit that sandblasts the lower body, but no film stops a strike hard enough to fold metal.

Film is a skin for the paint, not armour. If a rock does cut the film, the heat-healing top coat won’t close it, and the repair is to replace that section from the same template, as can damaged PPF be patched explains. Light scratches are a different matter: LLumar says its Platinum film heals surface scratches “with heat from your engine or the sun”.

Which PPF coverage suits an off-road truck or SUV?

Pick the package that matches how far off the pavement you go. Gravel roads call for the sills; tight, brushy trails call for the sides of the vehicle as well.

How the vehicle is used Package to start from From
Paved most days, some gravel to a trailhead or cabin Full Front $1,550
Regular gravel and forest service roads Track Package: Full Front plus the sills, windshield pillars and the roof’s front edge $1,900
Narrow trails with brush on both sides Full Vehicle: every painted panel, including doors, rear quarters, box sides and tailgate $4,000
A rig you plan to keep for years Full Vehicle $4,000

Those are starting prices; a full-size pickup or a large SUV carries more panel, so its quote is worked out from the vehicle. The truck PPF page covers pickups panel by panel, and rocker panel PPF explains why a chip low on the sill deserves attention. Model pages for common trail vehicles include PPF for the Ford Bronco and PPF for the Jeep Wrangler.

Is LLumar Platinum Extra worth asking for?

For a vehicle that lives on gravel, it’s worth raising when you ask for a quote. Every package price is for LLumar Platinum; Extra is LLumar’s thicker film and isn’t on the published menu.

On its Platinum Extra page, LLumar says the film is “thicker than traditional PPF”. It aims it at drivers who “want to go from tough terrain to the suburbs without worrying about your paint showing its wear”, and its list of places to target, “rocker panels, fenders, hoods, bumpers, and doors”, lines up with where trail damage lands. Its HydroGard surface is described as resisting “dirt, oil, tar, and bugs”, and it carries a 10-year limited warranty. LLumar gives no thickness figure, so the shop can’t promise a measured difference; how the films compare is set out on LLumar Platinum PPF.

What are Fraser Valley forest service roads like?

Rough enough that the province posts warnings road by road. The Chilliwack Natural Resource District’s road safety page, last updated September 22, 2026, lists current notices for forest service roads in the district.

  • Mount Cheam FSR: “several deep cross-ditches along the FSR. High clearance vehicle is highly recommended.”
  • Tamihi FSR: a “Rockfall Hazard – No Stopping” sign at about 3.0 km, due to an unstable cutslope.
  • Harrison East FSR: rockfall warning signs at about 13.0 km.
  • Francis Lake FSR: narrow at about 1.3 km because of a rock boulder.

The province also notes that Forest Service Road Use Regulations, “including speed restrictions and insurance requirements”, are in effect and enforced, and advises drivers to “drive to the condition of the road”. Film makes the paint more resilient on roads like these; it doesn’t make a vehicle suited to them, so check the notices before you go.

Lifted trucks, aftermarket bumpers and flares: what should the shop know?

Everything that has changed since the truck left the factory. Templates are drawn for the factory body, and LLumar’s warranty follows factory paint.

LLumar’s PPF FAQ says the film is made for original factory paint, and that problems on aftermarket or repaired paint fall outside its warranty. Carbon fibre, it adds, doesn’t count as OEM paint either. So list any steel bumper, refinished panel, carbon or plastic flare and repainted sill when you ask for a price; the shop can then tell you what film suits and which pieces would sit outside the warranty.

How do you wash trail mud off filmed panels?

Let new film sit a week before the first wash, then rinse mud off by hand or in a touchless bay, keeping the pressure nozzle well back from every film edge. Brush washes are out.

The rocker film’s long lower edge sits right where mud builds up, so it’s the edge to treat most gently. LLumar’s guidance is to keep pressure washers and automatic washes off film, since both can lift it, edges first, and lifting from those falls outside its limited warranty. Soften dried mud with plenty of low-pressure water before you wipe, so the grit floats off instead of being dragged across the film. The full routine is on washing a car that has PPF.

Booking off-road PPF in Langley

List the year, make, model and trim, every modification, and attach a few photos of the lower body on the quote request for PPF, or text the photos to 604 534 6433. Say how you use the vehicle so the quote matches the coverage.

A Full Front or Track Package keeps the vehicle a day or two; Full Vehicle needs three to five. The paint is decontaminated first, its thickness is measured, and any marks that need polishing are corrected before film goes on. Bring the vehicle to 20560 Langley Bypass, Unit 312, any day except Sunday; the bay is staffed from 9:00 until 17:00.

Questions about off-road PPF

01Does PPF stick to textured plastic flares and bumper trim?

LLumar designs its film for original painted surfaces, so raw textured plastic isn't what it's made for. Tell the shop what's painted and what's bare on your truck, and ask what can sensibly be covered.

02Can door film be added later if trail scratches start showing?

Yes. Extra panels are priced for your vehicle once the shop has seen it. Scratches already in the paint would be sealed under new film, so polishing them out comes first.

03Is a rock that cuts the film a warranty claim?

Usually not. The defects in the shop's published terms are yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling, which describe the film failing with age. A cut from a rock is impact damage, so have the shop look at the piece and quote its replacement.

04Can film go on an aftermarket steel bumper?

Ask first. LLumar says problems with aftermarket or repaired paint aren't covered by its warranty, and a powder-coated or refinished bumper isn't the factory paint the film is designed for.
